Evening dive last night with Ding at GDRE. Fairly straightforward entry and exit. Viz was less than 1m at surface but 3/4m below 5m - just like Charlie McG and cheeky-diver found at The Caves on the same evening. Swam straight down a steep silty shingle slope. Occasional boulders and 3m face at 13m. Several fantastic big fireworks anemones - at least a foot across. Usual small sealoch life: sealoch anemones, plumrose anemones, squatties, flaties, and poor cod. Saw a short spined sea scorpion at base of wall. It's deep - got to 49m and slope still was carrying on. The topography of the slope is the same throughout the dive. Turned round and started back. Return only involved a couple of short Pyle stops as recommended by Ding's VR3. My Vyper did not give any mandatory deco stops until the 3 mins at 3 to 6m. Depth at LAT here is 57m on 1:10 000 chart of Upper Loch Long.

We need a new name for this site. what about a census, get lots of Ideas and pole the conger readers? alex has given a good description for those of u who have not dived this site.
I thought it was already called GDRE
or are you think about a 5 wrecks type name
call it something like punto car wreck
then everyone will be looking for car wreck thats not there
- got to 49m and slope still was carrying on.
alex
bit of a deepy then?
is this between the caves & the A'frames?
or am i way off the mark?
We need a new name for this site
how about...'ALEX WENT DEEP IN GLEN DOUGLAS'

How's about 'Shark point' ... presumably there are no sharks and indeed no point.. so going by the rest of the dive site names it makes perfect sense!!!!

Ding, is just taking the p*ss here about the name - he was laughing about that 'spoiler' when we were diving the Caves tonight. The site is well known as Glen Douglas Road End and that is the way it will stay. Stewart - I'll post the site details to Gord shortly. The divesite is opposite the Glen Douglas road where it joins the A814 south of the Caves.
alex
WouldI take the p*ss not me!!!! anyway here is some pictures from 2nite

Gord have you got the divesite description for GDRE yet? Sent last night
alex
yep. will do tonight post-work.
Good wee divesite for the divers that have a need for depth. Has lovley firework anemoneys and parking for up to 5 cars easy entry and exit. :)
This site deserves a bit more exploring and mabe do a map?.

Ding,
Next time we'll see if there are any 'like a small version of Caves' features to the right. I agree that it merits further investigation as entry/exit is OK
Can't dive this week as flying to Campbeltown Wed, then Edinburgh Thurs, then on call W/E

I'm going quarry diving down south this week, so we could probably get another two divers and make an underwater map next week, wed or thur?
Two divers go north and two south come out and make a map in the village Inn. Could take some U/W pictures as well
did this site today for the first time.
i used the guide from c.a. dive sites.
found this to be very useful on locating the site. one update, the 'glen douglas' sign post has been flattened into the ground by a car i assume, made it a little more difficult to spot, lying in the long grass.
plan B.. i used the pics from the guide to identify the marks on the road & the odd tree.
did the job but then we found the sign post!!
& so we dived..
access over the crash barrier is tricky with a twinset coupled with short legs:eek:
the dive itself was better than i thought, the place is littered with life.
conger eel, annenomies galore & i saw the largest lobster of my life here.
it was covered in barnacles, i first thought it was dead, but it was just that old i guess.
the claws must have been around 7+ inches across. my buddy put his hand next to the claws (not that close, but close enough) & the claws were way bigger than his hand/fist.
will take a brave guy to bag this one!

Stewart, which way did you go on entering the water? Straight out or to left or right? Straight out there is pretty much just a shingle slope with a very short wall. If you went left or right did you see any other interesting UW topographical features?
alex
We need to do an U/W map of this dive.....
started straight out & down, but as you say, scree slope.
turned right, lots of short walls stepping downward.
to the left, very similar but only saw this at shallower depth <20 meters.
I dived GDRE today with East Kilbride SSAC and we had 3 YBODs and 4 bubblers. The viz was about 5-6m, this site has reefs and cliff faces. There are things to see at all depths, right down to short of 70m, as I have been told, I have been to 40 odd with Alex Maclennan who has written the dive description for here. Check it out...

Mermaid had a dip here today as well...

As you can see it was dark and the dive was done at the end of the torch beam. The picture below shows a modified YBOD. With this modification you can fit any size of cylinders you want or up to 4 cylinders different sizes

The BDO of EKSAC was checking out his kit before doing a trimix CCR course with John Thornton the skipper / diver of the Karen at Scapa Flow

PS Has anybody seen a brown Plumose anemone? This is the first time I have seen one.
A chocolate plumose, could u guys check your books and see if its in there somewhere

Ding,
Looks like you had a good day  . Stewart Russell also seems impressed with the site. Once you get your head round a divesite drawing, fire it off to me and I'll update the divesite description.
