Surprised Ding hasnt posted this on here, he posted it on Finstrokes, so I will save him the bother! (hope thats OK Ding)

Well, now you have the opportunity, to petition the prime minister directly, in an open petition that will remain open for one year. And if you guys think this is a good idea, (dont forget, No Take Zones as petitioned for will create fantastic diving opportunities, with no chains smashing the bottom up amongst other things. Look at the Lundy Island experiment) could your moderators sticky the thread in an appropriate place. And if you guys think it is a really really good idea, could you put the link in your publications. And if you think it is an incredibly good idea, could you push it on to any other associated groups or forums, as this could be massive if it gets the exposure it deserves. Here is the link, and I hope you receive the petition favourably.

I would prefer we had the 12 mile limit, reinstated, for our own (what is left of it!) fishing fleet. When we joined the EEC our limit was removed and any foreign vessel could fish our waters. mad:

A major part of the fish stock problem is, quota, and what happens to the fish caught for which the boat has no quota.

If a boat has no quota for a type of fish, or it has caught it's quota of a fish type or the fish is under size the fish is 'dumped' usually dead.

I have been told that the fishery protection vessels only check UK boats in UK waters so the foreign boats can get away with murder (or rape & pillage at least).

I agree that bottom trawling is 'smashing' to bottom living organisms and scallop trawling is probably the worst of all.

Areas where no bottom trawling is allowed i.e the sea locks, would be a good idea.

Yeah, I don't think our fishermen fish for sardines etc off the Spanish coasts  Just coz they've no fish left doesn't mean they can take ours!

A further problem with fishing is that there is "no ownership" of the bottom or area, therefore there is no incentive to look after the patch and not over fish or damage the patch.
I know of prawn boats travelling over 100 miles to fish an area. When that area is fished out they go else where to ruin another patch of seabed.
