Alex, I suppose the nearest pub would probably be in Kincardine, but I haven't tried any. I can however recommend a few in Falkirk, but that would be a wee bit out the way for you Glasgow people.

Ding, I know there are Sticklebacks in it, I don't know if there are anything any bigger, I didn't see anything, but I don't think this is what you meant thou. Maybe Charlie or someone else who has dived here may have came accross anything bigger.
A good we site and a good place to chill out after a day at work.
Thanks,

Firstly, you can access the site with a regular car (wouldn't do it with a brand new shiny car though!)...

Not much in there except for a caravan and some dumped cars (prizes for guessing the diver who braved sticking his head in a very unstable caravan - and it is not me!)

Please excuse my complete lack of fish knowledge!!
There is a small shoal of small fish (identified by Airmonster as Sticklebacks) that I have seen hanging around but no sign of anything bigger.
I think someone should arrange a mass dive meet at the site nearer the end of the year (when viz is at it's best). Any volunteers?

Great idea craig kinda like the solstice dive but in october we could call it the octoberfest.... Ye ha another party....and we could dive as well...
PS craig excellent pictures....
PPS Anybody thought about putting some fish in here...
Brilliant site guide, Colin.
You just pipped me to the post as I was in the process of making one! ;)
As far as the life goes in there, there are the previously mentioned sticklebacks (saw a big shoal of them under a rock there the other night). Also on a night dive we saw a big trout (brown, I think). Was getting my camera ready when my over zealous buddy chased it away never to be seen again (trout not buddy)
I'd put together a wee experiment at an underwater map which I might as well post here:
http://staff.stir.ac.uk/charles.mcgurk/diving/powmill_quarry.jpg
We tend to do a stride entry from a rocky outcrop a little further to the south than where Colin marked on his map (craigdiver & mr green recommended this spot: it's where Craig's red car is parked in his photo above). Upon submerging at that point, there's what I can only call a 'reef of car wrecks' all piled along that side of the quarry. We headed straight across (via playing with a van tyre by sending it up to the surface (childish but fun) to find a rather nice Morris Minor on the opposite side. Then tracked to the left via a toilet seat (who places these sorts of things in dive sites?) to find the obligatory caravan which is perched rather precariously. Continuing anticlockwise will find Opel Kadett on its roof (which mysteriously still bears the inscription "charlie is a joke") which signals the start of the car reef. There are various other car wrecks in there that I've not marked on the map. As Colin stated, we exit via the shallows to the north after passing through some reeds.
Think I'll be going for a dip there later in the week: I think it's great fun (and only 20 min from chez moi)!
multimap of lay-by (http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?local=h&scale=25000&title=Powmill%20Quarry%20lay-by&lon=-3.603&lat=56.161&icon=x)
The three of you should get together and use the pics, maps and descriptions
to make a great guide. Revision 1
all good contributions.
i intend to use this guide to dive there mid week, thursday perhaps.
i will let you know how easy to use the guide is.
My work is presently based from Kinross, and this quarry is actually part of my working area... several weeks ago (I believe there were divers present right/during this happened from what I've been told, but I was in the Red Sea at the time!) apparently there were young idiots with guns &/or knives trying to scare other folk (this was folk from Fife & Central Scotland, I'm not sure who was trying to scare each other, but from all accounts the divers were left unmolested!)
Anyway, if you are coming from GLA side of the country (as most of you seem to) if you travel about 1 mile more east along the A977 Kinross to Kincardine Road you'll come to lots of drinking inlets if you wanted to refresh before the track home.
Just my tuppenceworth!
Well done nici I fancy a dive here but will wait till the weather gets beter and
would u belive it I'v got a head cold...
Does that mean you weren't diving today?
For once?

Yep no diving today I'm like a walking flu misery. I got a new strobe cable for my camera and cant dive. Its been 4 days since my last dive, got the shakes Maybe go with stewart if I'm invited to the quarry. Cold permitting....
I know this place "above" water like the back of my hand... Never dived it... Are you free to dive midweek perchance? With a PADI AOW or BSAC Sports Diver (who's bounacy can be a little unreliable after 20 wetsuit Red Sea dives and just getting to grips with Dry Suit Diving?!)

Sounds good to me what about thursday give me a chance to get rid of this cold....
There seems to be a slight time warp between what's read on this site and the answers posted...
Are you still about for me to email you "personally" or call?
I'd be up for Powmill Quarry BIG time, because, well, just because, but I've not dived it before and you might prefer to dive it with someone who already had, though by the (most excellent) breifing provided it probably won't make too much of a difference! :)

Hi Ding,
Got your email about changing dive from Thursday to Friday, but thinking about it, I'm going to be really rather tired working Night Shift :( Some folk appear to have dived it several times, so it might be worth doing more than once, in which case if you do it this Friday with Craig & Stewart, perhaps you could do it again a week on Wednesday (4th October) when I am not working?
What do you think?

Yeah, sounds like a good idea.
Would also be good to include craig's great pictures. I love the aerial one: did you take it from your plane or airship, craig? ;)
To be honest, my guide still needed a bit of work on it. So now that the others have done it, I don't have to bother... sweet! I also managed to stuff up the parking place photos & GPS co-ordinates that I took by parking in the wrong lay-by last week: what a muppet!

Did u guys get a dive in the quarry... Jeolous... I still cant dive with this cold. I'm hoping to be ok for The dive at conger alley on sun...:(
Yeah, Airmonster & I had a nice dive in the quarry last night. Raining as usual but lovely down beneath. He managed to get his car up to the site. My car didn't make it on to the access road due to excessive mud (wheel-spinning), so I had to walk up. Some other guys from our club enjoyed themselves also (good place to check out new kit as Colin stated).

Managed a nice wee bimble. Access to the site was made a lot easier by managing to get the car up. I was hoping to get some better underwater photo's but my camera is playing up. I'll have to send it away to be looked at, more bloody expense. However, on the plus side, my drysuit is now a "dry" drysuit.:D.
Nice to have a dive and not have a long drive home!
/Colin.
I think that one of our guys lost the rubber boot of a 12L cylinder , so if anyone finds one around the site, please let me know. :p
Was there any fish, creatures, things to take pictures of...? :)There are lots of small fish and snails in there but that's about it. Saw one stickleback who was heavily infested with the white spot parasite (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis). Poor we thing was looking very lacklustre, exhibiting flared opercula and respiratory distress. :(
Have only seen a trout once. As the quarry has not been stocked with fish (as far as I know), it's nothing like Capernwray, Ding. Hope you'll not be disappointed. It does have loads of car wrecks though! ;)

Disapointed yes I want to see sturgon Trout perch the odd wreck, u know a helicopter or plane. och well supose I'l have to make do with a fusty stickleback and a snail or two.....
just back after trying out powmill quarry.
one of the most abundant wreck dives i have been on & really good viz!!:D
i used the site guide to get there, pretty accurate to say the least.
although we did see another 2 places which looked like the entrance just past the real entrance, a slight overshoot!:o
the drive up was an experience better had in a 4x4 than any car, fortunatly we had a 4x4 but it was still a bit of work after the heavy rain, the mud was deep.
the local wild life consisted of mainly stickleback, although on my safety stop i did break away following a perch, i'd estimate it to be around the 2lb mark; didnt see any trout.
i did fullfil one of my 'crazier' lifes ambitions tonight.
to ride a bike under the water, toyed with this idea a few times, only to be put off by the expense. fortunatly powmill already supplies underwater bikes, lucky me!
i even popped the odd wheely:D
a good place to empty some half cylinders, a good place to do training & plenty to look at.
Ah... the bike... I'd forgotten about that until you mentioned it (must be the nitrogen narcosis ;)). Yeah, my buddy Gus brought that up to the surface & actually had a good 10 min of riding on it before he punctured a tyre. We were trying to persuade him to ride it over the edge into the water but he chickened out & just threw it back in.

Stuart,
Glad you enjoyed the dive. There may be another few places where you could access the site from the road, I haven't really looked. I use the first one you can get through as it is the closest to the track up, but it is getting a bit muddy. Next time I'm up, I'll have a look a bit further along the road to see if there is any other access.
Defiantly a lot easier with a 4x4. Biggest problem is getting off the main road on to the waste ground. Then just follow the track up (albeit slowly).
Vis is usually quite good unless you have the misfortune of diving after others have been in the water. Because there is not much fresh water coming in, the water takes a long time to settle.
The dive I had with Charlie on Wednesday was my first dive here for 21 months, but I really must try to do it a bit more regularly.
Not sure I would drive 1½ to 2 hours to dive it, but not a bad wee site if you are in the area.
Defiantly different! and I've been told different is good, so you can make your own conclusions.:D
/Colin.

Stewart r u sure it was a perch ??????? ;)
charlie.
i saw 2 bikes, one silver, looked in mint condition, i assume this was the one, the orange bike looked wrecked.
i wonder why he chickened out?
as for being narked, we avoided this by diving twin sets & side slungs (no kidding...training excercise)
also found a stash of shotgun shells within the rocks.
colin,
easier access would be good, although looking at the road to the quarry i doubt there will be any more access...
well, not unless we organised to make a new access ;)
"Defiantly different! and I've been told different is good," how true.
diving here i found to be very surreal, it was like being in a cartoon,,or perhaps that was the strange gas i was using:confused:
Ding,
im not falling for that chubby bait...
im breaming with confidence that i made no miskate
it was definatly a perch i saw in that place:D
p.s.

We were at Powmill Quarry today and a man with a shotgun said that the site would be redeveloped within the next 2 years. He owned the place and as such was liable for any injuries we would get. He certainly does "not encourage any diving".

It was bad enough the last time that I dived there to look up from 8m & see a boxer (dog) hanging over the edge watching our bubbles. Definitely wouldn't like to make out the outline of a shotgun being brandished! :o

Apologies, I did not want my reply to make the owner look unfriendly. I gather he was out hunting some (non-diving!) animals, and actually was very friendly in that he did let us dive. He said his father had asked other people who intended to dive before my group to leave his land. This was my first time I tried out the quarry; the vis was really good and it is a good training site but I'm not sure I would want to go back if we have to resort to 'right of way' acts.
Cheers, Max
Well, no shotguns today to be seen or heard.
My buddy Chris & I dived here this morning.
The access was terrible after the recent rainfall, the mud perhaps knee deep.
Luckily we had Chris's Freelander, although even that had problems.
The day started by gathering tree branches & making a 'raft' access for the struggling 4x4.
Attempt number 20+ soon saw us motoring up the hill only to be blinded by the welcome winter sunshine.
We kitted up, I splashed first into the 7 degrees water & I can tell you it felt exactly 7 degrees.
The viz being fantastic as ever persuaded me prior to take along the video camera.
Some good shots including my first full penetration of a caravan, which is now sitting rather precariously on the rocky edge, it sways around like an MFI wardrobe when touched.
I will try to edit the video over the weekend & post you all a link to view it.
Watch this space!
Thanks for the info. Sounds as if the site is becoming a victim of its own success with access becoming more treacherous.
Looking forward to seeing your video. I took some myself of my buddy Gus carrying on during our first dive in there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-D0q889rjM

One thing to remember, it is right in shooting season at the moment (woke up to the sound of 20-bores this morning :) ) and he is quite entitled to be shooting on his land. I dive a lot on sites used for hunting, usually if you show the guns and gamies consideration then they tend to leave you alone. Keeping everyone happy is worth going elsewhere for a week or two. Running a shoot or even shooting privately is a massive health and safety responsibility so it is understandable that he wouldn't want people on his land without knowing where they are and what they are doing. You don't want people wandering around that you don't know about when you are shooting.
I dive a lot in shooting areas of France too, piss off a hunter and it isn't surprising to get a sudden, inexplicable increase in car crime!
Cheers,
Stuart
Just edited the Powmill Quarry video.
You can view it here: - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIt3k4PCLnE
I used a 50 watt HID video light, which appear to work well in the shallows & on the close ups but appear to fail miserably in deeper green water.
A green water filter is the next investment. I am learning all the time.
Keep a watchful eye open for Chris attempting to wreck both first stages while motoring into the back of a van.
The look on his face explains his thoughts.
Nice edit Stewart. I have posted a link from Scottish Divers to here, as one of the guy's could make some sort of contraption to use in diving from all the wreckage. Hope you don't mind.

I dived again today at Powmill Quarry for the 2nd week running.
took the video camera last week & shot this:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_BXq2lOpyU
today was more of a play around as my buddy has just purchased a better 4x4 than his freelander of last week.
we met 4 divers from Cupar S.A.C. a BSAC club.
very friendly they were, they discovered the site via CA, they had print details from the directory which they used to locate & dive the site.
so well done everyone who has contributed to the directory, it works well.
they also happily acted as my props for the day.
the real star, as always when the camera is rolling, is my buddy Chris.
he always seem to manage to upstage everyone...

Yeah it was a few of the folk from my club were there. I couldnt make it as I was on the lash the night before for my birthday. Feeling rough as guts the next day too, couldnt face getting up in the cold to go diving. I passed on the info to them regarding this site. Have to say that the info on this site for dive sites is invaluble. Well done to everyone who has contributed.

Yup, good info.
I had a look at Powmill yesterday (19/12/06) and access is definately 4x4 only, preferably with AT/Mud tyres! Oh and if you have tall antenna(s) then look out for the overhanging trees... :o
I do wonder how long before the only access is blocked off though :( it looks rather like it was in the past until some kind soul moved a boulder or two for us! A real shame as it looks like a cracking shakeout/training site.
Anyone fancy an early/mid morning splat tomorrow??
i think the boulders are there to stop any further cars entering into a watery grave.
if the quarry was easily accessed by joy-riders, then there would be no water left to dive in.
hail to the boulders....
well at least as long as i have a 4x4 :)
Airmonster, craigdiver and I all managed to get our 2WD cars up there on separate occasions a few months ago. However, it looks as if the site has become a victim of its own success. Heavy use + heavy rain have made things tricky by the looks of it.
It's actually not too bad walking up from the main road: although it does certainly get you warmed up. What would it be like to walk up the slope at the moment? Is there deep mud up there or is it only down near the road?
Only real mud is down by the road. The track up to the site has however been quite badly washed away by the stream running down it. I daresay I could get a car up there... but probably not one I liked! ;)
i walked up & down at the weekend, or to be more accurate i ran up n down as i was filming.
muddy holes here & there, dont think i missed any with 2 soggy feet by the end of it.
any car could be driven up & down, the only hurdle is the access from the main road.
there is such a deep trough now only a 4x4 could pass it.
any 2 wheel drive would without a doubt get 'stuck in the mud'.
a few months ago when the ground was firm it was passable with 2 wheel drives, i think by spring time it may return to its former glory access but for now im afraid its a hike up with your kit.
perhaps pack a shovel on the next trip.:(

Myself and mrgreen created the existing entry through the bushes (avoiding boulders) with an old Ford Fiesta which had to be laid to rest (RIP:() a few months later due to sump, suspension, exhaust, bodywork & engine damage most attributed to that visit to Powmill. For the record - we did not cause any damage, destroy any trees or move any boulders - just some insane driving!
