View Full Version : Loch Creran
Dived Loch Creran last Sunday and you could hardly move in the water for them [jellies], there must have been thousands! All seemed to be at about the same depth though, managed to get down below them at about 25 meters. Unfortunately that was about all there was to see, not most exciting topography!
/Colin. :D Did you visit the reef there? Not very deep but lots of life on it. The Serpula worm colonies are outstanding. I saw a couple of rays the last time I dived there... v nice :)

No. Unfortunately not, I think we were in the wrong place. We must have been in the seventh or eighth lay-by after the bridge, a bit too far down me thinks. The bottom was predominantly uneventful silt /mud covered in dead muscle shells. Vis was good though at about 8 meters. As the "scenery" was so poor, we packed up and did the second dive at St Catherines. A lot more life but vis was not as good, although we did have the site to ourselves.

Colin, you can see details of the site that we dive in Loch Creran here (http://staff.stir.ac.uk/charles.mcgurk/diving/site_guides/steps.htm).
(This guide has been sent to Gord so should be on the CA database shortly.)
i dived there earlier this year, looking at your UW map charlie i would say there is another reef, perhaps even another two.
the bearing i took was from the shore & the white house you can see in the pic below.
from what i could get my head around, it appeared the reef/s i dived interlocked & crossed over each other.
the mind boggles.

Very useful info, thanks stewart. :)
My dives there were limited in depth as I was instructing so I didn't get a chance to do a good recce. Will have to go back to try to put together a better underwater map. Hopefully the current map will at least serve as a useful starting point for divers going there for the first time. If you or anyone else would like to improve upon it in the meantime please feel free.

Very good pictures can be taking with low Mpixel cameras.
I tool a picture of the Luanda skyline with a cheap camera from Tescos, and the picture was stunning compared to friends with expensive 6 and 7 M pixel cameras.
I'll have a look for it and post it.

Our first dive was too far down the loch. Just silt /mud. Had a look at this site as we passed heading home but dismissed it due to the flat contour of the land above the water, assumed it would be the same underwater, but what do I know!!!
The only reason we ended up here was because Dunollie Point was blown out with three foot waves crashing against the rocks. I would like to get back up and give this site a try now that I know where to dive and to see the Serpula worm colonies Charlie mentioned.
Thanks for the dive site description Charlie!
/Colin. :D
If you head up towards the top of the Loch, whilst the bottom is very flat and sily, there is quite a population of langoustines (Dublin Bay Prawns) or there certainly used to be ;) , They often live in their burrows in the mud or just hang out of one end of their burrows.
Take care though, as it can get a bit silty down there when it comes to scampi wrestling
Cheers

good info, Snash :)
also a fair number of scallops (mostly queenies though)
