So I now know that at 4 deg,
My semi dry is still warm :D although my hands did get damn cold despite 5mm gloves..
My face HURTS when I put it into water that cold,
My regs do not like filling tyres up "for a laugh" in that temp and a freeflowing reg is *even* colder to breathe from :o (ahh well, we were ready to go for a heat after half an hour in anyway!!)
Nice site though, we shall return!
Oh and my buddy pitched the tent properly while we were down there so if you get bored you can always go for a snooze in it now

Yes, was very busy, loads of people training from Deepblue Diving (Edinburgh I think) we went into the water further down to the right from the car park, no problems at all, had a really pleasant day.

First east coast dive of the year for me. The viz was marginably better in the top 15m - 4m, but deeper there was a lot of silt - possibly too springy a tide
Yup we dived the infamous HMS Vicinity today :o
CLOSE to the Mallard but I got the tides wrong (dropped about an hour before hw slack) so the shot was dragging and once we reached bottom we discovered that the apparently non existant tide on the top was *screaming* along on the bottom!
Viz around 3-5m but it was largely immaterial for us :(
Then to top it all got back up to the boat and found the wind had come up so we had a vomit inducing swell/roll for the trip back to Anstruther...
But hey, by the time we'd cleared the computers we'd been in long enough to log a dive at least :p

Yes Bikerbill, that was me with the DSMB, just getting some practice in deploying it and of course 'hanging' onto it during my safety stop.
Then to top it all got back up to the boat and found the wind had come up so we had a vomit inducing swell/roll for the trip back to Anstruther...
That was due to the swell in the Forth, not due to the cox of the boat....
You Army types, what a bunch of girls!!!:D
gogs
and I was being so nice to you too... not blaming the cox for keeping us waiting fully kitted up while he missed the mark four times trying to shot it and then forgot to cut the throttle once the shot was being deployed :p
Besides, being affected by seasickness doesn't make you weak, allowing it to stop your diving is weak :D
Mind you, that was our most expensive dive in a while at well over £1/minute  lol

Nah, the wreck wasnt there because someone moved it.... the same person who moved the boilers round the back of the May....
I hate it when someone moves the wreck, it really spoils the dive.

Dive #1: Catalina Wreck Isle of Cumbrae.
Temp: 8 Degrees.
Vis: 4 mts in shallows and Maybe 2.5mts around Wreck.
Tide: filling.
Conditions: raining,overcast but calm.
Max depth: 22 mts.
Last dived the wreck on 19/08/05. Noted in log book at the time that the wreck had broken up quite a bit since my previous dive, found this to be even more so now. Had a pleasent dive with Hermit crabs galore, some small pollack and wrasse, pipefish and all the usual critters (Long clawed squat lobsters,Velvet swimming crabs, spiny starfish etc). Plus a large (unfortunately) dead lobster under what remains of the wing, which was providing a meal for the hermits etc.
February 24th 2007.
Dive #2: Cricton Reef, Isle of Cumbrae.
Temp: 8 degrees.
Vis: 5-6mts.
Tide: Filling (just about H/W).
Conditions: Calm and Sunny.
Max depth: 6.6 mts.
Very Shallow dive. We just picked a spot that looked interesting and gave it a shot. Named it Cricton Reef cause it lay just of Cricton Road in Millport. Very nice shallow reef to about 4 metres with a sandy bottom beyond it. We swam out a good bit but didn't get any depth. Reef was excellent though with plenty of nooks and crannies to peer through/under. Not much in the way of fish life (maybe its still early?) but lots of crabs, Squat lobsters,Ragworms (had never seem them moving round under water before) Prawns,Dahlia and burrowing Anemones. Also plenty of Mermaids Purses ( I assume it has recently been mating time for the doggies?).
February 24th 2007.

I'm worried that rather than a cool, calm, scientific, nay Victorian Gentlemanly discussion of diving conditions ( as our Lord and Master, Gord initially intended ;) ) this thread is degenerating into a..... Willy Wonka orgy of chocolate treats best savoured when you're cold and wet  and been to 30+m for 50 minutes
This chocolate biscit hijack must stop - otherwise Gord wil have to chart not Viz and Temp versus time but the fads and fripperies of chocoholic treats.
You have been warned.

now biting.
how about a scale of 1-10 .
10 being massive swarms and they are flying up your nose and into your
eyes and swallowing them and cant eat your pieces without a mask and hood
on .
sunday was about a 2 , when we arrived they were about so slapped some repellar on , none during suface time as raining.

Mostly luck, I just took as many photos as I could in the hope that some might work out. Visibility was decent except the clouds of sand and up on the side of the wreck the vis wasn't too variable, remaining around 3m or so.
Access, there was still a gate over what I'm guessing was the entrance, we parked in the layby and kitted up on the shore beneath before taking a little swim to the regular entrance point.
Excuse my ignorance but which ones are the Nephrops?

Hey, worry not about the kicking, no bruises this morning! Remember I'm a competitive club swimmer, getting kicked is perfectly normal!
At one point last night I tried Butterfly Kick, that's SCARY with diving fins on!
I could tone my abs good style if I did that for 200m 7 nights a week for a month! (Hang on, 3mm wetsuit, 4 - 6lbs weight, mask and snorkle, what a workout kicking parallel to the beach in 1m. Lunderston Bay here I come!)

Dive Times: 46 and 45mins
Midges: Feckin' Loads of the wee blighters.
Booze Consumed on Saturday night in the campsite: A couple of bottles of Merlot, a bottle of Rioja, a bottle of Hardys Stamp and a Jacobs Creek Chardony. A 'Few' bottles of Miller & Nastro Azuro, and a rather large amount of Bunnahaven. (not all by myself I might add, but amongst the group, which included Deep Seeker, Lars, Ian8ken and Prop Guard)
I'm heading up to Skye next week and want to dive this wreck. But I'm the only diver in my group so I need a buddy. Did you use a local shop/guide or just turn up with full tanks and got on with it.
It should also be pointed out that if you can remember everything you drank you weren't drunk enough.....

Wed 27/06/07
Site: 300m S of McInroy's Point Ferry Terminal, Gourock
Weather: Bright and breezy (westerly wind), reasonable waves
Depth: 15m
Vis: 1m in shallows, then increasing to 4 -5m
Dive Time: 35mins
Tide: low ebb
A nearly blind swim through the lentil soup at 2.5m until the slope, vis started to improve below 6m. Not surprising given that the westerly force 3-4 had a 3- 4 mile fetch onto a shingle and shell sand shore.
A fairly uniform slope of shell sand running away into the depths. Not a lot of fish-shaped life, but we (T2T and I) saw a lot of different types of starfish, several squat lobsters, some large sea urchins and a surprisingly large number of dead crabs! Lots of live crabs too though, so we didn't panic about toxic water! A few fairly robust and substantial anenomes too, many of them growing on top of an isolated lorry tyre in about 13m.
This is a site which has it all above the surface: roadside parking, concrete ramp down onto shore, shingle beach, kitting-up rock (can sit on edge of ledge, put on tank & BCD, put fins on, shuffle 1m into water). Sounds ideal. It's a bit of a shame that it doesn't have more to offer below the surface. It would be a handy site for Inverclyde divers as a training site or simply to do bouyancy tests on new kit, but I don't think I'll be making it a regular dive site.
Mind you, I did notice that the shore gets rockier a wee bit further south, wonder if it extends into a reef!
