Lineus longissimus (Gunnerus)
Body can be extremely long; specimens of 10-15m are not uncommon and over 30m has been recorded. Young specimens are smaller. The width of the body may be 1-10mm depending upon the degree of contraction. The colour ranges from a dark olive brown or rich chocolate brown in smaller examples to dark blackish-brown or purplish-black in larger individuals. The beating of the epidermal cilia often causes a purplish iridescence. The body map appear to be longitudinally streaked with pale lines, especially on the anterior dorsal surface. Ventrally the colour may be slightly paler than the dorsal. The head is rather rectangular in shape, often appearing slightly notched at its pale tip, and bears 10-40 deep-set and inconspicuous small reddish-brown or black eyes on each side.
