Mermaid and I dived capernwray this week and there were only a few divers there on both days. But after talking to some of the guys that work there, there are usually 200 divers on a saturday and sunday. So armed with this information I'm going to cancel the weekend quarry dive. And as promised here are a few pictures of Capernwray.

First a picture of the quarry

Great photos as always, Ding ;)

You did better than me in getting one of a sturgeon (I wasn't quick enough in getting the camera out of my pocket)!

Looks as if the weather and viz were quite kind to you. Did you go up to Kirkby Lonsdale to drift under Devil's Bridge in the River Lune?

Is that Mermaid doing a bit of wreck penetration above? That's against the site rules, you know! ;) As I was told when I came out & told my wife that I'd gone inside the "Podsnap" (I hadn't bothered to read the rules before getting in).

I could be mistaken, but I think that the one above is actually "Lord Lucan" ;)

This is Shergar I believe:

We thought of doing the Devil's Bridge but we went to a local bar/restuarant and ..... well u can guess. As for the horse, on the map it says lord lucan but its obviously a horse so I called it shergar.

All those bearings between the 'features' - looks like the path of a Tequila fuelled pinball. Can you see from one feature to another to navigate? Where do you fit 200 divers into this space at the weekends? Only allow in the very slim? Stacked three deep? Or take tickets and wait in line just like at the cheese counter at Tescos?

Trainees in at 6 meters openwater divers to 18 and the advanced on the bottom kicking up the silt. Photographers round the plastic models and stolen cars. and the remaining 50 waiting in a que to get air and burgers...:D

I'm attaching a picture of Ding coming out of the hold of the Podsnap, so you can tell that we didn't read the rules either.

Great photies, mermaid :)

Did you enjoy your trip down to darkest Lancashire? We'll be down that way next weekend, but no chance for diving I'm afraid :(

Enjoyed it very much. The weather was very good for the time of year and the water was a tropical 18c which helped make the diving more interesting. B&B was good and the locals were very friendly and helpful. :)

The food was good the beer was cheep they measured the Tequila with a port measure. Some of the locals were originally from Paisley, its a small world. On Tues we had to share the quarry with ten or so divers but wed we had the place to ourselves in the morning, but for some reason the viz was best on Tues

I would recomend diving here during the week but not at the weekend. One day 2-3 dives would do.

I forgot to post this picture of a trout and some perch or rudd?

I did like taking pictures of the trout here

i think your 'perch' are actually Rudd.
perch have a smaller fin behind the dorsal fin.

cracking pic of the trout

Ding

I changed it to perch or rudd but they never mentioned rudd at the dive centre. Just brown and rainbow trout, perch and sturgon.

stew
18-09-06, 23:23
i think rudd are only native too england/wales area & perhaps the south of scotland.
i fished for corse fish as a boy, pike & perch being the free fishing option of that era.
incidentally, im rubbish at identifying sea water fish.
although closley related; i do know the difference between a beagle & an akka ;)

charlie

I thought that they were roach. ;)

They mention them in the Capernwray blurb. Roach and rudd are very similar methinks. :)

almost identicle apart from the anal fin i believe, one is squarer than the other i think?

Here's a photo that I took of them in Capernwray:
http://staff.stir.ac.uk/charles.mcgurk/diving/yorks0806/roach.jpg

And some info about the species:

I'm still not sure, although the colour of the pectoral fins may suggest roach?

Ding

Hi charlie the fins look like neither a roach or a rudd and the colour is like rudd but I would not bet on it either way now. Do u have a picture of a perch.

Experts think the rudd and the roach have bred making a new species called a rudoach only seen when breathing pure o2 at depth.

What is this fish who knows?

I was a bit perplexed by this post until I realised that you probably meant that the 2 species had bred!

Unless you think that they've been fed genetically modified bread leading to such a mutation!

Just to completely digress (even further!), when on holiday we fed fish banana and bread to get them very close.

Has anybody tried this method here to attract fish?

On saying that It's good during the week on a sunny day. After the diving an apree dive looking over the quarry. Marmaid and I were chatting to two girls who were testing there kit for a trip to scapa. And when they went in we had the map and traced the route they took. Plate of chips, a beer in the sun, wish the weather was like that just now......:D

Mermaid's just one letter away from being your barmaid there, Ding. ;) Is that a Freudian slip?

I also quite liked Caperwray from the mid-week visit that we had. Not so sure I'd be as keen if it was the only diving available to me and I had to go at weekends :( Makes me appreciate how lucky we are with accessible free dive sites up here. All the better with all the dive site guides that you guys have put together :)
