Should we bring stages too or just twinsets?

Did the 1st Skills dive for the Deco Nitrox course with Northern Technical on Saturday. It's been a very good course so far (Still lots to do as I have Tech Nitrox and Trimix MOD1 booked with Ian) but the diving parts of any course are always the best.

Day started off with Twinset and Stage Configuration Workshop, this was useful with some good ideas and reasoning on what works and what could cause problems. Hoses should not have any tight bends, Long Hose is a MUST if your diving a twinset and Back Up Reg needs to be on a necklace so it can be stowed under your chin as you will donate the reg in your mouth to an OOA Diver.

Stage set up, is all about keeping it neat and easy to use underwater i.e. nice and easy to deploy reg, nice and easy to remove and replace stage. Ian does rip into your kit but all with good intention and he does back up everything with a reason for changing it.

We then moved onto the skills dive. Prior to entering the water Ian and Loudy gave us a run down of what would be happening, this being Ian demonstrating the skill, Loudy demonstrating the skill and then us doing the skill. All hand signals that were going to be used where all demonstrated just incase any of us had forgot them.

1st Skill - Lost mask simulation and replacement with back up mask - Bastard! was not expecting this! - This was done at 6m and at least the water was not as cold as Powmill (3 degs) where I had tried this last weekend. So mask off, place mask down to where your spare mask would be, hold for 5 seconds, and back up and replace mask. Done, with plenty of snot to blow out of the mask !

2nd Skill - Shut Down Drill - Isolate Manifold. Remove primary reg and replace with back up reg, shut down and re open primary valve, purge main reg and replace main reg to mouth, shutdown and re open back up valve and purge back up reg, open isolation manifold.

3rd Skill - Remove and hand off stage, take back stage and re-connect - Easy if you can reach everything and use nice big bolt snaps, good skill to practice as you do need to dump a tiny bit off gas to compensate for a steel stage, but not as much as you might think. This skill is done while hovering and is easier to do while hovering as the boltsnaps are easier to get to. So unclip bottom bolt snap, unclip top bolt snap, pass stage to right hand and hold inflator hose in left, pass off stage to your buddy and dump a little air to keep hovering in same position. Take back stage, add a little air, maintaing hover and re clip stage, top clip first and then bottom.

4th Skill - OOA Diver pass off long hose - Ian want's this done the PADI way, where the OOA Diver takes the reg from your mouth and you then switch to your backup. We did this a few times throughout the dive , with Ian swimming up, giving OOA signal and taking your reg.

So really good skills dive and worth doing all these skills on a regular basis, even just reaching for your valves now and again during the dive helps.

Still lots more to do. but a good day out.

Oh saw 2 dog fish !

Sounds like a good day was had.

Does this mean that you managed to convince Yogi that he needs a long hose? :D

There is light at the end of my busy weekend tunnel. It will be good to get some regular dives with you chaps soon. :)

Not fully convinced yet but getting there.;) No way I'm wrapping long hoses round my neck though. If I go for the longhose, it will be bungeed to the RH tank.

Liked a lot of what Ian told us but still making my own mind up on the configuration that suits me best.:p
Everything will have to be reconsidered when I become an arse scratcher anyway.:D

At the end of the day if it work's for you go for it.

In Technical diving and Recreational diving never......never be reliant on a buddy, 15 years in diving has told me this.;)

All the guys out yesterday keep practising these skills

Shutdown Drill

Close Manifold
Switch from primary to secondary regulator
Close then re-open primary tank
Switch from secondary to primary regulator
Close then re-open secondary tank
Open Manifold

Long hose breathing

Remove and replace stage

Deploy SMB under 60 seconds from a depth of 12 mtrs

Keep ya busy cheers

Ian

I'm doing a Trimix course with Northern Technical at the moment and really meant to post on here about how professional and helpful Ian is.

Ian trimmed my kit a bit and it really is simple and easy to follow. I was unsure about the long hose round my neck at first but really works well once deployed. Practising the shutdowns is vital as well. The week before I was on U74 and at 38M my reg went into freeflow (4oC) I shut down my manifold but couldn't quite reach my valve.(I can now!) My buddy went to shut down the valve but all he could see was a trail of black hoses leading back to the 1st stages! Anyhow with a trimmed kit and two different coloured hoses and all of us diving with the same kit configuration things are a lot easier now. Having said that it works for us but something different might work for another buddy team.

Anyway off to practise my shut down drills for the next session.....
