View Full Version : Gas Team Training
Hi Guys
now that the water is not near freezing we want some proper deep stuff from you.
Talking to a few guys that skipper out Loch Long and Loch Fyne to start looking for new tanks and stuff.
But before we can do that some built up dives are needed, the Kintyre is always an option during the week but for weekends we need some ideas, not the slates though.!!!
Anyone who had an interest in the gas team put up suggestions for places to dive between 50m-70m that isn't too far out of the way and ill start organising dates.
We really are looking for team spirit rather that club rules which is why im asking you guys to get your wee brains working and pick the places that interest you.
So get your thinking cap on ladies and get back to me.
cheers
Lindz

Can't think of any local sites that are in the 50m - 70m range apart from GDRE, The Wall at Lochaline and of course The Slates.

The Black Wall Loch Lomond.
You can get depth in both Loch Long and Loch Fyne if you don't mind long swims and nothing to look at. I've had over 50m from Finnart but it was a hell of a long swim and possibly the most boring dive I've ever done. There is a deep drop if you swim west out from the Red Rocks north of Largs, another mega-dull dive though. Loch Duich is good for depth from the shore, cracking vis usually as well, lots of life. Loch Nevis is good too but harder to get to. I've dived there by boat but I'm not sure if there's anything other than forestry tracks on shore. The island at Bonawe quarry drops in steps to about 60-odd and is a nice dive, always lots of life and usually decent vis. Loch Ness goes mega-deep and 30m there is like 60m elsewhere, good for one dive, I wouldn't like to make a habit of it. Easdale quarry used to be an old favourite back in the day when the weather was crap and you didn't mind passing through the suspended keech layer at 30m. Not been there for years, supposed to be nicer now the outfalls are closed up.
If you ask me, if you want to do depth progression then book on a boat and start doing deeper wrecks. Doing depth off the shore doesn't really teach much other than gas consumption, a 50 or 60m wreck dive is a lot further from the surface than a 50 or 60m shore dive where you can just swim up the sand with everyone else. Things change when you realise on a wreck that you are a long way from the shotline if something happens. You don't get that doing depth of the shore, wreck diving is a lot more demanding mentally, water is water and it's the mental part that needs work before going deeper.

the wreck at loch striven is about 40-45 but best off a boat fair bit of a swim from shore.
We were at the caravan site at Furnace and hes saying he charters dive boats out for about £30 a head 6 divers for a whole day, hes got the coordinates for a few cool things like landing crafts and tanks, a wee possibility im thinking.
And our dearest Kenny is resurecting his RIB this year so should get out and about on that soon hopefully...wouldnae want you doing too much exercise Regthing gotta watch yourself at your age ;);)(just kiddin)
I will stick a trimix in the inspo and see how long it takes to get 60 -70 metres off the back of the Kintyre.
