I've stopped practising using my blob, so yesterday afternoon i thought id send it up, well attempt to. With my old sherwood oasis regs orally inflating it due to a large exhaust port was a doddle. however with my atx 40 it wasnt quite so simple, combined with the fact the blob was down and to the left there fore each time i tried to put air into it it was coming out the right hand side of my reg. Combined with trying not to laugh at my own incompetance it was a disaster. So next dive im practicing again and again and again untill the thing inflates.

It was so funny, I'm amazed I managed to keep my reg in my mouth from laughing so much.
Fairs, fair and all that my navigation skills didn't quite get us back to the entry point and my gas switch to the side slung could have been much smoother, still not as funny as watching all your exhaust bubbles go to the surface while your dsmb was below you...

Pros - dead easy to use
can keep DSMB on the inflator handle until you want to release it
Slide and ratchet work easily
Cons - bulky to stow
errrr that's it............

Ive got one of those and hate the thing. Also need a new reel with a thumb controlled wratchet as opposed to my mge one which tends to stick
dont worry gareth, everyone makes mistakes now and again.
but the funny ones will haunt you for the rest of your life!
payback......?? :)
just wait until i win the caption comp on YD, i will send you a personal invite for your quotation.
when that day happens, this day will seem like yesterday.
but for now, your the bawbag :D
I am presuming this is a comedy vote and not legitimate.
DSMB and reel is a dangerous bit of kit if you cant use it properly!!!
Thats the boring bit, however a few pointers:
:inflating from your octopus is sometimes frowned upon as some say it could cause it free flow. (not sure I agree with that however) It is the easiest method if you can get your hands in the right place.
: inflating from your exhaled bubbles also works OK, although slightly easier from a regulator like a posieden (side exhaust) rather than a standard reg.
: why struggle, diving should be enjoyable and relaxing, get your buddy to help!! Either he holds the reel or he can inflate the sausage for you. Don't make life difficult!!
Diving is also fun, glad you can laugh at your mistakes, sorry learning process. Finding the right reel for you can be troublesome too.
Good Luck and remember bubbles want to get to the surface, thy dont like going to the sea bed :D
 I havent had problems in the past with getting it up, its lack of use and practise. Im fully aware of the dangers of using one. However im big enough and ugly enough to admit screwing up and accepting the flak that goes with it. Id be quick enough to be ripping it outta that bawbag had it been the other way round.
Thats if i could see him through the silt storm that seems to follow him about    (joking)
sounds like an amusing end to a dive!!
Me and my buddy have had problems in the past with DSMB, but that was just my reel of Death :D
Funnily enough practised same thing yesterday as well, no major mishaps but will get smoother :)

Took my brand new dsmb into the water yesterday. The smb doesn't fit in my pocket too well, so I put it in as far as it would go and hung the reel from my 'stabbie', but linked it to the smb with a carabiner in case it fell out my pocket. Then a bit into the dive I realised my buddy was caught on to me and I saw my smb caught on her first stage and the reel was caught on her hose:( Some re planning required I think. i think I will need an underwater handbag (only kidding) I could do with a leg pocket perhaps.!!!:(
What are they...?:D
Something you desperation divers hope never to have ....
What are they...?:D
having read over this thread i can only assume that they are something that always travels 'upwards'......
unlike O2 cells that seem to go 'down' at the wrong moment :D
Some might say the right moment, I didn't have to walk fully kitted through the forest and back:D :D :D

But you also missed a cracking dive

That is exactly what I fitted to my drysuit last year and for the exact purpose. My sausage goes in there along with one or two light/glow sticks on a night dive.
Even when not diving where a DSMB is required I still take it for safety reasons.
It is a nice place to store and access it from.

I'd of thought your sausage would of got all soggy in your pocket, they are far better in a bread roll with hp sauce.
 I havent had problems in the past with getting it up, its lack of use and practise.
I didn't have problems getting it up on sunday, but it was a bit floppy, whereas Chris' was much more solid - this is still the conversation about BSMBs?
All of this chat makes me anxious to test out my new CO2-powered blob. I ended up setting it off in bath yesterday: how sad is that? :o
Been storing my dsmb in my pocket but am going to change this. I keep it in my pocket and my reel connected to my jacket, have done for a while.
After Ar*sing about with it at the weekend (new suit, new pocket, different leg, different opening) realise much better to have bouy attached to reel and held shut with elastic cord. Is then all one unit. No messing about going into the pocket, unclipping reel, clipping on bouy and then inflating. Going to get some cord, wrap smb, clip to reel. Then only need to unclip reel, move elasticted cord and bobs your auntie. Much less messing around methinks, but just my thoughts on my setup others may do it different :)
never really had a problem in the past with a floppy DSMB, but who knows what the future holds.
i have 2 x reels & DSMB's, one of which is a CO2 (yellow), the other a self sealer(red/orange).
i keep then in my wing storage pockets as pictured below, i have a pouch on each side.
think i posted these pics before somewhere...

I use the hybrid method (is this a new thread?), Elastic bungee to hold it all together and keep it in one of the two leg pockets on my Otterskin suit. The other pocket holds about six scallops or twenty whelks or one decent sized edible crab (but they tend to nip the tender parts if you don't get both claws in the pocket!  )
