View Full Version : Sound of Mull 2007

Gord

I want to organise a Conger Alley long weekend to the Sound of Mull some time next year. I'm thinking a 3-day weekend. Maybe based in Lochaline, maybe Tobermory.

The first thing to figure out is how many are potentially up for it.

So, if you're keen, add you name to this thread!

Cheers!

I'm sure that Alan and I would be interested if dates were right. Lochaline would be a good base. We could do shoredive from hotel/pier as well as boat diving.

The jump off the hotel pier is awesome and a good night dive. Just hang on to your masks. Mine fell off when i hit the water and thankfully got caught on my buddy's fin, otherwise it would have sunk to 90m never to be seen again. Lochaline Hotel and the Bumkhouse are both good places to stay. :D

Gord, could I suggest that you avoid the following dates as they are the school holidays:

Fri 30th March to Mon 16th April 2007
Fri 25th and Mon 28th May 2007
Thurs 28th June to Tues 28th August 2007

I would also prefer that the 3 days started on Thursday night so I would be back at work on Monday morning.

What about one of the following dates:

Fri 11th to Sun13th May
Fri 18th to Sun 20th May
Fri 1st to Sun 3rd June

How about the first weekend in May? It's a bank holiday weekend which means no need to take time off - I'm a bit short on holidays next year!

I think the 1st weekend of May (without looking at a calender) clashes with the trip to Scarpa 5th to 12th May which Fiona (bo'ness club) has organised and has offered to open up to this forum on the 1st November. At the moment i know she has 5 possibly 6 out of 12 places filled, so there should be places available.

First May bank holiday?

Could be Friday 4th - Monday 7th, or variations thereon to suit.

Gord, if we're staying in Tobermoray or Lochaline then people either joining late or leaving early would be problematic. I assume you plan to hire MV Diving Belle, or Brendan, or Peregrine etc. It doesn't make sense to be chugging up & down the sound to Oban to pick up or drop off stragglers. Better to pick a single date to join the boat and be dropped off back in Oban. That is unless you have so many people that you can fill several boats.

It would definitely be a fixed schedule. I meant that we could discuss before setting it in stone so that, for example, you were able to come ...

So what i propose is Saturday 6th - Monday 7th May (Monday is a bank holiday). Staying in Tobermory. I'll try to book the Swift ...

Could you do these dates?

I'm happy with those dates but I'd definitely prefer staying in Tobermory. I don't think I could cope with two nights in Lochaline. Tobermory is like Las Vegas by comparison :)

This seems like an excellent plan, Gord! :)

We'd be happy wherever it's based. Haven't stayed in Tobermory, but it seems to have more variety of night life on offer (plus we wouldn't have to worry about overworking the Lochaline Hotel restaurant staff ;)). On the other hand, the shore diving opporchancities in Lochaline are attractive. Although if we're getting 3 days of boat diving, I dare say we could fit in some scenic wall dives... Calve Island... Bo Fascadale...

Ok guys, i need some help here.

I've provisionally booked (awaiting pricing and confirmation) the Gemini Storm as a liveaboard to be based in Tobermory.

Dates:
Pick-up Saturday morning the 5th May, Oban; diving 5th/6th/7th of May in Sound / Coll / Fascadale; return to Oban evening of Monday 7th May.

The Storm takes 10 divers, so i've put together the following list based on registered strong interest:

1. Gordon (me)
2. Helen (the mrs)
3. Charlie Mcgurk
4. Sarah (mrs mcgurk)
5. John (Ding)
6. Marion (Mermaid)
7. Claire
8. Andy (guzzler)
9. Alex Maclennan
10. Alan (Alex's buddy).

Let me know if you're on this list and the dates don't work for you.

Also, the others who have expressed interest and who are not on the list, could one of you take on teh task of finding a hardboat out of Tobe. There's no reason why we can't have double this number and get together in the mishnish in the evenings to compare stories.

Cheers

Balls up already! I should have learnt my lesson about trying to organise trips this year. Cancel all of the above. Helen can't make the first bank holiday weekend because she has exams, and I don't want to leave her here on her own feeling all glum and studying.

So I'll try to book Lochaline for hte last weekend in May.

I'll get back to this next week.

Sorry for the feckin around.

Are you still thinking about booking the liveaboard? I like the idea of that - out of bed, dive, snooze, dive etc.

This post was by me, not gas guzzler...................hey guzzler, next time you use my laptop on conger alley make sure you log yourself back out afterwards.

Hmmm, mind you, considering his performance last week in the red sea I think dive, snooze, dive, snooze is particularly apt....

How about the last weekend in May: the 26-28th?

It might be a good idea to be based in Lochaline dive centre, given the large number of people. Also that means we could get a load of extra diving in off the pier, etc.

Maybe we should book the full capacity of the dive centre and ask them to organise the boats ...

Are you thinking of getting rid of Gord for the trip the first weekend in May and filling his and Helen's place? Shameful :o but not a bad idea as I'd prefer to be away then than on the last weekend.

I would really like to do a liveaboard in this country - diving daily out of Lochaline means Sound of Mull would be really good. (and Gordon, I would still like to be on your trip at the end of May).

I was actually wondering about taking advantage of the liveaboard and going slightly further afield - perhaps Coll and Tiree, maybe Garvellachs too, but including the Sound of Mull too, for the first and last dives or something. Sort of a round Mull thing or something - just an idea that's all. I really want to do the Breda as well.

Would anyone else be interested in this?

What about a livaboard doing Scapa I'v done it now 5 times and am going back in 3 weeks. Its a great weeks diving....;)

charlie
17-10-06, 17:02
Although a liveaboard would be very attractive, so would 3 days diving from Lochaline IMHO. If we go on the Brendan or Peregrine (http://www.lochaline-boats.co.uk/), it would be perfectly feasible to dive in different locations each day: they'll readily go outside the Sound (weather permitting) to Bo Fascadale, Labrador, Tapti, Garvellachs, Breda etc. Plus Lochaline could accommodate more divers than one liveaboard and we would get the chance to squeeze in additional shore dives off the pier for those who can't get enough.

To be honest, I'd be happy whatever set up is best for people: I'm just desperate to get back there!

I have provisionally booked the Gemini Storm for 5-7th May 2007 - the weekend Gordon had it booked.

Plan is to dive Coll & Tiree, Bo Fascadale and Sound of Mull etc. Cost is £225 per person, which includes 3 days diving, accommodation, air fills, and I think all meals, but I have to confirm that.

As 10 people were provisionally booked on Gordon's trip, I have offered the places to these people first. However, I have 4 places left. I know there were others interested in the trip; let me know if you still are.

Just 3 spaces left now for this trip - should be an excellent dive trip - wrecks around Coll and Tiree are meant to be especially good.

Anyone else interested?
