Three to four times as many sharks are killed for their fins as are reported in the official figures. Researchers looking at trade in shark fins used genetic identification to estimate by species the number of globally traded shark fins. The results are the first fishery-independent estimate of the scale of shark catches worldwide. If the estimates are correct for one of the most commonly traded species, the blue shark, then the nubers being caught are very close to, and may even exceed, the maximum sustainable levels.

When I was on holiday a group of divers were in a restaurant and after looking at the menu all stood up and left saying they would not eat in a place that sold shark finns. I have always wanted to do that, to make the point but have not come across a place that sells shark finn yet. I suppose It will take a lot of people to change these restaurants menus. On saying that as I remember one of the big supermarkets stopped selling shark products because of people pressure...
