View Full Version : The new conger Alley

Since DG wants to let the old conger alley thread put out to pasture. Here’s a new Conger alley...

The way I dive conger alley you get to dive both reefs and if it’s good viz I dive small reef as well. I head out at 90 deg till I get to the bottom at 30m and turn up the loch approx 30 deg keeping to the edge of the slope. After a 2min fin you come to the bottom of the bottom reef, I zig zag up the reef to the top. At the top I continue up from 23m to 17m and come to the bottom of top reef. I stay here as long as my computer or air lets me and then back to the small reef and then out at the big rock.

A more detailed u/w map will soon be on the Scottish dive sites. For such a famous dive site I thought it needed a better map. The last one I gave Alex was not very good...

Think most divers head down to 12-15m turn left and fin to the middle of top reef; missing out the bottom reef completely and few divers even look at small reef at all. If u venture out on the muddy flat at 30m use a compass as it’s easy to get lost come back to the reef on 315 deg.

That's a great map: many thanks!

I wasn't even aware of the small reef!

I took it off and e-mailed it to alex to put on his dive description.

I'll ask Gord to put an amended version of the divesite description on the forum with Ding's new map. I've also pasted Dings comments onto the revised CA divesite description too.

Go to the Scotish divesites, conger alley and tell me if u dive conger alley like the arrows or do you go to 12-15m and turn left and just dive the top reef..

i dive it similar to the arrows, this being the first time i have ever saw a map interpretation of it.
only after a hand full of dives did i discover there was a lower reef, pretty much stumbled over it by accident while looking for a 'mythical' torpedo.

good map :)

why would anyone just dive the top of the reef unless they were with a depth-limited trainee? ...

Lots of divers dont know about the bottom reef, and even more dont know about small reef. How did u find out about the bottom reef?

Gord

you showed me it
but that was years ago when i was barely a lad ...

maybe i take the awesome Eastwood training for granted ... ;)

I was out at Conger Alley today (sunday 29th) with Splashsports. We entered the water, down to about 6m and turned left and finned until we hit the reef (heading slightly deeper as we went until about 10m). Zig-zagged up the reef looking in and around the boulders. On our second dive we hit the small reef purely by accident as our guide managed to go past the exit point and kept going. I've yet to dive the bottom reef, purely as I've not been with a group that can go below 18m.

Tested my new digital camera (bought off ebay, so it's second hand). Sealife ReefMaster 3.3megapixel. Housing leaked a little and as it was my first time with a camera the photos weren't the best. Hopefully the leak will be sorted by a proper clean of the sealing O-ring and some O-ring grease. Pictures can be found at http://markcra.bebo.com

What's your depth rating Scuba-doh can u dive to 30m if so that's the deepest part of bottom reef the top's on 23m. If I remember an 18m rating is PADI open water but I cant remember what advanced open water is

PADI AOW is rated to 30m.

As Stewart correctly stated, I'm rated to 30m. However when I've dived Conger Alley I've never been with a group who share this rating as usually someone of the group is an Open Water. I'm not really complaining, though the dives were rather shallow and not very long (our divemaster had a problem with his reg freeflowing on a full face mask which I can imagine isn't much fun) I did enjoy the dives and it gave me some time to play with my camera/the sealife (oh, I forgot to mention that I found a pipefish on the second dive, it was very well camoflaged in some seaweed which I had brushed aside to look at a crab, would have been an excellent photo opertunity had the housing on my camera not leaked on the first dive).

Come and join Eastwood and do your cross over to Sport Diver:- (a) you'll be able to dive with divers who are all qualified to at least 30m, (b) we are a very sociable bunch and (c) you won't have your dive curtailed by a paid (oops sorry, meant padi) "divemaster" with a free flowing face mask.

You might have to put up with Ding and his tequila slammers but it's a small price to pay.

But of course, had I not had any PADI training, I would not have been entitled to comment on their course/divemasters.

Anyway, the nitrox was a one off, 'we need a nitrox qualification for our free nitrox in the Maldives and we need it now'. If GG hadn't taken 16 months to qualify as a sport diver, we might have had more options.

Sorry gg, I know compass courses are tough. It is orienteering you participate in regularly isn't it?

PADI training is as good as the rest, its just I'm tight I dont like the price they charge. I have a PADI divemaster ticket, Fat Sam did my training about 15 years ago and he was an excellent Instructor.

PS Claire who's dived the deepest you or Gas Guzzeler?

i'd agree with you there, being a 'mongeral' of affiliations myself.
who cares who teaches it, price is little importance if you compare it to the 'FREE' ssac training.
add up your monthly dues, weekly dues, membership fees etc & they will amount to one PADI course.
stay with your club for years & you will most probably find SSAC is more expensive.

at the end of the day, it's the learning that counts.

safe diving.

last question... why has GG dived deeper? is it because he is more experienced?;)

I joined my local SAA (based in Caledonian Uni) to learn to dive. I lasted two weeks, they estimated about 4-6months to get the basic qual and at least six weeks before I'd get near a scuba set. I chucked it and did a PADI course in Cornwall instead for £350, got my cert in five days. I couldn't be bothered with
the length of time, it was a lot of money but worth it to get in the water.

As you well know, it was due to my being tucked up in the B&B all weekend with food poisoning while the rest of them had fun diving the Verona.

I still beat him on the no. of dives and time logged however. For anyone that is thinking about introducing their significant other to diving, while it makes holidays easier (no feeling bad about nipping off for a dive) it gets very competitve!

Did GG also tell you he refused to walk me back to the B&B when I started to feel ill at the pub (after lemonade!). I walked back alone in the dark...........by the time he got back I was introducing myself to the bathroom.

As for missing a dive, not 1, but 4......gutted
