I recieved the latest copy of the undersea journal from padi this morning and in it they announced a new diver certification, open water diver - controlled environment

Basically you can be certed to dive in pools/aquariums etc but are not allowed to dive unsupervised in open water, what's next controlled environment AOW/rescue diver

ha ha ha - talk about dumbing down a diving qualification! What use is this? It's not as if OW is particularly challenging. Mind you, there's that 35m deep swimming pool in Belgium that's used for diver training - does that count as a controlled environment?

Probably not - bet you it's not allowed to be any deeper than 2m.

It doesn't mention depth limit but i assume it'll be 18M like OW,so if you want to dive nemo33 in Belgium you'll need your controlled environment - deep speciality

possibly,they class controlled water as

"a site that does not have sufficent unpredictable natural environmental variables to be considered an open water site.Purpose bulit dive sites, aquariums, aqua parks, large aquatic facilites fit this descripion."

seen this doing the rounds a couple of months back on other websites. Basically, it's for confined water sites like nemo as mentioned. The idea is that in the future we are likely to see a proliferation of sites such as nemo in the same way that you have snow domes such as the one in braehead for skiing and snow boarding.

I can undertstand folk knocking it and Im not sure of my opinion but i think the idea is that there are a lot of folk who want to dive in 'perfect' conditions and maybe are not interested in diving in what can be cold and dark waters. I can see that some folk might view this as 'dumbing down' diving but if it makes the sport more accesible to those for whom diving in uk waters doesnt suit then I think that's a good thing.

i guess it would suit people who worl there and give a qualification relavent to the job rather than having to pay the full amount for a qualification your not going to use if your not interested.

Think ill give it a miss myself :D:D

Maybe there's a context to this? Could it be something for teenagers who want to start training but are still too young to be in OW? Personally I dunno, but that seems like an obvious idea ...

I thought they plumbed new depths last year when they announced the DSMB speciality.
Soon to be followed by the Torch Speciality and the Fins speciality!!
Amazing that you can be an "Advanced OW diver and still need a course on sending up a blob!

DSW doesnt count as a benign enviroment because it contains large marine animals. you cant even go in there with a DM, You need a AI or above to escort you which is daft. PADI Dms were able to do tours there but PADI changed all that when I was instructing there.

you can still go in a dive team as a dm to do all the tank maintenence there but just arent allowed to take paying customers in. hse scuba isnt even allowed unless the have their PADI AI and DSD cert aswell. PADI sure know how to make the pennies eh

needless to say, i wasnt good enough to clean their windows or scoop out shark crap.
so glad i have progressed on to sewage pipes now..:D:o:D:D

I got my little sister in the pool to do a bubblemaker course and she loved it, its a great idea as kids at that age have so much confidence in the water...now shes already bought her fins and mask to do her O/W as soon as shes old enough :D:D:D

160 quid for a dive? that's the best part of half the cost of a week b and b with flights in sharm... where you can dive with sharks!!

It's only £65 if your qualified but you can get it down to £55 if there are 12 of you (10 plus 2 free spaces).

£25 to take a camera in though! Mind you they didn't say anything when we whipped ours out when I did my first ever dive in there.

that doesnt sound half as bad! Pretty damn good deal if you have a group of you and handy as well if you canna get away to shark dive overseas.

I did it last year - Charlie organised it. It's got up since then but we paid £39 each, and they didn't say anything when I took my video camera in. It was fun, definitely worth doing once.
