Can anyone recommend a camcorder for underwater use and housing? I have been looking at Sony camcorders and Ikelite housing but don't really have a clue what sort of spec/features I should be looking for.

Any suggestions?

do you intend on using it in scotland or tropical waters? or both?
i have a birchley housing, pretty light in weight, ok for traveling.
birchley housings cover a vast range of cameras so should you wish to upgrade, not a problem.
video lights are required for scotland, hardly worth going any deeper than a snorkle without them. very expensive, i have yet to own a set. i have a make-shift for now.
shooting in blue (egypt) water?, get a blue water filter(red amber), in the Med. use magenta for green water, i learned this the hard way, you will need them.
you will be best to use a wide angle lense or a fish eye lense.
fish eye is best when shooting underwater (i have one of these) as they take away any straight lines. no straight lines in nature!
hope this confuses you,,, erm i mean helps you.

Ikelite make top quality merchandise, however as i have never used any i cannot comment.
'Gates' are probably the market leaders, but no use for traveling as their housings are cast & prices through the roof.

Thanks for the info.

I will be using the camcorder abroad mainly - we're booked for the caribbean and malta next year. Might play around with it in Scottish waters but not a lot.
