View Full Version : Lidl
Remember that Lidl started selling their diving specials (http://www.lidl.co.uk/uk/home.nsf/pages/c.o.20070510.index.ar11) today.
I ended up buying a few bits of kit:
mask: design similar to Cressi Big Eyes style: i.e. lots of viz looking downwards + side panel allowing some side vision
shorty wet suit: cheap 'n' cheerful
torch: same as last year's: LED effort 4AA - good as back-up to check gauges etc. but beam isn't focused
SMB/strobe/whistle (seems very cheap for what you get):
- base level dSMB but with better sized inflation baffle than some cheap ones. Also has lead tape around baffle to keep it erect (!) on the surface. Comes with 6m (I think) of line and a counter weight.
- LED strobe light stick - looks the same as Aquatec model http://www.aquatec.co.uk/pages/accessories/aquanova.php
- standard fin-shaped diving whistle
stainless steel karabiners: standard design
The OW fins looked quite good too.
If you want stuff you'd better be quick as the shop was full of divers this morning!

Hope they leave some for me, I'll pop in on my way home from work.
Edit: Well I popped in and got myself the SMB/strobe/whistle, fins, mask, snorkel and a grab bag. Didn't bother with the torch this time as I've got two kicking about (one is dead and the other is intermittent). Didn't see any carabiners which is a shame, I could do with a few. Wet suits were down to Small and X-Small ladies only. Not a bad bounty and the prices were cheerful.

I got a shorty wet suit, a mask and a boat rope which I thought might come in handy!
not at my local lidl :(
Did they not have any diving kit at all, chris?
I had a look on their "specials" board last night but it was still the garden stuff, their website also didnt show any dive stuff for my postcode, maybe next week, they might just rotate them round the stores or it sold crap the last time so they havent bothered?
I wondered why they asked for the home post code on the web site.
Some people are shameless: buy it from Lidl for under a tenner & try to flog it on FleaBay for £15!

Hmm, good plan. I sent my mother into lidl yesterday to buy a safety kit and a set of karibeeners. GG then decided to go to Lidl and bought 2 sets of karibeeners and a safety set, and a ton of other stuff that he hasn't admitted yet.
To be honest, I'm thinking of keeping the strobe LED but selling the rest of the SMB set. How many SMBs & whistles does one diver really need?
The karabiners are quite nice: I've got a couple attached to various bits of gear now, replacing some old rusty clips. I thought about buying a goodie bag but they seemed to have a big plastic frame which would prevent stowage in a pocket. I'm quite pleased with my shortie: should act as a corset as well as keeping the chill away in our pool!

Ah, that's how you spell it. I couldn't remember and couldn't be bothered looking it up!
not at my local lidl :(
Which lidl did you go to chris? i was in the livingston one today, got a torch and a net, they had loads left.
bathgate, might go down tomorrow and have a look

big hammer... bang it on the plastic frame, disgard the frame when smashed via the net, you now have a £4 goody bag- job done!
most of the gear they are selling is bottom of the market, the karabiners & wet suits are not a bad buy.

I bought a rope which I thought might be useful for a throw rope or for pulling back on to the rhib. Ian however said he would use it to keel haul me instead :( Poor DG.

Well I splashed out on a mask, karibeners, the first aid kit (how much was in that??) a goody bag and the strobe set. A bargain I say!

Just been in at liunchtime.
Carron Village branch still has some wetsuits and shorties, but only small and X small, masks, snorkels, fins, torches, Karabiners and goodie bags.
Callander Park Branch has SMB sets, snorkelling set and one medium size shortie..... I needed the large .........sob, sob, sob
On the other hand, I swapped it for a yacht.
GG:o

Yeah, for me. And don't you forget it.
Beware of the Fins. One of our members bought a pair. Jumped into the sea from the hard boat and came up with half a fin. They split in half.

Is that what's meant by a split fin?
I recently purchased the Lidl safety pack. The DSMB is fine and seems pretty robust- I tried it in the water today and it was fine, so I will use it as a back up. I gave the line away to my kit collecting colleague and stuck the strobe on the back of my tank for a dive at Glen Douglas Road End on Friday. It worked fine then, but was not optimally functional on the Campania- nae bright blinking at aw. This is the second time something with a close thread to switch on design has packed in on me.
Its probably because I left it too loose, which is a shame because used properly -ie competently- it seemed like a nice bit of kit. The "Lovingly-crafted-in-resin-facsimile-of-a-divers-fin-whistle" has been secretly supplied to three and a half year old Sam, much to the chagrin of his parents. So, all in all an excellent ten pounds worth!
I also got the ten stainless steel karabiners and these seem to be excellent. I can see some the plastic clips on my kit being pensioned off quite soon.
A wee aside on the Lidl mask. I bought one last year and have used it on a number of dives and my mate Bob bought one and was using it yesterday. The mask seems good but has anybody noticed that it has a strange optical quality because of the side panel of glass that is parallel to your peripheral vision?
As your vision moves from the side panel to front panel, whole chunks of underwater scenery seem to disappear for an instant before materialising in front of you. Bob agreed with me that this was in fact the case, so there is either an interesting explanation in terms of optics or the mask's silicon is coated in a subtle but effective hallucinogenic substance. Any thoughts?
i want one of those masks...:D
I first got a Lidl mask last year & updated with the new model this time. I think that they're great. The peripheral vision is actually quite useful for keeping an eye on your buddy if they tend to stay behind you for most of the dive. You can just turn your head slightly & see their image in the corner panel: quite cool. I find this year's mask has much better all-round vision than last year's. Great value! :D

I liked last years better as it has the nose valve, which I quite like. This years seems a bit big for me and I'm not too keen on it. I only tried it out it the pool.
I'd agree Charlie, it is cool if just a touch disconcerting. But is it a purely optical effect? I think more research of the layer of hallucinogens smeared on the silicon is necessary, and by the looks of things Stewart is volunteering as a dive-test-dummy. Do you think a research grant would be available?
Gerry.

Purely optical and has nothing to do with alcohol consumption from the night before. The effect is due to refraction, our eyes are adjusted to air-eye refraction, when you drop in a glass surface air-glass-air-eye produces some refraction but the effect isn't as great at water-glass-air-eye, the visible angle is reduced such that light from acute angles to the normal of the glass is allowed to enter but obtuse angles are reflected. Taking this into account look at the angle between the side, periphery, glass and the masks main glass section, roughly 90deg as I recall, ... (trails off) ... perhaps a diagram would be easier, lemme pop off and draw something up.

Did your Lidl mask from last year have a nose valve, DG? Ours didn't (unless I've been particularly unobservant).

Aye, nice try with the scientific explanation, Mark, but we both know that Gerry's theory is much more likely. Lidl obviously smear the inside of the nose pockets with lysergic acid diethylamide to make our diving experiences more fulfilled!

Lynsey (Urchin) bought my mask for me last year. it was from Lidls. Maybe they had more variety last year. Anyway this years is too big. Not too fussed about it:(
I bought a lasagne from Lidl once.
After cooking it ( I use the term ‘cooking’ loosely, more like ding food..) I started to eat some, to my horror I uncovered a wee strip of meat? with hair on it.
Looked not unlike an eye-lid with big long lashes.
Just a bad trip man. Lidl stopped putting kaleidoscope eyes into lasagne year ago and decided it was more fun to mess with with divers minds.
Now everybody sing along:
"Picture yourself on a train in a station,
With plasticine porters with looking glass ties,
Suddenly someone is there at the turnstile,
The girl with kaleidoscope eyes.
Lucy in the sky with diamonds(diamonds).
Lucy in the sky with diamonds(diamonds).

Ah... Ah...
Cheers,
Gerry.

I have one of the dry bags, got it 2 years ago... its massive. Its more than big enough for the stuff I need to keep dry on the rib.
