hi folks,
there were 9 from the club in that night,I think they had a book on to see how long I would last!!,only kiddin, mah wee hert was beating fit tae burst at the start!!.The two guys from the club I was in with took things easy in 5 mtr stages, eventually down to 15 mtrs approx, the viz was rubbish to start with, because of me kicking up the crap, but I surprised myself with how well my buoyancy was after a wee while, even managed a 3 min deco at 5 mtrs :p no polaris/feet first, not really much to see, funnily enough there was a slight current to swim against on the way back out,the only new addition to the seascape, was a couple of lavvy pans, one complete with seat!!.quite pleased with myself.thanks for all your support, just an idea,it would be nice to have "congeralley" insignia,ie hats/t shirts so the likes of me could know who's who, just a thought.

cheers,
Fraser.

Well done Fraser. I knew you could do it. I did my first seven dives holding hands (limpet like grip). So good on you. D.G.

Well done fraser. There are plenty shallow sites for you to get back your confidence in the water. Give the 29 steps just up from A frames a go. The anemone city is beautiful and again you don't have to go deeper than 15m

hi alex,
Last time I was up there, there was a lot of fishing line drifting about, then again that was a couple of years ago!!presumably things have changed.

How about those training sites on teh clyde just north of west kilbride? They're very clear, accessible and bottom out around 12m. Plus plenty of life.

Hi Fraser, been there several times in past three/four months. I've not seen or been tangled in any line. From jetty, follow the line of old bottles to the Aquatron steel platform at 10m. From there go to 12m/14m and swim left towards A frames at the same contour. Come to remains of an old dolphin. From there and more shallow and further on (10 or 20m maybe) is a lovely anemone garden on red rocks. Easy 10min swim back to the stone jetty entry site. you can do your 3min at 5 m 'stop' whilst swimming back. alex

Hi Fraze!

The site i was thinking of is called Portencross. Here's a multimap:
http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=220000.750346934&Y=650000.388111103&width=700&height=400&gride=220387.750346934&gridn=648299.388111103&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=freegaz&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&keepicon=true&zm=0&scale=100000&multimap.x=213&multimap.y=235

Haven't been there for a while so no photos or anything. But I will do a site guide soon. Essentially there is a little castle, a wee car park and a mini beach between rocky outcrops. Go in off the beach and explore the rocks down to the max depth (about 10m). It's ideal for trainees. There is also a galleon out there, apparently, and people have been known to find the odd dubloon.

Cheers!

Yes, It's a good site but needs reasonably light winds especially from the SW. Don't be phased if you come across some gravestones, there are no graves just an old wreck which was carrying stone.

How did u get on with red rocks as I remember its just for training small life and not to scenic no depth?

Red rocks is a shallow scenic dive north of Largs on the north Ayrshire coast. Stop in the first parking space by the sea 1 mile north of Largs on A78. Step over the barrier and down over red sandstone slabs into a basin which leads into the sea through a 6 foot cut. From there, barnacle encrusted rocks lead to kelp and weed encrusted rocks, kelp and weed encrusted shingle and finally sand with long kelp strands. You can fin slowly for 15 mins straight out and still only be in 8m. Plenty to see in the weed. Loads of crabs, blue and orange starfish, common urchins, lots of little fish, a big pipefish and an eel. All in all, an easy evening dive. Only problem is navigating as the site is so shallow and featureless. I believe that sometimes compasses are unreliable there ? underwater degaussing station for subs close by. Anyway it is easy to pop up onto the surface get your bearings and swim back to the exit point.

Hi Ding, Just posted above (which was on YD). You're right about small life, no depth and a bu**er to nav because it's so featureless. Against that its an easy entry and if you like rummaging in seaweed - as Alan did after an eel - then its engrossing. It is a reasonable shallow training dive or an easy night dive for the winter (cannot miss exit as cars are continually on A78)
