View Full Version : Images, Youtube and Avatars
Hi everyone.
Someone I know through work came to me very upset last week because he had just received a bill from a high-profile photo agency for £1,700 for a picture he had posted up on his website without realising that it ultimately belonged to them.
I have spent the past few days looking at my own websites and have found a few very dodgy commercial images posted up on my golf website. I haven't really looked into the issues on Conger Alley yet.
I've had some discussions with the online vbulletin community, and there is a growing sense that forum administrators / domain owners may be increasingly at risk from this sort of thing. Some of the big agencies are employing web crawlers like Picscout to look for their images on line, and are then getting heavy with the billing. Avatars may be a future problem in this regard.
I'm going to see a friendly IP lawyer about this tomorrow. In the meantime, I have closed the forum to guests (it's members only for now) and switched off avatars.
I would really appreciate it if you would have a think and a look around the forum for any images which are not members' own. I'll be wanting to delete those.
Thanks.

Photos I've posted have either been taken by one of our group or have been from a disc that I have bought from an individual (eg the Lanzarote and Mexico ones) with express verbal permission to post them on the site.

I dont think I have ever posted someone elses picture, unless it was for them! All the pics I post come from my photobucket account!
Does it not matter that the images are posted in to your forum, therefore the origin is not yours??

Same for me, I've only ever posted my own photos. Same goes for my avatar, it's a picture of me.
Cheers,
Stuart
This forum is probably perfectly ok. I do have a problem on the golf one though. We've had to delete loads of pro-looking photos of tiger woods etc - very concerning. I'm taking some advice today.
Should be able to sort out soonish. In the meantime, carry on :)
Like the others, I've just posted my own photos including avatar. Can't think of many "stolen" photos being posted on the forum, but yes, the avatar issue is more pressing.

Same as me.
(Although I did notice on another diving forum someone has used one of my own photos from a dive site guide I made and used it in their own for that forum :( Im not annoyed about it but it would have been nice to get a mention....)

I think Charlie is probably right - Simpsons, Family Guy and other recognisable cartoon characters.

Well, I can assure you that my 'Simpsons' avatar was created by me, using my photograph, of myself, on the official Simpsonize Me website and broke no copyright laws.

You must have far to much time on your hands.

Not any more:(
Back at work and its coming in thick and fast, mainly thick.
Law Society conference in the SECC on Thursday, much dullness with the risk of being accosted by irate solicitors, busy working on my disguise.

Good god no! Carrying kit for Mr Preston and his ARTL chums then sitting at the back listening with increasing horror.
Same as me.

Hope that was not me:eek:

Sitting at the back snoozing would be a better option - I imagine there will be some solicitors in there doing that, collecting their 6 hours of free CPD!
Hope that was not me:eek:
No, dont think so, but shame on you if you did! ;) :D

To the best of my recollection all the photos/images I have posted here have been my own (and if they're hosted on flickr they provide a link to the page as per flickr's requirements). Photo for my avatar is from my own collection (i.e. it's me).
I'll be changing the licence on my images to Creative Commons Attribution Share-A-Like Non-Commercial (or whatever it is) at some point, as such reposting on a forum would be allowable as long as it is duly attributed to myself.
OK - I've switched the avatars back on, but please make sure that you are entitled to publish whatever image you are using. Please change it if you've been using a cartoon character from disney/simpsons/south park/ etc.
Preferably just using something you made/took yourself.
Thanks for your help with this.
Damn , I'm going to have to remove my image of the worlds most handsome man!
