View Full Version : East Coast West Coast (& middle)

Hello,

This is an idea that has cropped up in Dive Monkeys introduction so rather than steal Jeana's thunder thought I'd bring the idea to the rest of the bar.

This is what I wrote earlier (saves me typing it again).

"There seems to be a little bit of an East Coast West Coast thing on here now. Beyond Tomy2Tums who is in the middle somwhere in terms of location I know most the East Coasters... and have seen the West Coasters in the water when they infiltrated the May Isle Waters a couple of weeks ago. But so far I don't think Gog's, Smudge or even Prop Guard have have met the weegie... oops I meant west coast... divers.

Any plans for an almighty Conger Alley Diving Exped? "

Obviously I missed out that Tomy2Tums is not the only one in the middle but the idea of hosting a massive dive day would still be good.

Any takers...

Loudy, Airmonster and Charlie are all pretty close to me too.

I think a Conger Alley meet up would be nice.

What location, it would need to be big enough for a few divers and cars.

July some time? It would be nice to meet more of you before I (hopefully) depart these shores, (again hopefully) very soon!

What about Fife Ness?

don't forget stewart too!

Yeah there are a few of us middle-of-the-road guys about although I must admit to coming from the west. Not only was I born in Glasgow but I grew up in Eastwood... :o

Maybe we should meet in the middle... Powmill! ;)

Seriously, as T2T stated there would need to be good parking etc. We previously had a meeting at Conger Alley but maybe should think a little out of the box this time. Would be nice to go to an east coast site to establish some balance.

I'd love to go to Weasel Loch on a summer's day but it's probably not that practical for a big group to all get access to the shore. When is the bridge at Dunbar harbour due to be replaced?

I fancy a bit of Fife action though. Been meaning to go that way for a while. Could be really great to be guided by some of the local experts.

What do other people think?

I'll definitely put my name down for that, was nice meeting some of the Congers at the Shark dive which Charlie organised. Anywhere is good for me though if it's a long haul perhaps arranging some car pooling might be a plan.

Ok, this is looking like it could be a goer! In terms of location Fife Ness is a good site, especially if you want to have a barbeque. It's not a challenging dive (max 11m or something) and there's wreckage as well as the usual sealife. However the parking is rubbish and unless you get good weather the dives can easily be blown out.

Personally, if I was planning something like this that required a fair amount of advance notice to get everyone organised, I would go for Loch Fyne of Loch Long. Parking can be an issue but the weather usually isn't. BUT... if an East Coast Dive is preferrable then perhaps the Chingford or Elie bay. Neither of them are difficult dives (have been said to be boring!) but there is plenty parking and there is a very handy pub called the Ship Inn which has apparently just won an award for finest Ale in the UK. However, Gogs is you man for these dives as he knows them better than me. In terms of a date... July works for me!

How? You have dived them before.... remember when we dived Elie at Low water?? :D :D :D

Climbing through the swim through in the harbour wall in full dive kit!!

Anyway, back to the topic.... somewhere there is good parking, a good pub and a decent dive... suggestions please.

Yeah... that was a quality dive! But you've dived the Chingford and I haven't.
I think we can discount any boat dives to the May unless someone can come up with a fleet of RIB's.

I agree that the east coast would be nice but the weather conditions could dictate otherwise.

Another option could be the Slates (http://www.congeralley.com/sites/slates.htm) at Ballachulish. Varied diving: shallow in the bay or down to 50m+ on the slate slope. Usually very good viz: 15m+. Should be plenty of life there at that time of year.

There is parking for 6-10 cars. When we were there, one of the locals offered to unlock the access gate to the headland which would probably allow another 20+ vehicles to park! Would probably have to take a trip up there in advance to check that such an invasion would be OK with the locals.

Otherwise there are the usual suspects: Conger (http://www.congeralley.com/sites/conger.htm), Furnace Tea Rooms (http://www.congeralley.com/sites/tearooms.htm). If we could arrange vehicular access to Furnace Quarry (http://www.congeralley.com/sites/furnace.htm) that could be good. Portencross (http://www.congeralley.com/sites/Portencross.htm) offers lots of parking but is a pretty shallow dive (<10m). Carrick Castle (http://www.congeralley.com/sites/carick.htm) Loch Goil also offers lots of parking (+ a public loo!) but the diving is quite tame.

Deep Seeker
15-05-07, 14:38
I've not dived Furnace so that would probably be a good option in my opinion. Bloody long way though eh? As for vehicles, you would probably find Smudge and Dive Monkey would be in one car and me, Gogs and Prop Guard in another.

I supposed it's down to whether we are going for the diving or the pub banter. I'm happy to do either as it would be good to have a bit of a carry on, maybe even with random dive buddies. So it might be better if it's done somewhere that's not exactly challenging. I'm sure we can all do the hardcore stuff but I'd be happy to get stuck with a weegie... I mean a fine diver from the West if we were just having a light hearted dive.:p

Hi, count me in!

In terms of dive site, I would suggest something on the west coast. Fife would be nice and easy for me, but as mentioned earlier, can easily blown out. And if we get a fair amount of divers, that would be a great pity.. although.. we could focus on the pub:rolleyes:

I can vouch for Elie having fab food not too sure about the ale though. Having had the pleasure of diving lots at Elie last year & a few times already this year (thanks to a very enthusastic Frank Mc) it is site with lots of parking and erm kelp! But a good wee dive all the same.

Am pretty sure we could squueze Lars in somewhere, although my car is limited to 2 full kits, poor John M & Smudge had to change a wheel as we arrived into Oban....not great considering the spare was under *all* the dive kit!

I did my qualifiying OD dive at the Chingford - think I completely missed the bits of wreck - navigation not being my strong point then - so although not my fav site in the world, would go back.

Can't do t in the p weekend, the week of the open in july (round about the 20th I think) and def not the 1st week in aug as its the ladies open ( I work in a golf shop) but pretty much any other time as long as I get plenty warning to arrange time off at work.

good idea from charlie, the slates!!
my first thought was furnace quarry, but getting close to the pier isnt a garuntee.
still do-able (is that a word?) though as you can still walk in but it can be an effort with twins/stage etc.
the good thing about the deeper sites is the option for everyone to pick their depth to suit their quallification.

i think the slates would be my choice, never dived it before but garunteed good viz.
if your doing a reccy charlie, give me a shout, i may take a meander up there with you.

i fear ding's position as top-poster may be in jeopardy very soon ;)

The English contingent (well me) of the west of this county am up for this, obviously dependent on my actually being in the UK as im once again taking up ex pat tax free status from the 10th June. Dont mind which site so long as not A-frames or Tea rooms. Weasel Loch is plenty of parking.

Now how am i going to fill 6 glorious weeks off on full pay..................

1. Don't worry, dive kit grows faster than weeds, soon you will have LOTS of kit :p

Of course no-one has yet mentioned that Fifeness is an *excellent* place for a night dive if the tides are right, some kind soul has left a lighthouse there so that even I can find my way back by following the big bright light moth style ;)

Great idea. I'm delighted that there is a strong East coast presence on the forum now. Count me in, dates permitting. I'm happy to try anywhere that fits the bill. What about shore diving at St Abbs?. Plenty parking if you're there early enough. Several shore dives you can do........ Must be a pub somewhere there and not too far from Glasgow (just over 90 mins for me and I'm close to the Little Chef at Milton).

I would be up for a Conger Alley mass dive.

I would suggest L.Long or L.Fyne or Pennan (well worth it if never dived there before). There is an annual get together at Pennan where divers come every year (Salstice meet - June 23rd) from all over and camp overnight and drink, BBQ etc. toilets are supplied on-site and air fills are supplied courtesy of Aberdeen Watersports or we may be taking our portable compressor this year.

Kind Regards

I was discussing this with LArs in the pub and we kind of think the Slates would be a good suggestion. I like the idea of a St Abbs shore dive but most of us East Coasters know the Fife Coast much better so our ability to show folk around would be pretty rubbish at St Abbs.

We could just wing it however!

What about a shore dive at Eyemouth? Loads of parking, air fills from Aquastars, A Chippy and Pubs. Oh and the shore dive into Green Ends or Ness End Reef the into Dead End Gulley is great. Viz is good at 10m+ and plenty of Wildlife. I dive the on a regular basis and still finding new gulleys and reefs to explore. This is also probably the best scenic dive in the UK with the bonus of there now being a local pod of dolphins hanging about at the end of the reef some days. Great place for Lobbies as well and it's outside the Marine Reserve Area.

Where do you dive in Elie ? Going up to Crail this weekend to go to Fife Ness around 5.30pm.

-dive-monkey-
16-05-07, 09:40
As you drive to the harbour in Elie there's a gravel car park on the left hand side, we park up there and walk down the slipway and either gostraight out (nothing but sand past the kelp) or take a right and follow the rocks. You can also drive past the car park and park beside the wall at the flats. A short walk over the rocks and you can go dive up the harbour wall or go out past the rocks.

Lars
16-05-07, 10:27
Eyemouth or St Abbs would be great, BUT the Forth Bridge would be PITA for us from Fife.... Hey, Nick, we could use KRAKEN to get there ;)
So, I still think west coast would be better. Also more independent from weather.

Deep Seeker
16-05-07, 11:58
I'm with you on the West Coast Lars. I think fitting a lot of folk around a good weather weekend would be difficult. We could be lucky and get great diving but then we could also be blown out. I think the West might at least be consistent and we could always make a weekend of it and stay over Oban way and go out for a SoM dive with Puffin on the Sunday (or the other way around depending on when this gets arranged).

right, I am an in the middle diver too, West Lothian. Think there are more in the middle than you give credit for.
I am up for a dive trip, but need notice and time to recover from my present state.
St. Abbs, Eyemouth sound ok,
Dunbar bridge should be up soon, but not much variety,
Oban - is there enough shore diving there to interest such a large group?
Long and Fyne - I suspect parking would be a problem,
Fife - the bridge!!!
Open to any ideas though.

Eyemouth Eyemouth Eyemouth and go over the Kincardine Bridge or get up early and go over the Forth Road Bridge. It is the best place for a large number of divers to meet up. It's a great site with loads to see, there are Seals, Lobsters, Starfish, Brittlestars, Fish of a sorts and size and WOLF FISH and ANGLER FISH some dead end gulleys full of soft corals best shore dive in the UK and it's easy entry and exit even a great bit to kit up at. Could even do a shore and a boat dive, the Hurkers is a great dive as well. Check out my video's on You Tube. Do a search for Eyemouth or Powmill and click on more from this user.

COME ON YOU KNOW IT MAKES SENSE ;) ;) ;)

shog69
17-05-07, 22:33
Should probably write a Dive Guide on Eyemouth but this will do just now.

There are 3 shore dives at the 1 site in Eyemouth, these are Green Ends Gulley, Ness End Reef and Ness End Bay.

Green Ends Gulley is best done at high tide so you don't have to scramble across any rocks but can swim over them instead. Anyway once over the rocks, you drop down into a kelp forrest with max depth of around 6m, as you progress through the kelp you come to some large boulders, over them and drop down to around 12m, from here you now have sheer reef faces on both sides which have loads of cracks with lobsters and other sealife in them, depth gets to a maximum of 17-18m as you head round the right hand end of the reef. Next time i'm down there I'll make a film of the dive as it's great, with loads to see.

Ness End Reef - Can be done at high or low tide, i prefer to do it as the tide is coming in to make getting ot easy. Anyway big step entry of the concrete slipway and straight into around 8m, directly behind you is a small cave which has Lobsters in it most of the time there are other such small caves down the left hand side until you come to the Broken Telly. Past this and through a space between to large boulders dropping down into the 1st main bowl of the reef at around 15m here there walls are covered in soft corals with sea slugs, wrasse, crabs, lobsters, sea urchins everywhere, follow with the reef on your left hand side and you come to a large boulder about the size of a big car covered in kelp, we normally swim up the righthand side and this takes you into another sheltered gulley which goes on for a fair bit, but still not been to the end of it. Again i really need to film this to show how good it is.

Ness End Bay - Best done at high tide. Drop in at the same point as for Ness End Reef bt head off to the right swimming over the kelp (Hence High Tide) When you get to the clearing in the kelp, you drop down to 10m from here you can head left right or straight ahead. Only done straight ahead so far. Following the reef out to around 18m and around the corner. Here everything is covered with Brittle Stars, Millions of them, follow with the reef to your left hand shoulder and check out the large ledge before the reef changes direction as there is normally an angler fish here. Heading back out towards the sea until it turns inshore again and round the corner to another gulley. In here there ar normally two Wolf Fish hiding in the large crack in the reef wall. You can keep going round and it will take you back into Green End Gulley. We normally turn back and head down the opposite side of the reef which branches off into Dead End Gulley (See the Video on You Tube)

These are dives that you need to experiance to understand why we go back so often.:) :)

We have a great story in Eastwood about a Hilux :D Something to do with it being on the beach for the Solstice. After a long night of bbq and beers, it was time to go back to the camp site. The tide was well in and not much room to turn round! The driver who shall be nameless, did some kind of turning manouever and reversed into Loch Fyne :D we never let him live it down. By the way it was his boss's car:D

You forgot the best bit Sandie - it never worked again! I always loved the photo someone created that had the club 'diving' the hilux.

I don't know how to reply to a few post at a time??

Neither did I dive-granny - maybe I'm not such the forum junkie as deep seeker suggests:confused:

To multi quote click the button to the right of the Quote button with "+ on it, it will turn red then click the reply button and hey presto multi-quote away.

Ok, back to the topic!
We are still lacking a dive site....
And before we even start to think about a date, we should at least know on which side of Scotland we want to meet. I still think we should head to the west coast. Because of the huge amount of divesites and we will find a diveable (???) place independent of the weather. Should we set up a poll??

Eastwood are having the Summer Solstice on w/e 23/24th June. We reckon Oban as it has a decent campsite and decent diving. As the camp site has non divers too we would not need to get Too noisy or we might end up not being able to camp there either. So many '?camp?' sites seem to have banned tents:( Other places don't always have enough room for lots of divers and cars. We will hopefully be taking our RHIB too.

Sorry,..... I didn't get a PM either
I just said it to belong to the big boys.....:(

SO where and when?????
Dive Tramp is on his way to the west to look for good places (although he knows them all anyway). We have to expel Eyemouth out of shog69 and I decide that the meeting will be on the west coast. Done! :p
The best site will be one with a camping ground very close by.

Now the worst thing. WHEN???? I still think better sooner than later!

Lars

Now you can slag me off.... :o

Lars

I really would like to dive Eyemouth. But as mentioned earlier for a bunch of people the west coast would be better! Mid-June would also be fine for me.
