They have a clubhouse on a spit of land in Rhu. I'm not sure how close this is to a train station,

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the advice, I possibly should have been a bit more descriptive.

I was thining of nightschool over a load of evenings, you can normally do it for under a £100 or can down in England. I know marinas / RYA schools can do it, however in my BSAC tradition of keeping the cost of training down to a minimum I was hoping to do it over the winter.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Gareth. :)

You'll need to do it over a number of evenings, the course is about 40hours long with 2 exams! Did my post re:RYA website not help? All available locations for delivering RYA courses will be listed there and you just need to enter your location and what course you would like to take. Can I ask why you want the Dayskipper Cert? If its to do the RYA Advanced Powerboat course then there is another route you can take. PM me if you wish, I'm the principal of FPTC and RYA Advanced Powerboat Instructor.

Oh, and if you can and are eligible, and the establishment you are taking your course with is listed with them (ILA), you can pay for up to £200 of your course fees through an ILA grant. Check out ILA on google.

Thanks guys,

Hickdive's suggestion Hickdive's suggestion Hickdive's suggestion!

Hickdives suggestion looks the right one its about £200, which is expensive, but I guess the college should provide a really good course. They did it for about £125 last year in stafford over 8 months of Wednesday evenings but the evening clashed with my dive club night.

Checked out ILA grants and you have to earn less then 18K yeek !

Did my post re:RYA website not help?

Sorry, I could not get the search engine to work, I will have a go on my home pc tonight.

I'm after the dayskipper as it covers navigation, rules of the road, chartowork etc.... and should be quite interesting to do. I like the idea of a sailing boat in the medium term and the skills work well with a BSAC Avanced Instructor qualification which I keep meaning to finish off which is quite heavy on chartwork and navigation. Certainly the new Advanced Diver has a lot of navigation sections and as I supposed to be able to teach most of it, I thought it can't hurt.

Cheers for the advice. Looks like its the GCNS.

I'm doing my BSAC Advanced diver stuff just now and ended up giving the lectures on the Navigation and Chartwork to my fellow students on the course in my capacity as a BSAC Seamanship Skills Centre Owner/Instructor. ;)

Oh, I should point out that its NOT the college's fault that the course prices went up. Its the fact that the Government removed the automatic subsidies from "non-essential" learning courses. The RYA campaigned for months about this, citing that people may no longer be able to afford these (in our minds) essential further education courses and we would have less qualified and learned people putting their lives in danger at sea.

Port Edger sailing school at South Queensferry run the course over a couple of weekends at a reasonable price.
