View Full Version : Best dive site in the Sound of Mull?
What's your favourite site (scenic or wreck) in the Sound of Mull?
I know that the Breda isn't technically in the Sound, but it often features on trips there, as a last splash on the Sunday evening on the way back into Oban. And it's still one of my favourite dives. A nice big wreck, sitting upright on the seabed, with great swim-throughs and loads of interesting stuff buried in the holds.

Well,
Had to have a look at my logbooks for this one! I first dived the Sound in 2000! In that trip my fav dive was probably the Thesis due to the marine life that was present, and the atmospheric 'ribs' of the ship as i said in my logbook! The vis that day was around 8m too.
In that trip i also had one of my most eventful dives! I had forgotton about it! Was on the Shuna - before getting to the wreck (as written in my logbook)
a) got cramp in my legs
b) got tangled on the shotline
c) octopus freeflowed
d) my SPG dissappeared!
After all that i had a good dive though!
But then the next time i dived the sound the best dive for me was the Hispania.... And i saw a seal while on the Tapti! But i suppose thats not really the wreck itself!
Which shall i vote for?....

Calf Island.
What's an SPG?
Short way to say pressure gauge!
SPG - 'Submersible Pressure Gauge'
duh ... ............
When conditions are right with excellent vis Calve Island:) Wall.
Having said that the dive can be complete crap if you don't hit it right, vis wise :(
Maybe I should have added Lochaline Pier: another awesome wall. Although I've got a complex about it since getting caught in a down-current on a foolish solo effort in 2002 ... You also see a lot of porpoises round there ... what a fab site! Can't wait for August!!!!! :D :D :D

The Breda is a great wreckie dive you can go in the bow and apart from the broken bit come out the stern. You can rummage in the holds, I luv in the holds I come out filthy with a smile on my face sandpaper can't rub off. And after a bank holiday u can dive the outside of the wreck and collect all the dive kit dropped by holiday divers. What more could u want :D
mmm now this is a tough one, i thought the thesis was superb with the brilliant viz and quite intact structure, but also loved the ronda - makes a nice change getting onto the wreck and doing your safety stops on / v near to the wreck instead of a shot line descending into the gloom.
Think it'll have to be the thesis
