Divers

Dive for Debris with Aquatron Dive Centre on International Cleanup Day - Sept 21st 2008. We need divers and volunteers to help remove underwater and shoreline debris from the A-frames to 29 steps - and join us in an end of Summer BBQ, social celebration of diving and our certifications and give something back to our marine environment at the same time.

Divers are the guardians of our underwater environments - this event is the largest single day volunteer event on behalf of our underwater environment. Literally thousands of volunteers participate across the globe.

Aquatron is organizing this local cleanup in partnership with the Project AWARE Foundation, and all profits from the day will be donated to the Project AWARE foundation.

Divers (with entry level qualifications and above) and shoreline volunteers of all ages can participate. Bring your friends and family to help make clean waters a reality. Special Kids activities are planned for the children so bring them along too.

The event will be our chance to give something back. Costs to take part are drastically reduced from usual rates...(not for profit but all proceeds will to to project AWARE)

Non-divers and those bringing all their own kit (including tanks and weights) £5

Divers (1 dive) BBQ / tank + weights hire £15

Diver - full kit hire + BBQ £35

Sign up (and payment) for those wishing to dive must be completed by Friday 19th Sept 2008. Sign up now by replying to this post, email aware@aquatron.co.uk, and or come into the shop and see us.

Competitions are planned for most unusual piece of rubbish collected, largest weight of rubbish collected, most cigarette butts collected, and best drawing of the event by an under 18.

BBQ will be a chance for everyone to socialise, come back and meet the people from your courses in 2007/8, chat to local marine societies and see how you can continue your diving. Burgers & rolls provided - bring drinks and salads and anything else you like.

Please feel free to forward this information to friends and family who may be ready to jump in their drysuits, pull on their gloves and make a dive for debris! or just want to help our on shore, especially other local dive clubs you might belong to.

Finally on Saturday 20th Sept 2008, we will run two project AWARE courses (£65 for beach clean up participants including certification and materials, 80 for non-participants) - a PADI specialty open to all divers and non-divers (you don't have to have any qualifications) to learn about our aquatic environment and of course the local marine life.

Thanks for your time.

Chris

Hi Chris, sounds like a good day and a good cause. :) I don't want to be a pedant but the date you gave as a deadline for sign-up is after the date of the event...unless I've misunderstood something? I wouldn't want people to be dissapointed.

Wow that is good from Suunto Chris, I would love to go and usually do a beach clean up each year at Crammond, but I am at St Abbs that weekend.
All the best with it, looking forward to reading about it on here and seeing the pictures.

Hi hope this isnt too late ... am unable to make tomorrow however we (Inverclyde SAC) would like to donate 2 boat dives from the club rib as a raffle prize. The sites would of course depend upon the qualifications of the winners.

Hope this is of some use. If interested drop me an email at: davewarner970@msn.com or drop me a pm

Thanks to all those who attended the Beach Clean-Up on Sunday at Finnart. It was a massive success and the BBQ went down very well :D We are in the process of collecting all the data from the day and sorting through the photos to censor them! The weather certainly helped and the viz at both A Frame and 29 Steps was 6-8m which helped add to the great atmosphere on the day.

Watch this space for more info!

The beach clean up was deff a great day. I know several people put in a huge effort into making it so successful, not least of which Helen whose organisational skills went a long way to making it the success it was.

It was great to see so many folk out to support the day including many non divers.
