Do you actually think Trimix diving will still be available for all in the future.
In the last ten years I have seen the price for a twin set (12's) fill go from £38 (2001) upto £105 (2010) and it is still going up. I am planning a trip next around Malin Head and the gas bill for OC will be 400..ish and CCR 50.
This price hike is definately affecting Tekkie training.:(
£105 for Twin 12's what robbing B is charging that much? I'm getting a set of twin 15's filled with 18/40 for £57.50.

Yes the price varies from shop to shop.....It is over the top. If I didnt have a rebreather I would have to add another £150 to all Tx courses:(any way I have a rebreather:D
It's all just balloon gas anyway!

£60 ish gets me twin 12's full of 18/40 ish
about 3 pence per litre ish............
then you have to add a couple of fills of rich stuff to deco off.
I'm, more likely to dive in the 40 meter range on air as a result. I think I will do about 5 mix dives this year ish....

Do you teach OC trimix on a rebreather then?
Its getting quite scarey - running a few irish trips next year and currently being quoted 5.3p per litre.
Not too bad for me on the unit but the OC guys going will be pricey.
I know the unit will never pay for itself in terms of gas but already after 4 weeks of mix diving this year (10/50) with the gas bill averaging £40 a week, an OC pal was on £45+ a day...

Hi Ian,
I have just ordered Helium today and it is cheaper than when i started blending a year ago.
The fixed charges are the killer and now that VAT has gone up that's another little on-cost.
Even allowing for standard charges, I calculate a fill for 1.4 p /litre that works out at around £25 for the Helium content in a 12 x 2 19 / 33 mix.

Not trying to be difficult, I think the BSAC standard has been written to allow that as well, was just interested :-)

hi,
where are you based and how much per litre for 02
thanks
kenny
5p/litre? Ouch!
I usually take all the dil I need with me and just decant every couple of dives. I bought a few 3's off Ebay as well (I think the most I paid was £25), for long weekends or if their arsey about you decanting your own gas I just take them, I get 3-4 days out the 2 pairs of bottles. Not so easy if you go abroad though.
I think OC mix diving will be dead in a few years. I don't know why anyone would want to, apart from the gas costs the limited bottom times just don't make it worthwhile. I was on a trip where everyone was on OC apart from me and I was using the boat's gas, everybody paid about £300 for gas for the week, mine was £18.

Exellent
Finally a sensible answer !!!
OC Tx days are numbered, that will just leave the deep stuff to rebreathers and depths will be our playground;)
But seriously trip such as Malin Head, divers will really suffer cost wise on OC and it will be harder to fill expeditions.

Hi Ian,
Will not make Malin Head, got another little trip up my sleeve :-) But have managed a few in the 50 -60 range this year so far.
Just about given up with the east coast though, seven out of twelve dives blown out :-(
My new motto is "Go West young man"...
To answer the other guys questions. i am paying £140 for a cylinder of Helium, that Includes VAT and standing charge. O2 is about £40 including charges.
I am supplied by BOC on my company account, but you still have to have a blending ticket, and they also will not deliver to a private address.
I did make an offer last year If anyone wanted to get together for doing mixes, but got no real response, so I just do it for the club members.

yep in euros its 6.5 cents a litre for he and i think 3 cents for 02, current exchange makes it approx 5.3p a litre...
If its exped diving thats exactly what i do too - take several pre blended tins and decant etc - or if the boat has the gas i just get top ups.
But for going over on the ferry it gets complicated... couple of instructors got stopped and checked last week and had to empty all their cylinders before they could travel... all that gas going to waste - i would have cried...
can you imagine doing that if you had several twin sets all filled up and ready to dive??

All this talk of 400 odd quid for gas for a weeks OC diving makes me want to buy a Sentinel or Inspo Vision.
Makes me want to buy it NOT pay for it.
At that price the cost of a rebreather doesn't look so bad.
I'm not TRIMIX trained by the way (yet).
Seen a Sentinel at Crappers on Saturday, bloody huge big thing.

Yeah apparently they weigh a tonne as well but thats all relative as the lighter the unit the more lead you need to add. They appear to be VERY robust in their design which I kinda like. Also has BMCL which I think I'd prefer (less clutter). Having said that they are a tad pricier than an Inspo Vision.
Having said all the above I'm still some way away from buying a CCR having just sold a kidney to buy the RIB. I'm slowly running out of internal organs. :crying:

It's just an appearance :D A mate of mine's has just gone back to them for about the third time this year and from what he says that's not unusual with them. You're right about big, I always seem to be the one that has to pull the box out of the back of my car when unloading... funny that...:scared:
