Is there any manuals on decompression diving?
Dived on twins for the first time today and know that in the future deco will be an element in my diving.
Being Padi trained I know nothing about deco diving and would like to get as much info as possible for an upcomming trip to Scapa.

Speak to Ian of Northern Technical and do a course, you don't want to start this type of diving based on what you've read in a book. Ian's courses are very good and at a fair price.

My club are going to do some training that includes I believe deco before our Scapa trip. It is just that I would like to be a little clued up prior to that.
If I enjoy Scapa which everyone tells me is a cert then I would like to do a proper course on deco.

It's not just Deco you need to learn, if your diving twins you need to learn how to set them up and how to do shut down drills. Are they manifolded with an isolation valve ?

Ian,

Is your club Scotsac or BSAC?

I understand a technical instructor called Mark Powell based in the midlands has written a really good book that a lot of divers recomend. (see link below). I keep meaning to get it.

http://http://www.dive-tech.co.uk/deco%20for%20divers.htm

I would echo what the other postors suggest about a course, however your training agency / branch can probably organise a course such as the BSAC Advanced Nitrox course as an alternative to a commercialy run course.

Cheers,

Gareth.

Technical Diving, From The Bottom Up, by Kevin Gurr.
a preview of the book can be viewed here (http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=K2BjqY8W9iEC&dq=kevin+gurr+from+the+bottom+up&printsec=frontcover&source=bn&hl=en&ei=lUq-Sar0GIHE-Ab1nOz8BA&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=4&ct=result#PPA125,M1)
pretty much everything you will need to know about tech diving apart from the obvious training.

Both Gurr's (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Technical-Diving-Bottom-Kevin-Gurr/dp/1904381200/ref=wl_it_dp?ie=UTF8&coliid=I1YYP3XTK6TEJC&colid=8JW4BSWZ2SFX) and Powell's (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1905492073/ref=s9_wsim_c5_p14_i1?ie=UTF8&coliid=I13OF006LZRKXY&colid=8JW4BSWZ2SFX&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-1&pf_rd_r=18DQWVJY9H58ZAVAM6CP&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=463374953&pf_rd_i=468294) books are on my Amazon wish-list and have excellent reviews there. Personally, I find most training agencies manuals to be a little lacking - I enjoy reading and appreciate the extra detail I get from a good writer with loads of experience.

If you're a BSAC diver, you may want to talk to No Bubbles - he recently started a thread about BSAC technical diving training here (http://www.congeralley.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3657). Otherwise, it's hard to beat the feedback Northern Technical is getting from CA members...

ITDA is an Approved training Agency by BSAC. I can provide a Manual for a cost. In regards to a good tekkie read I would recommend John Lippmann Deeper into diving, It goe's quite deeply into deco theory.
Hope this helps

Another vote for Marl Powell's "Deco for Divers". I just finished reading it and have to say that it was both informative and fasinating in equal measures. It is regarded as one of the best books covering all aspects of deco from theory to the teachings of all the agencies so gives a good all round overview of everything. Like you, I intend taking a course in deco (which is why I bought the book) but I have already been diving twins for some time, have received some good training from guys in my group and am now practising with a stage prior to taking a formal course.

Good luck and remember - it's all about the instructor, not the course or the agency so take your time, get some advice and chose very carefully! Also do all you can to be ready for a course before hand. There is no point trying to do deco skills with stages etc if you are not familiar and happy doing routine twinset operations such as shut down drills, OOA practising and "bagging off" all whilst maintaining good bouyancy (this is why I am still practising!!!).

Cheers
Gar

Deco for divers.
Thanks for all the book suggestions. I must stress it is purely for background reading at the moment.
