A bit of background info may help.

Questions:

Is the card new? If it is did you buy it of FleaBay. Loads of crappo counterfeits out there.

Have you tried another card or any onboard memory on the camera to take a pick?

How are you formatting the card, in the camera or on a computer? Some cameras have their own card configuration and don’t like computer formatting.

Test the card with a card reader they are cheap. Store some data from your computer on it and see if it works or kick starts the card into action. Clear the data when done and re format. Your camera def wont like a word program etc.

Have you ever removed the card from the camera or the computer before the data transfer is complete? "They just canna take it Scotty shes gonna blow":D. But re formatting normaly sorts the card but not the data.

XD card come in two types H and M. Check your camera supports the one you have.

In conclusion XD cards are just about bullet proof physically. I have seen tests on them when they are boiled crushed etc and its dam hard to kill them. Just check the contacts are clean. If it still fails tek it back and get another card. They are cheap to buy and you will need loads.

P.S. Do the first dive using your new housing without the camera in, If the housing floods at depth then no tears.

yep will be doing first dive with just the housing, as per the instructions!! doing as i'm told for a change!! i took the card out another olympus camera and put it into the card reader on my computer. thats when it went wrong, the computer reads it but the cameras dont. got another card on the way anyway!!

most camera sealing systems/o'rings work on compression.
so basically if it's going to flood, it will flood in shallow water.
depth increases the pressure on the seal so less likely to leak.

i generally try them in the bath/sink or pool first but its always worth a run at depth just for your minds satisfaction.

So we know the card functions as you took it from another camera. Its odds on that the camera is ok, so your problem is that your new camera is seeing old data on the card that it can not read.

This data may not just be old photo data. A formatted card will also contain a file directory. The camera uses this file to locate sections of data relevant to each picture. If you disrupt the read or write process by, for instance taking the card out of the camera during data transfer you leave partially stored files. The camera software is relatively simple in its expectations of the configuration of this data and hoys a wobbla if it sees disorder. It's also going to hick and fart if the new camera uses a FAT file directory and the old one another format.

OK enough of the long winded Sh**e. To get that card to work you gotta clear all the data on the card. Try doing it all three ways, ie using the old camera, by computer and by formatting using the new camera.

Oh by the way some Olympus XD cards have a sector on the card that is partitioned and stores a specific panoramic function. You won't be able to get shot of that section even if you wanted plus it's not part of your problem anyway.

Its probably not worth farting around for ten quids worth of 1 gig card, but ten quid buys a lotta cheap cider for you ;);)Uni Scum;);)

10 quid does not buy enough cheap cider!! especially after 2 weeks of exams!! exams finished on thursday, leaving diving till 2moro to enure suitable soberness!! jus got a new card today, may try and fix the other one at some point but didnt see the point in faffing about when a quick trip into town was easier!!
i've tried the housing out in the water tank in our storage cage and it was fine (about 1m deep) so will take it to depth tomorrow anyway on the first dive.
if anyones about at loch long 2moro we'll be the scummy students in santa hats!!
