Hi guys, guessing this is the best place to ask about this.

I'm thinking about doing my nitrox stuff, was just wondering if there were any pre-requisites before i can start? also wondered about costs and timescales involved.

cheers

One person worth talking to is Gary Lawson at Divesafariscotland.com he teaches Padi BSAC and IANTD so has a good knowledge of the subject and his advice is free.
You will get his numbers on the website

You should be fine doing a Nitrox course now.

You have 2 options really, 1 is do a recreational course, such as the PADI one, you should not really need to do any dives as part of it, just the theory and have a go at analysing a gas mix and get your instructor to show you how to use your computer in nitrox mode if you have a computer that can. I don't know if SCOTSAC do something similar you could do for free?

Option 2 is do a more technical course that teaches you a few extra bits, I know the BSAC Advanced Nitrox is ok for that and it can be done through the BSAC Regional coaching scheme and can be done by non BSAC members. The TDI nitrox course would be good for that as well. Some of these need dives, some don't.

Really most courses will do what you need to. Is this to enable you to use it on holiday or really an introduction to technical diving?

Cheers,

Gareth.

Edit- Just seen you posted this in the Northern Technical Section, and I bet they would do you a good course too !!

its really for a bit of further dive skills development, part of my dive education if you like. i've got my branch instructors ticket and its sort of a next step.

i woud also like to spend a bit more time at depth on wrecks etc, and MAYBE, just maybe eventually get on to a rebreather - that is a few years and a lot of penny saving away though!!

so yeh its basically just to give myself a bit more diving know-how etc!!

If your looking to improve your skill base generally as well as get the ticket, deffo go for a Course that teaches you more than just the basic theory.

I've got several friends who are students / just graduated who have gone down the twin set route as well. Best way is to contact an instructor who you think might be able to help and have a chat with him / her and see what they would recommend. There are a few instructors on here that have a lot of personal recomendations, that has got to count for a lot.

If you want some general background information. BSAC publishes its workshops and all the technical back up on its web site:

http://www.bsac.com//page.asp?section=1539&sectionTitle=Instructor+Resources+Centre

The links on the right hand of the page show :

Ocean Diver nitrox workshop and sports diver nitrox workshop. Have a read of those, its a good introduction and free lol

If its BSAC your looking to do then Gary at divesafari is the person you need to speak to his is the only BSAC Technical Centre in Scotland
The one thing you need to make sure you cover before any course is just whats included ie gas, boat costs, certification, as there are a few horror storys about cheap courses then the participants get stung for loads of extras that werent mentioned on signing up..

Well since this is Northern Technical's forum i guess i better do my job put my share in.

We shall be running a Nitrox course on the week beginning 13 July as usual days and times are flexible with us, thanks to Loudy you already know what the course requires, for further information send me your email address and i can send our pack which contains all information like what is covered in classroom sessions and dives and also the kit you require,

if this suits you a deco Nitrox course will also be running on Saturday 18th july which you will be more than welcome to join in, we normally like to do all classwork and exam on one day, then do your skills dives on the sunday which just leaves 2 deep dives which can be done during the week and the following weekend meaning your course can be completed in just over a week.

Sounds like a lot of work but just ask oor wee pal Regthing :D.

If your interested PM myself or email itdascotland@hotmail.com

cheers
