View Full Version : Clyde Scallops
Ok, here it is then. Are Clyde scallops ok to eat, generally? Personally, I won't eat them because i can't believe they're immune to teh chemical output of Glasgow. They're basically living in a natural u-bend. Some clubs initiate their members by making them eat a raw one. Jeeeee sus!

can't you just sit them in fresh water for a few days to flush all the crap out them????
Is that your recommendation as a scientist?
i never eat sea food since the Egyptian resturant incident:eek: , which is another story i may share one day.
however; one year on & i must admit i have been partial to the scallop from the clyde.
in actual fact we generally collect them on the first dive & cook them on the boat along with our sausages, black pudding haggis etc. & soff the lot before the 2nd dive.
scallops collected on the 2nd dive go home.
they must be O.K. to eat as i'm still alive!

the Egyptian resturant incident
hmm. never had one of those... though on the same issue.. i have had a dose of 'deli belly' when one individual in our party (who shall remain nameless) suggested we go for a mexican.... i can only report that what ensued, should have been a candidate for the comedy awards!!! it was... if nothing else... almost entertaining!!!
I was at a seminar last week at our university department presented by scientists from the Food Standards Agency. One of them spent quite a while telling us about how ubiquitous domoic acid (a toxin produced by cyanobacteria which causes amnesic shellfish poisoning) contamination is in Scottish scallops. So, at the end, I asked her straight if it was safe to eat scallops collected from sea lochs. Apparently, most of the toxin is concentrated in the hepatopancreas, so as long as the scallop is properly shucked it should be OK from that point of view (she admitted to eating them herself).
However, as Gord implied, the Clyde estuary is a bit different from a sea loch & there are other considerations present (e.g. heavy metals, PCBs, coliforms to name a few). Clean water depuration might help with purging some of them, but I don't think that I would be tempted to indulge!

what you need to do is employ a theory my grandfather employed (he was a doctor)... (no really he was, an actual real doctor with a practice and everything..) he always maintained that dirty children are healthy children.. meaning that basically you build up a tolerance to germs and diseases due to contact with them.. (THE SAME WAY MANY VACINES WORK) so... eat Clyde scallops...f**k the heavy metals and such.. start off with one or two.. build up the numbers slowly.. and eventually you will have a stomach like iron...
and should you die....
firstly... it isn't my fault... (who in their right mind would listen to my advice????)
secondly.. you can be certain of a high turn out at your funeral... (i will personally post it on here!!!)
I hear Clyde scallops are an aphrodisiac!
Tempted now??
I just remembered the Mexican jalapeno pepper restaurant incident as well.
By feck was that hot!
Sometimes I’m in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Or perhaps I’m just a greedy barsteward who will eat anything!
haha, just looked at the poll, guess that must be Stu n I.
What can I say...mmm yumm.
So thats why my memory is shot to feck!
