Everytime I log on there seems to be several guests viewing the site - where in Cyberspace do they come from?..... and what brings them here? Photos, rants about shared ascents, Glesga banter?? Ding's Crap Jokes :D (I see your online just now). Who knows

What about a Guestbook in Jimmy's?

I think they are people who have not joined. They can look at the site but not post or reply to anything. Am i getting the hang of this technology thing?
One of the girls in my work had a wee look at my posts. so I think I am right.

Hi DG - yes guests are unregistered viewers, as the site is open to anyone who has internet access to view - but who are they? - my guess is odds & sods surfing net at random, or divers from who knows where.

I think sometimes it looks like me and Eddie are guests cos I use his computer and it logs us out...so if we just have a read and don't post anything I don't always log in...mystery solved?!?

hah..princess..it still amuses me!! from now on you shall be known as 'DLP' !!

anyway...you are all correct... the guests are either unregistered people, or registered users who have not bothered to log on.

You're not far off the mark Stewart. I get to see reports from the ISP on visitor stats, and about half of them are spiders and bots (ooh, i feel like a real techie:rolleyes: ). And about half of those are probably porno spiders. Some of them try to post links in the directory (which is why i moderate entries to the directory and it takes a day or two for legitimate ones to come through). If you like, i can allow the autoporn to get posted, or alternatively just forward the links to a select mailing list;) .

Overall, i would say about half the "guests" are real people: either users who aren't logged in or else visitors just surfing the site.

Cheers.

we had the same trouble with our www.cusac.org forum so the guest book was torn up & fed to the fish.
spiders & bots ar like vermin on the internet.
almost as bad as 'our' asian call center workers who call & try to sell me something every teatime.
gone are the days when you want something you buy it.
nowadays they call you to tell you that you need it!!
rant rant rant!

It's about 50/50 on any website on the Net. Half of all visitors are bots. The most active is the Googlebot, which spiders Conger Alley about 800 times a month. Freaky, eh!

As I am not a technology buff, please tell me what spiders and bots are, apart from the obvious.

Automatic software that visits websites around the net and either records what's there or else tries to do something, like leave an entry in Stewart's teh guest book ;)

bot is short for robot, i think ...

spiders are so-called because they crawl around the "web". They are also known as "crawlers" for the same reason.

If you're interested, i've tweaked the system to distinguish in "Who's Online" between spiders and real people. So from now on, if you click on "Who's online" the list will show guests and spiders. Guests are now definitely real people.
