The worrying thing about this is that this happened on the next beach along from where my kids and I surf!

:eek::eek::eek:
on a more interesting note, more children are killed by dogs in the UK every year, than people killed by sharks in Australia..

We need to start industrial fishing for dogs!
There's probably more people killed by cars within a couple of miles of my house each year than are reported killed by sharks worldwide each year.

Not one for tarring the sharks with the old "maneater" tag but i do think these kind of statistics prove nothing. you just have to look at how often people are in contact with dogs and don't get bitten never mind killed and same for being knocked down by cars. What they dont report is that the number of people coming into contact with these sharks is actually very low so inevitably the number of shark attacks will be much much less than most other events that result in the injury or death of a human. I think if it were possible to say how many people were in the immediate area where the shark was at the time, doing what it does best (looking for food) against the number of attacks on humans, i reckon that as a percentage then that might be rather high! thats not to say that a shark will or has attacked every human it has seen i just think that the statistics that we are given do not give a true representation of the actual truth! at the end of the day it is tragic and i do feel for the victims families etc... but the sharks are only doing what they do naturally and in their own environment not ours! To them we are probably just junk food compared to the seals etc they normally eat, but if you were a shark and you were hungry i reckon it would cross your mind to try something new :D It is more about us being in the wrong place at the wrong time, than the sharks deliberately hunting us down.
