Two dives with Charlie McGurk.

5 Wrecks. Undid security fence and over tipped rubble onto shore. Tide almost to access track (2 hours to HW). I lead the dive. Finned straight out (aiming for two green lights mounted above each other to the left of Faslane base) in diabolical viz and found first wreck straight off in 10 to 12m. Bumped my head on hull before seeing it. Swam round it twice. I couldn't find block or rope leading to second wreck. Aimlessly swam round and bumped into first wreck again. Did a buoyant feet ascent and had to spin out - and lost the wreck. Swam aimlessly about again finding an upturned rowing boat. Fortunately, then found first wreck again. Swam round twice again then headed for shore. Exiting on the shore was with a searchlight from a MOD RIB. Then the Coulport Police turn up and take our details - cops were OK, one a spearfishing freediver from the east and the other an ex Northern Diving Group navy diver who reckoned that Oman was the best diving he had seen. Max 13m for 46 mins. Viz 1m. Temp 11 degrees tho' colder on surface.

A Frames. Again tide was up to the stone ramp (at HW). Charlie lead the dive. Lots of looking at his compass but brought us straight to the concrete blocks at 20m and then back to the A Frame at 18m which we spend 10 mins on. Usual Finnart sea life and sights throughout. Viz marginally better. My faith in compass navigation was restored by his bringing us back close to the Finnart pier (OK 20m from the exit under the phone box!). Max 20m for 45 mins. Viz 2m. Temp 11 degrees tho' much colder in surface 10m.

Anchor Inn, Garelochead for a pint.

Yeah, a most enjoyable couple of dives. Very impressed by Alex's prowess at finding (on several occasions) the first wreck: he must have a built in homing sensor (a very useful attribute). Equally impressed by his ability to chat nonchalantly to the military police despite the fact that they were obviously trying to figure out if we were kosher. I think that the elaborate description of how to find the wrecks and the vivid imagery swung it. Such obvious enthusiasm couldn't be concocted by a potential terrorist!

Was relieved on the second dive that I managed to find the A-frame OK. The viz was markedly better making it a great relaxed dive.

Only snag was that my neck seal was leaking. :( Will have to get it off for a new one: I'll borrow the wife's suit for tomorrow (I always new that getting the larger boots on her suit would pay off)! ;) Does anyone have any experience of using FYM for suit repairs (would save a trek into Glesga)? Airmonster maybe??

Ding,

Tut Tut. Of course I did.

I did stop at the Faslane security gate and explain that we were going to dive when I passed at 17.30. The cops were from Coulport not Faslane. They said they patrol the ?16m circuit of the Rosneath penninsula. They, or one of their buddies in another patrol car, had obviously seen our two parked cars opposite Faslane and stopped to speak to us once we were out.

I think it was Charlie's shaven head that got them worried :D

sounds like an entertaining night out guys.

Charlie,
i use FYM regularly as it's 2 minutes from my work.
I have never used them for suit repairs as i do my own seals, which is easier than it sounds & happy to give you advice/instructions if you decide to try it.
a couple of the guys in my club have used FYM without any problem.
i think the turn around was one week.

Hi Charlie,

I've used FYM a few times. It really depends on the repair. If it's something like a valve then Mitch (Alan Mitchell) will fix it on-site. For cuff or neck seals he might need to send it away. It's worth a phone call anyway 01324 665071 (Mitch is working this weekend). Open 12 to 4 on a Sunday.

HTH.

Sounds like classic 5-wrecks visibility. Especially the wreck-location-by-head-bumping method. :D
