Isn't there a "What's your favourite seafood recipe" thread somewhere? :D
Some of my buddies over here dive with spearguns... I don't like that
I saw a lovely big cod beside some kelp recently, so after shooting it, I gave it a pat to encourage it to vamoosh before the hunters spotted it (my shooting was digital only )

Now then, young man, THAT fish is most easily identifiable as a COD, (Gadus morhua) .In this case you don't need to tell us what length it appeared to be as it is losing its "fingerprints" from its flanks! Had they been more visible, then it would have been a Codling, i.e. a juvenile cod, usually less than 2lbs in weight, after this size they lose their "fingerprints" (the darkish vertical bands along the flanks). Still, no matter what age they are, they all taste REALLY good in batter...
Possibly a Norwegian Topknot, but I cant see the thumb print dark patch typical of this species.

yup, quite a few guys do that over here. But it's a way of life, and they only ever catch what they will eat, and there are very very serious fines if you are caught over your bag limit.
There was a couple of dudes last year, and the Ranger caught them with over 100 abelones more than they should have. He took their catch, their boat and trailer, their fishing gear and still fined them $7500.
great photo, olddog
thanks for the info too
