A colleague of mine says this is as good as PS for most tasks ...

Is this true? Anyone have experience of it?

I've heard it's good. But never used it

I've used both PS and GIMP and would recommend both. GIMP has the major advantage of the price, it's free under a GNU licence (as far as I recall), other than that you'll find it operates along the same lines as PS though it might take a while to get used to it's interface and nuances.

i have used it with Linux OS. Its ok once you learn all the commands. quite power full.
You could also try Paint Net its free as well

Yeah, Paint Shop Pro for ever!

Can it be called nicked if it was given? As far as I know Bob might have bought an extra licence (honest, M'lord!).
