View Full Version : CA trip on DiveSafari Pegasus out of Dunbar Spring 2008
Righto, I have set the wheels in motion for a trip on Pegasus again with DiveSafari in the spring. Suggested dates so far are either 27th April or 4th May (both Sunday's). The last couple of trips were enjoyed by all and I enjoyed organising them too so if you are up for it stick your name down provisionally and once I have dates confirmed we can get down to some commitment and deposits.
Plan would be two dives either Bass Rock then River Garry (if weather and conditions permit) or out to the May Isles. Price for the diving I suspect would be the same as before, £30 per head or for £5 each extra we could take the boat out to the May Isles.
Stick yer hand in the air and preference for date.

Peterm and myself will be Buddy pairing, can I ask that you sort yourselves out with Buddy pairs, Garry usually insists on each buddy pair have a delayed SMB (and using it!!).
Please note, during the trip I am not responsible for anyone except myself, I am simply the trip organisor. Each of you will be responsible for your own safety and any other issues. I am not a divemaster or any other qualification responsible for anything like this. I am also not responsible for the weather, I have not harnessed my godlike powers just yet. Although Garry (skipper) is pretty good at these kind of things. Weather and tides will also have an impact on what we can dive

When cheque is sent for deposit you have confirmed your place, in doing so you are responsible to pay for it in full. Should you opt out for any reason then you may sell the place on.
If you cant sell it, then pay up or 'Brutus Baseballbat' will help.
if its cancelled due to weather then the cheque is offered back or moved to a rescheduled trip.
Any other questions PM me or raise on here.
nice to see the return of 'Brutus'....;)
im in Egypt on those dates :p ... if they change, let me know.
No can do. I get back from Portugal on the 30th April and will probably still be recovering on the 4th :o
Don't you read the emails I send you Chris - I booked you down today for April 25th - I know you're planning more diving this year, but 2 trips on one weekend? However, if it's that weekend I can do both and just be unpopular - sorry remain unpopular :(
GG and I can do the 27th April, but not 4 May, as I'm diving already that weekend.
I can do both, so put my name down
do you want a deposit? paypal?
Dont need deposits yet, I will wait on Garry getting back to me and confirming dates. Will be good to see you again Andy and hear about Oz!

Am I too late to put my name down , either date would be OK for me.
:o
No problem Johnny, I spoke with DiveSafari today and we are ready to go on this trip. I would really like 10 names as its a minimum of £300 which if we have ten its £30 per head, however dont go thinking if we get 12 two go free, its still £360, their rules not mine!!
So one more name please guys and I will be looking for deposits next week Cheques by post preferred.
So come on at least one more name, the trips were great last year!!

guess I'll need to find a buddy....anyone want to be my friend for the day?
Firth of Forth, thats where the water is 21C? right?
Andy,
You and Johnny can probably Buddy up as I think most others are buddy pairs. Dan and Mogwai have buddied before too so it would be sensible to put them together again.
Peter and myself obviously, GG & Claire and Gedan & Shmeeg are couples.
If you are still in OZ, I can vouch for your deposit if you want.
Everyone else I will send a PM out regarding deposits.
Cheers

thanks for all the PM's about the deposits, I will be sending a cheque of to confirm our place over the weekend.

Dont forget if anyone has any particular preference please let me know, obviously we will be weather dependant and for an extra £5 a head Gary will take us out to the May Isles!!
Righto, deposits in for the following, so I have sent a cheque of to DiveSafari today. As the small print said earlier, now the deposit is paid it is your responisibility to pay for the trip whether you make it or not (you can sell your space on if need be). As you can see I have been trusting with a few of you so I am out of pocket at the moment and dont want to be let down. Excellent thanks for all the quick responses with cheques etc. I sent off the deposit last week, not had a chance to bank the cheques yet, in case any of you are wondering why the money isnt out your bank account. I spoke to Gary and obviously we are weather dependant, but my discussions on sites revolved around Bass Rock and the River Garry. If anyone has any particular preference please let that preference be known or if you are happy with these choices, please raise your hand.
Have a confirmed 11th from one of my buddies ( PM to Chris ) and will try and drum up another 1 this evening at the pool training so as to keep the numbers even.

Ok so we have 11 divers and I am £30 short on deposits so 3 of you need to bring the full amount.
Does anyone have any specific preferences with regard to dive sites, I am going to be speaking to Gary either today or tomorrow to confirm "ropes off" time and book any additional cylinders anyone needs. To confirm we will be out on the boat for the two dives, having lunch on the boat, therefore you will need to bring enough air to last two dives and some food for yourself and me (only joking about me!!). Gary can usually arrange to bring on spare cylinders for a fee of course, so let me know if you need any. Not planning any dives below 30ish metres unless you really want to, but it would have to be a site where multi level is available for those that dont, such as Bass Rock.
Bass rock and May Isles prefered.
River Gary etc Ok by me though.
I have Georges £10 deposit , so that is 'safe'
JohnnyB.
Having never dived the River Gary I fancy giving it a whirl, unless everyone else thinks it's cr*p - not done many wrecks in the Forth. I would also prefer Bass Rock to May Isles, 'cause they are further away, but open to the May Isles as I've only been once and another site might be better. I guess weather conditions may come into play too.
I dont think it would Bass and May, it would be either or and then two dives at the May Isles. Not sure if that is what you meant or whether you were basically saying that either of them would do.
It is a long ride out to the May isles with Bass Rock and River Garry fairly close means a shorter day. Having dived for the River Garry and missed it last year, it would be nice to actually dive it.
PS Still one space left for any last minute takers??
I meant River Gary and then Bass Rock, but would go River Gary and then the May Isles if that's the consensus. Wouldn't really want 2 dives at Bass Rock or May Isles missing the wreck unless conditions dictate.
However, although my numbers do not confirm this, I am a bit of a dive w***e and would dive a muddy puddle (oh well, have anyway) so will not complain (you wish) in any case!

If its possible to keep me shallow and no-one objects, I'd like to tag along?
If anyone is unhappy about me on the trip with my PFO, PM Chris to let him know and he can PM me to say no without needing to name anyone. I promise to understand and not be offended.
Righto, spoken with Gary and Slack water is 1300hrs ish. This would mean if we want to the River Garry we would need to be down and out of the Harbour pretty sharpish to give us enough time to do one dive then have a surface interval before hitting the "square profile" River Garry.
Having heard a bit more from Gary on what the River Garry is like, it does not resemble a ship anymore and is pretty flat on the sea bed with some interesting life, but its a flat/square profile at 25m.
I am happy for this to be Plan A and if we all get there early enough and get the first dive sorted quickly then we should be OK, but we should have alternative plans.
Plan B could be 2 dives at Bass Rock or 1 dive Bass Rock one Craigleith.
With Plan C out the May Isles.
Please let me know your thoughts this week and we can agree a ropes off time.
I could create a poll if you want.
(I understand that Plan A would mean Yogi is pretty restricted however)
Both the May Isles and Bass Rock do offer shallower dives, but River Gary is down as 26-28 on the dive guide here.
http://www.congeralley.com/sites/rivergarry.htm
hope you guys get the weather, its been a big east wind for the last few weeks.
been working the east coast regulay and the viz has been pants!
further off shore you get the better it will be.
Which might tend to suggest the May Isles

If I can get at least one good dive, I'll be happy. If Plan A is for 2 dives on River Garry, where I cannot go, then count me out. I'm happy to keep shallow, but not hanging on a shot line.
However, make your plans for the majority and we can see where that leaves me later.
Ok lets have a response to the following:
Option A - Early start, swift get ready and first dive at Bass Rock with a short ride to River Garry for Slack at 1300hrs (In my opinion quite a rushed day)
Option B - A couple of local dives at Bass Rock and/or Craigleith
Option C - A day out to the Isles of May/May isles (can never remember the correct term) Doing two nice leisurely dives/plenty of potential for a wreck with a surface interval watching seals and puffins.
Or
Option D - Dont really mind either way Chris.
Okay, Plan A - River Gary seems a bit of a faff and now have conflicting reports as to how good it is anyway - maybe not that fussed
Plan B would be okay, but have done it lots - second dive this year, maybe that's a good thing.
Plan C - May Isles was nothing special the only time I've been there, but I'm told there's better. I like puffins and seals (no grease jokes please!). Might be good.
My answer is Plan C, but I will do anything (again no seal jokes)!
LOOK REALLY I don't have any firm opinions - please tell me where we are going or have it as a giant surprise, but stop asking me for my pointless opinions. :D

Wearing a parachute for the way down and dive kit to finish it off - sounds like a laugh!
Ok not asking you two your opinion then although looks like two possible C's so far.
Not too worried but Plan C sounds good. Plan A sounds a bit rushed and we have to get across from Glasgow so really early start doesn't sound great.
Ok fellow divers, Shmeeg and Gedan have had to pull out of Sunday's dive so it looks like there will be two spare places. As the conditions say
"When cheque is sent for deposit you have confirmed your place, in doing so you are responsible to pay for it in full. Should you opt out for any reason then you may sell the place on.
If you cant sell it, then pay up or 'Brutus Baseballbat' will help."
If anyone wants these spaces then I suggest you contact Shmeeg to negotiate your place and drop me a PM to let me know. I have asked Shmeeg to pay the remainder of the two places (something I dont really want to do but I cant afford to out of pocket), so it would be nice if these two places could be filled to save Shmeeg paying for a trip they cant go on.
Thanks
Chris
Ok guys, spoke with Brian and the plan is at Dunbar Harbour for 0930 for a ropes off at 10am, nice leisurely trip out to the Isle of May and I have suggested dives at Mars wreck and rocks (loads of seals to play with) followed by lunch and then probably the Wreck of the Albany depending on conditions.

It was a swatch - I can't see a model number, but it sems to be called a Fun Scuba. The battery is user replaceable. The bar code says SUGN100 but whether that is a swatch code or the duty free, I'm not sure. I think I bought it at Palma duty free. Last time through Edinburgh airport in March they had them there at the watch/jewellry place just past security.
Just want to add my thanks to Chris for organising this and also to say it was great to meet you guys today.

1st site was Mars Rocks, a scenic dive on the North West top of the Isle. A nice site with seals in attendance and a large lumpsucker reported. (All I saw was Urchins!!!)
Second dive was on top of the alleged, but never seen by anyone on the boat, including the skipper, wreck of the Anlabay, a steamer which ran aground in 1873 witha cargo of coal. I had dived this site several times in the past and only seen the occasional girder so was amazed to drop down and discover a large wreck, starting with the prop shaft in 14 metres and following the wreckage up to 10 metres with the layout clearly discernable. Speaking to Brian, our skipper, we reckoned the wreck must have been covered in sand which has shifted, exposing the ribs of the hull and the entire port side.
Loads of photographs werre taken with the new toy and these will be posted on Photobucket soon so watch for the link.

Speaking to Brian, our skipper, we reckoned the wreck must have been covered in sand which has shifted, exposing the ribs of the hull and the entire port side.
Anlaby is a very popular wreck. She is very close to the shore on a sloping seabed so the skipper should be able to give a dive briefing (and drop you off ) to hit it 100% of the time.
Shifting sands??
TheMacallan, that is exactly what I thought and was a bit dissappointed by the reaction, particularly when I saw the photos of the wreck!!
Also forgot to mention that we had a pod of porpoises on the way out to the Isle of May too :)

I last dived this site about 3 years ago and remember this beam clearly standing proud out of the sand, but there was nothing below it at that time.

It is quite conceivable that the sands could shift during severe storms to cover/uncover a wreck at such shallow depths.
The rest of my pics are in Photobucket, please feel free to browse if you've got nowt better to do with your life!:o

Chris, Brian asked me to send Garry the pics but I don't have his e-mail address. Can you forward the link to him for me please?
Really good day's diving, thanks for organising it Chris. I haven't looked over the video I took yet but was gutted when the battery died just as we came across the wreck on the second dive.
I would have liked a little more time on the wreck to explore it but when I checked my buddy was still there, he had launched his SMB and was ascending on it - I think he was trying to tell me he was cold. :D
Had a good days diving, but a bit miffed at my evening. After 2 and a half hours editing I was ready to create the video file at about midnight. At the back of 2am I gave up! I was running this on my daughters laptop, which has a later version fo Movie Maker. Going to have to redo it on my pc now, which will probably take less time than trying to fix the problem on the other one!

Some nice pictures there, I have dropped Gary an email with the link and suggested that he might want to get the position on his GPS for future as it would have been nice to have been dropped onto it.
I have a few good pics but not had a chance to do anything with them except look at them, so when I get a chance I will upload them.
Looking forward to the two videos :)
Hope you like the video - I hope I didn't forget anyone - one name wrong already, sorry Paula! - sorry to Claire who wasn't on any of the video , just like when you record your own as I know - anyway, hope it's okay.

Ahh bit ticky this!
You are very close to the cliffs!
It all depends which way the tide is running .
The wreck lies on a rocky sloping sea bed so no matter how good your GPS
is you are not going to see it on the sounder.
Oceonics (UK) Ltd could not not find it in 1995!
We drop our divers North of the wreck in 10m in the West landing Bay
and let them swim South along the 12m contour to come across the
girders and finally the stern section in 15m.
Works every time. Great place to see octopus too so the swim is well worth the effort.
(we reverse the drop off if the tide is running the other way)

Hi,
Photos of the day can be found here (http://www.craigcampbell.co.uk) (couldn't resist the video of the diver lift!)

Great video Peter. And thanks to the large grey seal that made a brief appearance at depth (not sure if he reads congeralley or not:rolleyes:)
Cheers
Craig
Hi Craig, wish I had the lift on a decent length clip too, but hey! I always find it's a balance between taking videos or pictures and remembering to enjoy the dive and the day out - so no video of the lift and going the other way I didn't see the pospoises as I was getting my camera out to video them - doh!

Woohoo, the plan worked. I hate being on video so it suits me!
The lift was fantastic. Not only was getting back on the boat easy but so was getting off - I went down on it too. Meant I didn't have to stride entry then fin back to the boat to get the video camera.

I'm glad of that, as I did feel a bit bad when making up the video to find that you were the only person I had no shots of, even if some of the others weren't exactly centre camera.
I have now added photos from the trip, might post a couple of the good ones in the photography section
