Sorry if this query has been posted before.

Would anyone like to recommend a book for identifying marine life in our waters please?

I'd want an idiot-proof one with nice colour piccies of the species. ;)

If you can get hold of the American Audubon Society's Northern Fish book then it is really good. There's a lot of stuff in it that you'll never see but the northwest Atlantic isn't much different to the north-east. There are colour pics of just about everything mentioned in the book and they have a really good ID system where you can narrow down what you saw by it's profile, number of fins, etc. They do a separate "creatures" book too i.e. anything that isn't a fish.

I've got Naylors book and also British Sea Fishes by Dipper. I'm sure whichever book you get will have some 'holes'/poor shots/ fish not mentioned. Not seen the book that Stuart recommended. I'll look out for that one.

I bought in New England years ago when I used to live there. I've never seen them for sale in this country. They do a whole range for different groups of wildlife.

This might be it, but there isn't much of a description so it's hard to tell:

The Marine Conservation Society - Guide to Inshore Marine Life, David Erwin & Bernard Picton, pub.IMMEL, ISBN 0 907151 34 5 is a good starter. 120pp and a photo of everything in it. The photos are all diver taken so they actually look real !

Has anyone got any opinions on this one?

Marine Fish and Invertebrates of Northern Europe: Frank Emil Moen, Erling Svensen (http://www.marinbi.com/eng/index.htm)

I've read some good reviews of it.

O.K. This is not a book but it's a really good online guide to just about everything you'll ever come across.

Fantastic resource: thanks, Eddie! :)
