Whale watching off the rig today with a pod of at least 50 Orcas coming along side. We could see 10 breaching at once at times. Amazing!

One of the few perks of working on an oilrig I suppose. Just a shame I didn't have a camera.

I work as the Medic on the Ocean Nomad, currently about 30 miles East of Peterhead. It's a drilling rig so we'll move on to a different location once this hole is finished. Quite nice where we are at the moment though with a nice short flight back to Aberdeen.

You lucky thing - now get a camera so you can get some snaps for us. Fifty is a large pod.

remember your JSA, hot work permit, gas detector, barriers, appropriate gloves, safety glasses, hard hat, storm jacket, safety boots, ear protection and always remember to inhibit the IR/UV flame detectors........

you know the score :o

Hi there,
as I work with a lot of people interested in marine mammals around scotland, I would really be intersted in any kind of info. Which direction did they travel, males femals and so on. Did anyone made a picture? We could use pictures for id.
Cheers,
Lars

No picures at all I'm afraid, as T2T pointed out, it's not quite as simple as just pulling out your camera and snapping away. If I wanted to take pictures, I'd need a permit with several different peoples signatures on it before even taking it outside. Something to do with it not being "intrisically safe". Load of rubbish when the welder is there grinding away but thems the rules.

As for direction, I had to ask the control room what way we were pointed (WNW apparently), so I'd say the Orcas were headed NNE. Not a clue about the sex, even if I was in touching distance I wouldn't know the difference.

Thanks for that. The sex of adults is quite obvious. Males have larger fins....
