View Full Version : Bass Rock or Craigleith
Hi all,
Just got word back from Dive Safari and they will run trips at a cost of £30 per diver for a two dive trip of our choice. I would be looking to arrange this for april or may and would like an indication of who would be up for it.
If I am going to arrange it I would need people to pay me either a deposit or the full whack in advance, possibly using paypal. Can you let me know who will be up for it. I will probably post this on Scottish Divers too, so I reckon interest might be high and I will probably arrange more than one trip. No date set, just would like an indication of people up for it.
They are now based out of Dunbar, instead of North Berwick but boat journey time is about the same to Bass Rock, slightly further to craigleith.
Names down please.

Good work Chris! :D
I'd certainly be interested as would my wife (if we can get a babysitter ;)).
Bass Rock would probably be our no. 1 choice, but any site would be great I'm sure.
I can pay by PayPal no problem.
aye, slap my name down. Although I need dates as I've a busy time in April May.
Paypal no problemo.....
am interested, dates permitting.

Just re-read my email and the boat is licensed to take 12, so we might as well fill it!! First trip is looking like either 22nd or 29th April, any preference. I would like to do Bass Rock and possibly a wreck (river garry??) or two dives at Bass, any thoughts?
Great work, Chris! :)
In case they're of any significance, here are the tide data for those weekends:
Dunbar
Saturday, 21 April 2007
05:54 5.1m
11:52 0.9m
18:23 5.0m
Sunday, 22 April 2007
00:16 1.4m
06:37 4.8m
12:43 1.2m
19:13 4.6m
Saturday, 28 April 2007
01:07 4.3m
06:56 2.0m
13:07 4.4m
19:18 1.4m
Sunday, 29 April 2007
01:46 4.5m
07:34 1.8m
13:48 4.6m
19:53 1.2m
Your suggested dive itinerary sounds great to me. :D
Either 22nd or 29th April are fine for us. Now off to find my East coast dive book.........
22nd April for me, I'm in Dublin on a DW on the 29th...
stick my name down too :D
22nd looks to have the better tides, it gets my vote.
edit: hope this does not clash with my ever fruitless sub trip.
Looks like the 22nd is the favourite option. I will check with Gary for availability. Tide will be low by the looks of it but should affect it as Dunbar has a pretty deep harbour, would have been a problem out of North Berwick. Flooding tide should give a good drift on Bass Rock, not sure about the River Garry, but will ask. I dont suppose a dive at craigleith and one at Bass Rock would go down too badly.

If this is successful then a trip to May Islands could be arranged too. Been on the phone with Gary for half an hour this morning talking about options. Please dont let me down, this could be a regular Conger Alley excursion that I would be more than happy to arrange regularly. (note Gary does a lot of the east coast wrecks including the sub)

Can I send you a cheque?
Absolutely no problem, send me a PM and I will send you my address, this goes for any others who want to pay. Paypal, send me a PM and I will invoice your email address from paypal.
PS all
Gary reckons best bet would be to set out on the boat with two tanks, to save coming into harbour again. There are no compressors in Dunbar anyway, so the nearest would be North Berwick, prolonging the day. If you havent got two tanks, Gary can hire you a full tank for £6 on the day, as long as you let me know I will let him know. Those of you diving twinsets should be fine as the boat has a divers lift!!
Forgot to say the boat will be a hard boat with good facilities:
- Reasonbly sheltered good sized cabin, decent head - accessed from deck and a good storage area.
River Garry is a possibility, however it is a tidal wreck so we will need to wait to the day to see conditions at timings.
Thanks Stewart for putting me on to this dive,
I havent been on Conger Alley for yonks.
The dive sounds great, would love to go
The 22nd April would be good for me too,
Iam one of Srewart's responsibilities.
Look forward to meeting you all.
Thanks Chris for the organising

Really appreciate the quick responses. I will not cash any cheques until I have everyones deposit and its confirmed. I also wouldn't mind getting everyones phone numbers so that I can confirm and and contact nearer the date. I will return my phone number to you all to so that when I run off with the deposits you can speak to me on the beach (gullane beach, 100 quid doesnt go that far!!), only joking, just think it only fair that we can contact each other for this as if one of you dont turn up I will need to foot the rest of the bill.
Please note (this is the small print), during the trip I am not responsible for anyone except myself, I am simply the trip organisor. Each of you will be responsible for your own safety and any other issues. I am not a divemaster or any other qualification responsible for anything like this. I am also not responsible for the weather, I have not harnessed my godlike powers just yet. Although Gary (skipper) is pretty good at these kind of things. Weather and tides will also have an impact on what we can dive, but I have discussed Bass Rock and River Garry with Gary, however River Garry is a tidal wreck and we are at the mercy of the tide conditions on this one.
Any other questions PM me or raise on here.
Chris

might be an idea to add to your small print Chris.
when i organise a trip there comes a time where that person confirms their place.
in doing so they are responsibile to pay for it in full.
should they opt out for any reason then they may sell the place on, i offer help in this area as a subs bench is already in place.
if they cant sell it, they pay up or 'Bertie Baseballbat' takes their place.
if its cancelled due to weather then the deposit is offered back or moved to the rescheduled trip.
dont be out of pocket.
nice lift on the boat :)
Yep what Stewart says goes in my small print. (I presume this kind of thing is acceptable when organising over an internet forum!!)
Thanks Stewart.
PS
Mines is Brutus Baseballbat (sounds a bit more tougher than Bertie...no?) :)

I totally agree with this. When I organise a trip for our club, I now specify this. Someone cancelled on me last minute on a trip last year and I had to foot the bill. It took me about 2 months to get the money from the person concerned and I was not impressed.
Edit: this post is by Claire. Someone's been using my pc again. Hmm, I could have some fun with this...maybe start a few controversial posts.....

we will find out if my cheque does not arrive ;)
Hey guys and ladies, the cheques are coming in thick and fast, excellent and thanks for the quick responses on the PM's. I now have a spreadsheet with everyones proper name, contact number and dive qualifications (some might be a bit out of date). I am just doing this in case the skipper asks, then I dont have to come back to you all. Once all the monies are in I will post of a cheque to the skipper securing our place (although it is secured already). All we do then is sit until the week before the 22nd when I will confirm times for the meet at Dunbar Harbour.
As stated earlier, we plan to go out and stay out on the boat for both dives, so pack a good spares kit for yourself and bring enough gas supply for the dives we plan to do. None of the dives will be planned in excess of 30m, as Bass Rock maxes out at around 32m, Craigleith is shallower at about 26m and if we get to the river garry I believe it is in 30m of water too. If you require additional tanks, Garry can supply filled tanks for £6.
Now that the money is flooding, you are now responsible for the remainder, if you cancel your spot. Read my small print earlier courtesy of Stewart.
I hope everyone is OK with this, I think it is general practice.
Once I have confirmed times and sites, the only information I will need is how you take your tea and coffee :) .
Thanks again for being so prompt everyone!!
Tomy2tums wins quickest payment award (via paypal)
Claire wins first cheque through the post!
Wonder what other awards I can think of for this trip :p
Peterm and myself will be Buddy pairing, can I ask that you sort yourselves out with Buddy pairs, Garry usually insists on each buddy pair have a delayed SMB (and using it!!).
Think thats it for now.
Chris
All monies in bar one (ignoring my brother-in-law Peter, which I will end up paying) So I will get the cheque off to secure the boat tomorrow. Thanks for all the swift payments, really appreciate that gives me confidence for arranging another trip.

I have around two spaces available on the DiveSafari boat (Corvette Bullet) out of Dunbar on Sunday 25th March, need to be at the Harbour for 0930-0945, if you interested please PM me. there may be more than 2 but since it is not my trip, I dont want to hijack it too much. First come first served, £30 for two dives, no place for air fills so you need to have enough air for two dives!!
Yey, back in the water.....
Back in the water...see blog (http://www.congeralley.com/forum/showthread.php?p=6456#post6456)
The boat is very Good and the lift is just excellent. Looking forward to our trip
Ok team! Its less than a week away and we have had a good few weeks of excellent weather, heres hop;ing for a good sunday, and that the sunlight hasnt encouraged the plankton too much.
Just to confirm please that there are no call-offs and those on the reserve list can make other arrangements.
I am not looking for you to send me the money, please just bring outstanding monies on the day, although Stewart and team have already paid.
If anyone wants to bring some interesting biscuits for the biscuit report, please feel free, although Gary usually has a collection of Kit-Kats.
I will confirm meeting time later in the week.

GG and I are looking forward to it. What time is the boat leaving?
Claire,
I will confirm later once I have confirmation from the skipper. Last time ropes were off at 10am. Dunbar harbour is a deep one so it does not depend on tides, if he gives me the choice somewhere between 9 and 10 sounds reasonably sociable. I have stipulated that Bass Rock is a requirement and the River Garry if possible, although looking at the forecast, it might be two at Bass Rock in the shelter.
we could always go kite surfing, the forecast looks favourable.

Just of the phone to Garry and we have some nice spring tides at the moment, so the River Garry would not be a sensible option. Because it is early in the season he is offering us the May Isles if we want at no extra cost. He had divers out at Bass and May last week with large Viz differences, i.e. May having better and with divers coming out with scallops and lobsters for their tea!!:p
I am inclined to take him up on the offer of May Isles, weather permitting but if anyone specifically wants something else then we can discuss on the boat. The Bass would still offer a slack water dive for the first dive, with a drift for the second, although the drift could be quite a strong given the spring tides.
Garry has confirmed a Ropes of for 10am, I suggest you get yourself to Dunbar Harbour for somewhere between 0915-0930 to allow us to load the boat up.
If you get to Dunbar Harbour and drive straight passed the car park up to the west end of the harbour, the boat sits at the end, you can dump kit from your car then there is a car park just up the hill a wee bit we can use.
The boat has the option of taking on you suit to get changed into but with a full boat and if everyone wanted to do this it would be pretty cramped. I prefer my suit on on a boat anyway, but its up to you.
Just a reminder that the two dives will be out on the trip with no return to harbour for fills, so bring enough gases. If you can bring the outstanding monies and some food (selection of biscuits for the biscuit report).
Weather doesnt look too bad now, not great but hey its Scotland.
For those of you not familiar with the Isles of May
Divers arrive at the west landing on the Isle of May, a nature reserve in the Firth of Forth, where scenic archways and stacks are home to thousands of seabirds, while grey seals dart among shoals of pollack and saithe below water. There are wrecks in profusion too.
THE cave is at 6m directly beneath the cliffs, with a window at one end leading back to the open sea. When the surge is not too strong, you can dive right through it. Young, playful seals will often dart in and out of the cave with you, playing a game of hide and seek - they sneak up on you and speed off as soon as they have been spotted.

Excellent stuff, chris! :D
Was dreading opening this thread in case you were going to tell us it was cancelled (which would have been my fault after mentioning the Scottish play or something)!
Personally speaking, The Isle of May is also on Sarah & my wish-list of dive sites so we would be delighted to go there instead. We'll happily go along with the consensus of opinion on the day however. I tend to listen to experienced skippers on these matters.
Can't wait! :)
I'd prefer the May Isles, assuming a similar level of diving, as I haven't been there before and if Gary says the viz is better.
Unfortunately there is more time to be sick - oh well!
ohh dear ohh dear ohh dear...
looks like your gonna have to organise another trip to the bass rock chris!

As long as we actually get diving I'll be happy!

better do my dive gear as well i guess.
well done to chris for organising the day out.
although i have met quite a few of you before, it was good to put names to faces & meet a few for the first time.
almost as good as drinking stella in the volunteer arms afterwards.:)
Enjoyed the dives, the Bass Rock dive afterwards had a bit more to see on it, despite being a bit gloomier.
Glad I didn't go for a drink, had (some of) a pint of Magners at home with dinner and feel all dizzy - away to bed now!
