Loudy and Shog,
The beast we saw today at Ardcastle was a sea mouse.
Aphrodita Aculeata.
Can grow up to 20 cms.
If someone can tell me how to post pics, I'll add it to this thread.(Insert image seems to want an Internet address.)
That was a cool wee thing :)
i see quite a number of sea-mice when im working but they look a little different from the one you saw - Aphrodita Aculeata.
here is a pic on the ones i generally have to fend off.

If you degenerates can just get out of the gutter for 5 minutes, perhaps we can get back on thread? :p
I've registered and posted the pic in photobucket so, hopefully this link wil take you there?

It's not the best photo in the world but you can clearly see the, almost metallic colours in the hairs. These looked better under torchlight. The on camera flash has made the whole pic flat.

I've added another couple of photos from Sunday's dive.
The first is a small anemone, just 30 - 40 mm dia but I can't find it in any of my books. Anyone out there know what it is?

The second is a common whelk. I liked the black patterns on it's white body.

They are good pics Yogi. Who would think a common whelk could look so interesting. The colour is good. One of these days I might get a camera:)

Not sure whether to be embarrassed by my "set up" or cocky that you think it takes sharp pics, so I'll err on the side of cocky.:D
It's a relatively cheap, Minolta Dimage digital camera in an underwater housing and the pics above were all taken using the in-built flash. The whole thing cost me under £300.00, 5 years ago.
I keep promising myself a better camera with a white balance mode and a strobe or two. This is pants if you are more than a few inches away from your subject, hence the pics of wee beasties.
The pics have been slightly enhanced using Paint Shop Pro to improve the contrast & brightness levels but otherwise untouched.
As I keep telling Mrs Yogi, it's not what I've got, it's how I use it!!:p:rolleyes:
Oh dear. I fear the thread may be about to go downhill once more?:o

I can see that in both of my books, "Photographic Guide to the Sea & Shore Life of Britain & North West Europe" by Ray Gibson, Benedict Hextall and Alex Rogers, and "Great British Marine Animals" by Paul Naylor.
However, the photos in both books show a brown "mouth" with clear or white tentacles. It was the blood red of this specimen which first attracted me to it. It was only in about 6 or 7 metres so colours were still reasonable. From my memory, I would say the photo has captured the actual colours quite well. Can this possibly be affected by its diet?
Anyone care to recommend any other books?

Both the above are quite good. The Photographic Guide probably the best of the pair. You'll probably need to add to your £10 though.
