Ding, Really fantastic pics. Is MOD reef the site between Strachur & St Caths where there is a Submarine acoustic range?. Enter from the MOD slip, down to 20m and turn to Strachur to get onto reef?

I decided to go back to MOD Reef again in case the rays were still there and they were
PS does anybody know for sure what type of ray this is (I thought it was a thornback but now I'm not so shure)

Look at the colours on the tail (poss a scorpion fish)
Hi Ding
Is that a shoal of herring? I'm fairly sure the ray is a thornback, look at the thorns along the tail. The last one is a scorpion fish but really distinct patterns.
How many hours you spent underwater this week.... you're just a bloody fish.

Hi Alex I was up at Gortein point on mon getting info for a divesite page and when I was testing the beer in the creggans, (you have to test everything) I got talking to one of the locals and the MOD place is for checking how much noise ships make.
PS MOD Reef is on the divesites now

Me thinks its a black goby (Gobius niger) due to the fact that the first dorsal fin is taller than the second and coz of its colouring. A leopard spotted dude has really conspicous spots!
Whats the best fish and critter book for GB am thinking of getting a ref book and was looking for advice? :D

This is the 2 books i recommend to people
"Photographic Guide to Sea and Shore Life of Britain and North-west Europe " and "Great British Marine Animals" you can get them on amazon (On sale just now!) http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0198507097/sr=8-1/qid=1155235982/ref=sr_1_1/202-4811244-6175024?ie=UTF8&s=gateway and http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0952283158/sr=8-2/qid=1155236016/ref=sr_1_2/202-4811244-6175024?ie=UTF8&s=gateway
The 1st one covers all species you could see pretty much (apart from nudies) and the second one covers less species, but in greater detail and with fantastic photos. I say they are a great pair together!
Enjoy!

Ding,
The link below gives more details on the MOD range (I am not a bleeding heart liberal but am fascinated by what goes on along the shores and under the water of the west coast of scotland, seen lots with sailing)

Hi there, I was wondering which equipment your photographs were taken with?
Thanks. Colzo.:)

My setup is an olympus 8080 in an Ikelite housing with an ikelite strobe TTL
R U thinking of getting a camera Colzo?
Myself and some other Cumbernauld divers were ar mod reef on sunday and we were not disapointed ,as we reached aprox15m we came across the thornback ray lying on the sand bed it was not bothered by us as we all crowded round for a good look, eventually it took off and headed for the deep.We also encountered dogfish and an agitated conger lurking with intent under a rock.
p.s. I found a divers knife at the edge of the slip, just describe it and come and get it.
Hi Ding, I have a Sea and Sea MM2 at the moment with strobe and I get some mixed results. I have a Nikon D70 and an F801s and keep thinking about getting an underwater housing however the thought of taking the D70 below water makes me nervous. I have a coolpix 4300 so I might just get an underwater housing for that. 35mm is just soooooooooo yesterday! C

If u use the d70 get an Ikelite solid bit of kit without remorgaging the house
and u get TTL

These pics taken to-day, great dive 22m max depth, 92min run time. Water temp was noticably colder than last week and viz down to 12m was only 2m, but below that it was the usual 8-10m
Yes I agree, your photos are really good, especially the macros.
Don't forget to stick some of the best ones on a CD at maximum res and I'll print them for you
Hi guys,
Not exactly sure of the full story behind this, but today we had 12 divers heading for mod reef.
The vehicle I was travelling in took a ‘more scenic’ route & arrived about an hour later (don’t ask)
During that time, I got a phone call (with helpful directions) to tell us there was something going on & we could not dive there.
Hmmmmmmm!
On arriving at our new dive site, ST. Catherine’s, we were told of an ogre who lives in a nearby house to mod reef.
He came out ranting & raving like a man gone berserk! Shouting at everyone to get out of the area.
He eventually cast threat of bringing his large agricultural forestry commission vehicle & crushing any car that was left.
The dive party left & went to ST. Catherine’s.
Whilst leaving, it was noted on the back of the ogre’s sweatshirt www.welcometoscotland.com written. If this is our ambassador for Scotland, then its no wonder the tourist trade is in the state it’s in!
it was also suspected he may be the owner of the 3 trucks blocking the lay-by's.
Anyone know the guy?
Yup, that sounds familiar. This guy gave me an earful for parking near his house ... He owns the trucks as you say. He also seems to hate divers!
All you can do is not park near his house. I don't think the road is private ...
I think we might need to send Big Ian back up to see him.... what do you think Ding?
I think we might need to send Big Ian back up to see him.... what do you think Ding?
Ian has a way with people who have a problem, he seams to just sort the problem!!!!
But remember not to park on the grass in front of the houses, if there is no space the owner says to park in her drive, she has spent a lot of time looking after the grass here.
Haven't been to the site before, but plan to go thanks the excellent dive site guide on here (nice one, Ding)!
So, does this unhelpful chap try & prevent diving by filling the available parking spaces with his vehicles? Will be really frustrating if this site is undiveable due to such a small-minded individual.
Which house is it that doesn't mind people parking in the drive? Wouldn't want to park in the wrong one!

As u pass the MOD building sea on the right its the first new house, PS treat the place with care as we have a frend here. Oh and I forgot when on the dive u will find golf balls take them and leave them on the grass in front of the house. The owner practices his shots by seeing how cloce he can get to the bouy.
It covers a large area but:
Sorry, I'm not impressed by the reef.
I'd rate it as OK at the moment (it could be better at other times of the year).
There are not enough large holes for big things to hide in or bits that stick up for things to live in the current.
Saw a few Lions mane jellys
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j62/johnnicolson/MOD%20Reef/P8296955a.jpg
And more of the usual dogfish

A great divesite!!!
Went to MOD reef and met some divers who had printed the info from the local divesites. They said it was a comprehensive guide. Bearing in mind they were from the east coast and had found and dived the site with no problem, the format of the local divesites seams to be right.
You cant park cars at mod reef anymore, the old geezer with the fire engine has put logs all over the place so you cant park. Even the the guy in the mod base said they could not launch thier boat. Dont think what he has done is legal. I will contact Argyle and Bute tomorrow and see if its a private or public road.
Here is a happy hermit crab
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j62/johnnicolson/MOD%20Reef/P8166256.jpg
Just got a new house :D
Has anybody dived MOD reef lately? was wanting to know if the logs were still in front of the slip.....
Tried to dive the above site last Sunday (22-10-06) only to find that some one had put large logs & boulders along the road edge and parked a truck on the slipway.
It is now impossible to park and hence dive .
I wonder if the road is now private?
I wonder if the country side act applies?
Any ideas for getting the logs & boulders removed.
Brian -
I merged your post with a previous discussion of this topic (which i moved from Photography into Dive Sites).
Basically there's a difficult local guy who objects to divers parking near his property. He seems to believe he owns that bit of coast ...

Surely then the boulders could be removed by the council. It must be the same law which says you are not entitled to a parking space outside your house, never mind half the road as well!
The logs that blocked the site have been removed from the front of the MOD building but not from the houses. There is space for 2 cars now.

the boulders have re-appeared at the slip & all along the roadside.
there is no place to park unless you travel to the road end.

in my book the big fish looks like a skate because of the spikes at the bottom of the tail , thornbacks only have the spikes on top

The old geezer refered to earlier, could this be the same old geezer that goes round with a bag reputedly containing a pair of soiled underpants that he claims he has just found in the trees. He then accusses you of shitting in the woods at the side of his house and claims that his dog ate some of the shit and nearly died. I've heard of him appearing with this bag on at least 2 seperate occasions, must be getting a bit smelly by now. I would dearly like to meet him again and get him to open the bag up this time to see what it really contains. Although I suspect I'll just tell him to fook off instead of trying to be sympathetic like last time.

Now THAT's how to win friends and influence people: someone who uses Loch Fyne as a golf range must LOVE divers!
(Thinks, wonder if Kyles Athletic, the shinty team whose park is beside the West Kyle at Tighnabruaich need a ballboy? :))

So: you take off your shoes, trousers and undies to drop one in the woods? Then forget to put your undies back on?
A likely story!

been like that for a long time now im afraid...!!:(
Linda and I went to MoD reef today. We had stopped to look at the site by the side of the road just before the MoD installation. Within minutes the aforementioned individual came towards us quite aggressively ordering us off. We were quite intimidated, particularly by the ratchet sticking out his pocket (no knickers though, soiled or otherwise).
It is exceptionally sad that this site has been, for all intents and purposes, closed to divers. Does anyone know who owns the area infront of the MoD site where the boulders have been placed?
Would it be worth petitioning MoD or the Local Council for access?
Kind regards,
Martin
That sounds terrible!
I wonder if an incident like that should be reported to the police ...? You were not trespassing. Surely this person was simply attacking you "on the street". At the very least, a "breach of the peace"???
What an idiot!

On two Forums I have read about this individual abusing people...
Wrong side of the Country for me, but, have we established the status of the Road in question?...if it is not a private road i suggest we get a trip organised and go up in force to dive it, when he arrives and starts his crap call the Police and let them sort it out...maybe a photographer and send it to the local rag...i did hear something about him working or doing work for the Foresty Commision...is that correct? I have a few high level contacts in that organisation...if it is a private road it doesnt stop you accessing it to Dive the site...a long walk but might upset him.....
I like the cut of your jib. I think a "well within our rights" dive should be arranged.
When are you free? Mid week dive next week maybe?
