I was on rebreatherworld and saw this

Has anybody seen a homemade rebreather? I saw a guy at Finnart a few years ago, and it seamed to work

I think that was probably me. Were you diving a box of doom then? I remember talking to a YBOD diver there. I was building it for a MSc I was doing.

It was a piece of crap, I binned it fairly soonish. I started from scratch after that and built this:

It worked fairly well. I did a fair bit of diving on it, including a 60m dive at the NDC in Chepstow. This was cave diving in France on it:

I then went on to make a couple of sidemount rebreathers. One was contained in a tackle sack so I could carry it through caves. Spot which one:

I then had the guys who make the EDO-04 semi-closed RB build a modified version for me that I could use fully closed. I dived it with a small twinset (pair of 7's) which were both diluent and bailout. The rebreather then clipped on at the side like a stage. I carried another stage of O2 to drive it. The idea was that I could dive a normal twinset setup with the rebreather as an add on.

In the end I sold most of my rebreathers (or rather just the bits) and bought a KISS. I've still got a small oxygen rebreather made out of a Draeger Ray but I haven't used it in a while.

Cheers,

Stuart

man,

That is legendary.

I've read stories, and seen pictures of loonies like you before and thought smugly to myself, surely these people can't be serious, surely they must all be dead. Entrusting their lives to some bits of drainage pipe and bits of this and a couple of pieces of that.

But here you are.. alive and well, and with photos to prove it!!!

It all just goes to prove. In order to want to dive, there has to be something fundamentally wrong with the way your brain works!!!

Legend!!!

Live the dream.

How many other guys out there have made or modified any bits of dive kit ?
