View Full Version : Bo'ness and Blackness Harbours
I was just wondering..
Has anyone dived, or know anyone that has dived or attempted to dive Bo'ness Harbour or Blackness Harbour or Castle?
Could be interesting, or it could be a silty muddy mess that melts you dry suit.....
Never heard of anyone, but I would suspect that it will be the silty muddy mess type of dive. The Forth is still reasonably tidal and I would have thought that this will leave mud flats, however I could be wrong.
Check out the satellite images from GoogleMap or other type website and you can see the extent of the mud flats in the area.

aye, saw them.
I'll have a drive over and give them a good dose of looking at.
Let me know if you want a buddy, as you can see I am not too far away from there!!
Sounds intriguing: I'd be interested in doing a bit of diving exploration too.
Would be great to discover a new local dive site (I live 1/4 mile from the Forth). :)
the castle footings might be worth a rummage :)
dont think you would be allowed to dive in either of the harbours for safety reasons.
well, not officially.
give me a shout, might be interested if dates suit.
I'm really interested in exploring more dive sites on the south of the Forth between the bridges. Dont get me wrong, I really like the west coast, but a 120 mile round trip 2 or 3 times a week can be a bit much.
Hmm, would be interested in going for a wee rummage as well.
Had an attempted dive at boness harbour today at high tide, couldn't see my hand in front of my face :( ,

I would have liked to have joined you but for some reason I had the shakes..

Apparently shakes on a Sunday are down to male homones bouncing around they also cause blurred vison, headaches, short temperness and lack of patience. Fortunately there are normally clear by monday mornings. And women think they have tough we have to endure this at least four times a month!!!!

Without putting a damper on your ideas...I wouldnt bother trying anything west of The Rail Bridge (up river). I have dived Port Edgar a couple of times to salvage stuff, and I have dived Queensferry Bay for the same, the vis is terrible, lights out at 4m, and on a neap tide maybe 1-2m.( but i did see 2 squid and lots of flatfish and lobsters...just!)
There is a rummage site on the North Side just round from the Rail Bridge at Carlingnose Pier, max depth 6-10m if dived on neaps maybe 3-4m vis...but you never know what you will find....it can be accessed from the shore ct me for more info.
In Dalmeny Estate i have noticed a decent site off the rocks, vis has been 5-6m at times, dont know about access, some good rocky bits at the back of Cramond Island, but access almost impossible.
Local Divers in Fife Dive at Aberdour , I have dived Inchcolm but strong currents and variable vis, Best Diving is around Inchkeith with Blae Rock being really really good, and HMS Saucy, and of course HMS Campania if the tides are right. Further south it gets silty and muddy on either coast until you get east of Musselburgh and east of Kirkcaldy (but Ive never dived from the shore in fife so maybe local divers can help).
Many years ago Divers dived at Port Seton, I had a look and although shallow looks promising at high water...A lot of sites have been forgotten over the years especially up river, and with the Forth getting cleaner who knows...worth a try.
Further down river are more known shore sites , a nice one is Seacliff at North Berwick not deep and a bit of a walk but lots of life and normally great vis, another one is the rocks below Tantallon Castle, North Berwick.
Get in touch and we can maybe look at sites and share info, north of the Road Bridge i would avoid, did look good around the rocks at Blackness, but the vis will be 'poor'.

South Queensferry
Would be interested in the two you mention at North Berwick.
When I was younger we used to have a caravan at North Berwick and used to go diving off the rocks around the Tantallon Castle area, water was gin clear if I remember, but a heck of a walk to get there.
If you have any advice, maps etc. share them ;)
