Dun Ghallain – Loch Sunart
Alternative Name(s):
Travel directions: Take the Corran Ferry to Ardgour and turn left on to the A861 following signs for Strontian. Stay on this road, through Strontian and then, approx 10 miles later, turn left through Salen on to the B8007. Rhibs can be launched approx 2 /3 hours either side of Low Water at Salen Boat slip for a fee, or carry on for another 10 miles or so, past Glenborrodale and between Glenbeg and Ardslignish, where there is a bay adjacent to the road which is accessible for a boat towed by a 4 wheel drive. There is a small wooden jetty in the bay and a large house overlooking the bay.
NOTE: There is a large slip at Laga but we do not know if this has public access. If it does, the site is just 500 yards to the East of the slip.
From Salen, the site is about 5 miles West. From the bay, it is about 4 miles East.
Parking directions: Parking is chargeable at the Slip. Room for 2 or 3 cars on the grass at the Bay. 4 wheel drives and trailers may be parked above high tide mark on beach. (Beware if Spring Tides.)

The Jetty in the Bay

Small Fishing Boat Moored in the Launch Bay

Access to the Launch Site in the Bay.

Site entry/exit: Boat Access
Underwater directions: Dropping in just South of the rock there is a gentle boulder and sand slope with lots of life and interest down to about 10 metres, then a small wall with lots of Featherstars to a sandy slope at 16 metres. This slope continues down further but we did not explore beyond this on this dive.
Site Hazards: There are rocks just below the water surface at most states of the tide so be very careful with the boat.
Suggested experience: Suitable for OW and as a Training Site but interesting enough for experienced divers. Exploration potential beyond the sandy slope at 16M?
