Before anyone says anything, you need to know that i have a very rules-based temperament. Some would say a personality disorder and borderline OCD. So i wrote a note to multimap to secure their permission for the images in our dive guides. They sent back a nice reply saying that it is fine to use links to their site, but not to use pasted images.
So what I propose to do is to create a little link-logo which we can put into the dive guides and embed the html links that way, to avoid the big long reams of hypertext.

In future, if you are submitting a dive guide, please just include the link to the appropriate multimap, rather than cut and paste images from their website.

I know it's a pain in the ass, but i just want to keep Conger Alley legit.

Here is a copy of their email:

Hello Gordon,
Thank you for your email and apologies for the delay in replying. You are more than welcome to link to our website. You may also link to any of the maps as described in the 'Free Links & Maps (http://www.multimap.com/static/freemaps.htm)' section of the site. This service enables you to provide a link from your website to a specific map within our website using a postcode or longitude/latitude coordinates. To generate your link, please click here (http://www.multimap.com/map/home.cgi?client=public&rt=urlgen).
The map images however must always reside on our server and cannot be copied. This is because the maps on our website are provided by external suppliers, and we are legally obliged to comply with their copyright laws.

We hope you will find this information useful.

Kind regards,

Gord,

OK only problem is that Ding - and now I - annotate the maps so that it is explicit where to park or where divesite is.

What about charts?

What about charts?

Alex

dunno. Where'd they come from?
I'd be more concerned about multimap in general as they're a major web presence who might send me a bill one day ...
If the chart is just a scan, then I'm not so concerned ... but I spose you never know.
It's ok for now.

I too contacted Multimap regarding the use of a map for the Glasgow South web site, they were happy as long as a link to Multimap is displayed. You can also use ordanance survey maps from here;
http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/getamap/
However you are only allowed to download 10 maps and have "by kind permission etc etc" Which reminds me, Gordon, can you add "Images by kind permission of Ordanance survey maps" to the two sites I posted.

Cheers

Billy

Problem is, only 10 maps would leave us over the limit.

I need to think about this one. I think it's clear that we'll just have to include links but not images.

So I would advise everyone who is doing guides to not expend time annotating maps etc as we will have to replace these images with links.

Cheers.

hmmm.. copying and pasting any image i would assume is very likely to be a breach of copywrite, whether they are maps or charts.

if however you were to 'trace' the maps and put a hand drawn image on the site then it should cause no problems.

or find someone who does online maps that doesn't mind them deing used as long they are credited for them.

I think the best thing is to just link to the maps.

It's only for directions to get to teh site, and a bit of narrative plus a link should be sufficient.
