Does anybody know if the computer needs to be sent away to get a new battery fitted or can it be done in the LDS.
Thanks,
/Colin. :D
 Got to be done by suunto.Cost approx £50,including postage.Returned in about three days max.(normal time of year)
most Suunto computers have user changable batteries, the Vyper is no exception.
Dive shops will sell you a Suunto battery package which includes a lithium battery & an O'ring for about £20.
personally, i buy a replacment battery on ebay for about £2 & grease the existing O'ring.
did this many times & will be doing it again this week as my Vytec is suggesting it has a low battery.

is the only one on ebay i can find at present, £4 is steep for this battery.
open the back & view the battery number, pop into maplins, probably get one for less than £1.
the other alternative is, as ian suggests, pay Suunto £50  to do it.
ok, finally got the finger out & opened my computer.
took me longer to open the garden shed than it did ther computer due to the swolen door.
the battery code is CR2450N.
you can get these from here if you have an ebay account.
http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/search.dll?from=R40&satitle=cr2450n
much cheaper than the last post i put up.
if you dont have an ebay account, i just bought a few (save on postage) & i will give you a battery.

Hi guys. I'm in the jewellery/watch trade and hold these batteries in stock. Would happily supply them if you have any trouble in the future.

Thanks Guys'
OK Don't mind paying to get my kit serviced, but bugger getting ripped off (£50.00 FFS!)
Going to be in Falkirk on Tuesday anyway, so I'll pop into Mapling and see if I can pick one up. I'll need to check it is the same battery for the Yyper as Stewart needed for his Vytec.
Next question. How easy is it to open up the computer? Don't want to try and save myself a few bob if I end up buggering up the computer completely.
Stewart, You mentioned "grease the existing O'ring." Is this just standard silicone grease that we use for our cylinder O rings? or is it different stuff?
Not a complete numpty, just "fear of the unknown".
Thanks again,
/Colin. :D
Colin,
the Vyper, Vytec, Gecko & Cobra use the same battery, so the one you are after is the CR2450N or the CR2450 which has replaced the CR2450N but i have never used one so cant garuntee a positive fit.
the Vytec is easier to open than the Vyper, but its simple enough.
simply remove it from the strap/holder.
then the 2 parts are quite obvious, just seperate them with muscle power by twisting them clockwise, the case will seperate.
lift the back case off revealing the circular section you see on the back of your computer.
this is an 'orangy' coloured hard plastic cover to the battery compartment.
remove it carefully as the O'ring lives right underneath it.
once removed, the battery will be exposed, i think it is held in place with a small metal retainer, which slides to the side.
remove & replace battery. replace retainer by sliding back.
the O'ring, 2 choices, if it looks well & you didnt touch it or get any hair or other foreign bodies on it, then leave it & replace the battery cap & back case, refit into strap.
if the o'ring fell on the floor & landed in yesterdays cornflakes crumbs then it must be cleaned & greased. any silicone grease will do. the one you use for cylinder o'rings is perfect.
again if there is any signs of cracks etc then it must be replaced.
i have changed my batteries about 3 times, twice i did not grease the ring as it looked fine.
if you need any help, i live 5 minutes along the road from you.
some interesting reading.

cheers snorkel123, will keep that in mind.
just found this link about battery fitting instructions.

also found this guy to be the cheapest on ebay if you buy more than one battery, there is no additional charge for postage.

Snorkle123, how much would you charge for a battery?
maplins dont do the CR2450N but they do stock the CR2450 at £1.99

Good thread.
Always keep a spare battery in your dive log folder/ spares box - I've had to give out my spare battery twice on dive trips when other diver's computers have died on them.

OK! Managed to change the battery. Bought CR2450 from Maplins for £1.99.
Pretty straight forward job, with the only tools used being a small flat bladed screwdriver and a straightened paper clip. Used the screwdriver to help loosen the circular “clip” and the paper clip to push the pin holding the strap out. The O ring is in good nick so a light grease and re-assembled.
The original battery was a CR2450 so it was a straight forward swap. Even managed to keep all the historical information, so well chuffed! :D
Just need to see if it's still watertight. Hopefully next week.
Thanks to everyone who responded and especially Stewart.
Thanks,
/Colin.
well done colin,
your a pro now.
as alex says, always keep a spare one handy.
we now know the CR2450 fits the suunto computers, so this has been worthwhile to us all.

they are even cheaper!, 5 batteries for £2.60 inc postage = 52p each.
how much are alladin batteries?

Better to stick to the top quality Renata batteries Stewart, their swiss made and the best on the market.
The cheaper ones on ebay are to be honest rubbish, it's a false economy - certainly won't last as long and probably let you down when you need it most.
Brian
cheers for the advice Brian.
a dive buddy sent me this link tonight.
he was changing a battery & found this video.

the computer is a Vytec.

I find the only fiddly bit is getting the strap off so you can remove enough of the boot to easily change the battery. For this you need a 3cm long, thin, strong pin to push the pin that retains the strap out - I use a fine spindle I found in one of my boxes of 'spares'. Now I keep that in my divebox as well.

Makes it look so easy.:D
i generally dont remove the strap.
makes it a little more difficult, but i find it easier than removing it.
Brian,
Thanks for the tip, just looking at some Renatta batteries on ebay at the moment to purchase for spares.
Stewart, how do you change it without taking the strap off? Not completely off, but at least the large surround prized away from the back??
I have changed 3 now and that last one I forgot about that bit and was confused for the first wee while then remembered. It really is quite simple.
Woohoo, just purchased pack of 4 from ebay for 99p plus £1 p&p.
Pretty good deal I think, it was the renatta type!

Hi All,
Just found this thread after trawling (not trolling.) the archives.
Love the advice and always ready to do something cheaper. I have replaced my own Vyper batteries in the past but always with the official Sunnto kit including plastic bit and O ring.
My only concern with the advice given is my engineering background has trained me to always replace an O ring if removed. I'm sure greasing the old one will do the job but, if I can get hold of a replacement which should only be pennies, I'd prefer to do so.
Anybody got a reference for the O ring so I can source replacements?
(One of our members runs a seal company, www.acornseals.com (http://www.acornseals.com) so should be able to get a bucket load for bugger all.:D)
I bought a bunch of batteries for the Suunto from fleabay but no o-rings, if you have any spare going i would happily shout you a twix or a kitkat if you are willing to trade :D for orings
