View Full Version : Research into underwater life...
Folks
there has been a new pipeline laid at work, (not the one the blew up, but a different one going in the opposite dirrection and on the other end of the island), anyway it's only been in a month or so.
So, I was thinking to monitor it for life over the next few months/years for aquiring of life stuffs.
Is there any set standard or procedure for monitoring this kinda thing?
It's not deep, only in 2 to 6 m water, well within my skin diving photog range.
any help would be most greatfull.
hiya,
I would have thought that carrying out a line transect of some kind would probably be the best bet. If you get yourself a long enough tape measure and run it out along the length of the pipe (but *PLEASE* don't tangle yourself up in it and drown yourself :)). Then, record the life present at every interval (e.g. stop every 1m or so (depending how long the pipe is) and record the species present). Taking a camera can help you ID things later.
If you're looking to compare the life on this pipe over time, it would also be beneficial to mark your survey points (ie where you record the species), so you can examine the same points each time you go. this should allow you to track the community on the pipe and how it changes over time.
You should also record the depth of each survey point, the date, time of day and number each survey point so that you ID them when you go back.
Hope this is some help, and enjoy! PM me or post here if you want smoe more info.

I wouldn't be allowed to set a tape measure, however I may be allow to tie rope around the pipe.
I was thinking in the region of marked areas, with photographs (dated etc)
thanks for the help
why dont you put a cheeky mark on a spool piece so you can identify it, take digital pics on a weekly basis from the same setpoint, edit them on video software, merge the frames with over laps and play the movie so we can see the progress over a given time period, such as a year.
you could then entertain us all with the finished process.

thats a really good idea, thanks
aye,
the idea in a tape measure is just so you can ensure your returning to the same area each time, but any kind of marker will do (as long as it'll last). Good luck, and looking fwd to seeing your results
