I’m running a trip out to dive the U-74 sub, 3.5 miles of the coast of Dunbar.
Saturday 10th February, ropes off will be around 11:30.
The hard-boat can hold 12 people but I have limited it to 10 divers at the moment for space.
All the places have been filled, but a few spaces may be tentative.
If you would like to be on the ‘subs’ bench (pardon the pun) for a call up, post your interest below or PM me with your contact details.
The cost will be £35 per diver, payable in advance on a confirmed space & refundable/transferable if weathered off.
The depth is around 43 meters to the seabed so I would expect you to be at the very least, qualified to 40 meters.
I would suggest twin-set diving &/or stage/deco bottles, or twin 3's for 2nd hand air divers.:)
If successful, I plan to run another trip out to dive it again in the near future.
If you would like to go, please post your interest below.

Hi Stewart,

I've finally worked out how to use Youtube....so I've added some video I took of the U74 a few years ago.. Its a bit jumpy but it does show the forward hydroplanes, external bow tube, conning tower with windows and the aft gun... It should give people an idea of what to expect.. It is a fab dive.

Thanks guys,

Re-Stewart question.... There was a lot of ambient light on that dive (not always the case!)..the light sabres were actually my puny 18W Princeton Tec torch and my buddy's UK400 (I think). A lot I think has to do with the 0.5x wideangle lens which picks up loads of light...The best thing to buy for any video. Although I hope to get some decent lights at somepoint......:D

cheers

ambient light is not something i have seen for a long time when diving.:(
i have a greenforce hid 50 watt video light i intend on using, been offered a loan of a 100 watt hid to acompany it.:D
i hope we get good viz to take full advantage of the trip.

tell us more about diving in norway, your vid was pretty cool with the espionage feel to it :D

IMPORTANT UPDATE

the trip on Saturday 10th February has been cancelled due to bad weather.
the water viz right now is very coloured & this would not be a good experience.
im trying to reschedule the trip for Sunday 25th feb or Saturday 10th of March.
i will post firm details once the dates have been confirmed.
anyone on the trip may opt out if the dates do not suit.
anyone from the trip 2 list will be offered the places first.

great bit of video Graham, just as I remember it, conditions look really good...dont expect that in the next few months unless we get a really dry spell.
For being there 90 odd years it is still in great condition.
And all these 'Sub Experts' rave about diving broken pressure hulls in the Channel!...
Anyway well done...pity about the noise of the bubbles from the open circuit divers...!!

spoke with the skipper, just to let you know, the weather looks favourable for sunday & the trip is highly likely to go ahead.
mostly off shore winds this week :)

Hope it goes well, Dived out of Eyemouth with Marinequest at the weekend and Jim mentioned you were on for Sunday, hope the vis is better than we had, 1-2m and very green....although UE74 is further up river, it is offshore and tidal so the vis should be ok at depth.

Jim advised he has marked the K Class subs , and they are in 53m, with the tops at about 45m, so do-able for air Divers ...just..They were dived last year and were awesome, huge boats and intact, vis was great and no real currents, maybe one for the summer...Jim and Iain are willing to run their Boat out to do them in the Summer.
For more info on maybe Diving them, about the K-Class, or 'Battle of the May Island' get in touch

Enjoy your Dive

Stevie

I'd be interested in doing the K-class subs if anyone else fancies it.

Cheers,

I'd be interested in either of the K's or anything else similar! As Stevie said their big, especially as their from WW1. Had a fantastic dive on K4 a few years ago, would like to dive the other one (K17?). I've got some video of K4 I'll hunt out and try and stick on YouTube..

Cheers

last minute... update

moan groan....the trip has been cancelled again!:( aarghh!
some divers have just been on the wreck a few hours ago.
the ones who hit the wreck had less than 1 meter viz.
some divers missed the wreck altogether despite using the shotline!
there is also a large swell on the water, higher than predicted.

i will be e-mailed new times tomorrow & will post them accordingly.

third time lucky :)

Sorry to hear that your trip was off, seems conditions havent improved much in a week, the water on the East Coast is very cold at 6 degrees at the moment, so not good for long Deco. Give it a few weeks, dont know what is causing the bad vis, not a great deal of rain, but it has been very windy, the water looks very green, but too cold for plankton...

A bit of interest in the K Class Subs, so I will speak to Jim and Iain and sort out dates in the summer and Ill advertise the trip here first.

3rd time lucky i hope for you all...(hope for light winds and no rain for a couple of weeks, and try to pick a neap tide date)

i suspect the west coast was far better than the east coast.
but hey...3 months wait & the third attempt!!!
still doing cartwheel celebrations :D
got the vid uploaded to the PC, will take ages to edit.
tune in tomorrow :)

Superb, Stewart. We were out of Dunbar too and that was some swell to be doing the sub. We opted for the easy, west side of Bass Rock, still pretty surgey (is that a word?). Cant wait to see the vid!

stew

'surgey' works for me.
no vid tonight, perhaps tomorrow.
you will have to make do with the blog for now.......;)
