View Full Version : Who's seen a John Dory, and where?
These seem to be pretty rare, but wondering if it's more that they're rarely seen by divers,as opposed to actually being rare.
I saw a huge one at Stallion Rock in 32m at the bottom of the wall, amazing sight.
Then 2 years ago I was up at Kinlochbervie for a week on the Peregrine and I saw one on a boulder slop on the south end of Handa Island, the day after saw 2 together in Loch Inchard just outside KLB harbour, in around 20m swimming above a creel

Never seen one in Scotland. Saw one in Gozo in Dec 2000 when I was still learning and followed it for about 5 minutes. Thought, "Cool as F***!"
Been lucky enough to see 1 under the cliffs on the May Isle and photographed it, the first one was in Malta and seemed huge

I seen one at Kenmore Point in August 2005.
It was in the kelp bay at about 7m and the water temperature was 12oC if that has any bearing on it being there.
Looked stunning as the sun beamed through the water around it.
Only one I've seen was on a night dive in Xlendi Bay, Gozo a couple of years ago. Never seen any in Loch Fyne or anywhere else in Scotland for that matter.
Has anyone posted their sightings with location and dates to the Marlin website (http://www.marlin.ac.uk/rml/)?
I would think the data would be a valuable addition to the record.

There you go .....John Dory at the bottom of the Slates last November.
Saw one off Chisel Beach Dorset when I was training a few years ago and one in New Zealand but never seen one when i've had a camera in my hand. Does look as though you have a few more 'up north'.
Cool.
By The Slates do I take it you mean Lochside Cottages in Loch Leven near Ballachulish? I've dived that site loads, never seen one but will keep my eyes peeled :)
Photographed one around 4 years ago at Quarry Point (Bistro) in 10M. I always thought they were deep dwelling fish. Will look for the photo

We were diving at Dundonnel last year and the skipper of the rebecca Ann told us there'd been regular sightings on Conger Stack in Little Loch Broom at the time. Also on a trip to lochaline in the summer 2 of our group found 2 John Dorys at Ardmore Point.
