Looks like some sort of larvae. was about 10cm long in shallowish water (8m) at North berwick. Any ideas? (sorry about poor quality, had the camera on macro and with both me and the kelp getting swished about I had little to no hope of getting it focus.

Did you mean 10mm prehaps ?
If those things are 10cm I think I'll just stay on dry land from now on !!

10mm it is!

Although I have a couple of pictures of big ugly bug things in the water in the maldives - so if this thing puts you off at 10cm then you'd hate tropical paradise :D

That's a risk I'm prepared to take :D

No this was bigger than 10mm, it was closer to 10cm in length, I was really surprised by it, look at the width of the kelp frond it is on. might not be idotea granulosa, as just checked on MarLIN and they state maximum of 20mm, at 20mm Peter would not have seen it!

Sorry, no you are right, it wasn't as small at 10mm. Maybe not 10cm, but certainly a good number of cm long. With size distortion underwater maybe 5-7cm - that about right Chris? But then with my vision, maybe it was about a foot!

taking water/mask magnification, yeah probably 6-7cm.
