Our club is spending next week in Oban on a training trip.

We know of a few decent shore diving sites suitable for Sport Diver training.

Any you would recommend please?

Try the shore dive at Loch Carrick.
best dive in the area, rock form running from the shore straight out to 30m.
the reefs cross each other (trust your compass) & there is plenty to eat.
the 5th lay-by is the place to stop.

The Slates at Ballachulish is a very good site, any depth you want up to 55m, similar to Furnace. There is also the freshwater quarry in Ballachulish village, it's shallow but very clear, might be good for shallow training. It isn't too much of a trek from Oban.

Cheers,

Stuart

Charlie, you may already know this one, but down the hill into Oban and head for Ganavan Sands, as you come to the end of the esplanade you pass the war memorial continue round and you will see Dunolly Castle up on the hill. There is an old slip entering the water just under the castle, a good sheltered site with lots of live!. Stay within the bay though, don't venture out too far as this is the route taken my the CalMac ferries. Down side is, it can be difficult to park close to the site.

Jammy Sod!!!!! Wish it was me, I love Oban! :D

We did this site last weekend and it was great. 10-12m vis on the second dive. It would be a good training site as you can pick your depth and the slope isn't particularly steep. Good off road parking too for quite a few cars.

Thanks for the feedback: some very valuable suggestions. :D

Stewart, please excuse my ignorance, but where is Loch Carrick? It looks idyllic but I can't find it on a map! :o

cross the connal bridge just before oban.
about 15-20 miles perhaps.
will look later for directions.

I've dived Loch Creran which is about 10 miles north of the Connel Bridge.

It's a great site (there are steps that lead down to shore from the lay-by). I'm sure that we'll go back there.

Is Loch Carrick north of L. Creran?
