Go to the Gallery through the Site Navigation Panel on the portal page;
Look for the Gallery menu bar (just below standard bars):
My Favourites, My Albums ... Home, ... Upload Photos etc
You can just go for it and upload photos right away.
You can also create a personal album.
Give it a whirl. Only registered members will be allowed to see the full photo. casual surfers will only see the thumbnails.
