View Full Version : hodges close trip
Okay as suggested, here's the new thread,so who wants to go it looks like we'll be heading down the weekend of the 17th/18th of november,a few guy's from Atlantic divers have expressed an interest too.So who wants to do a freshwater/altitude/cavern (not the cave system) dive, boring to some i know.Plan is drive down the sat morning which takes around 2 1/2 hours a couple of dives then hit the town in windimere :) spend the night and head home sunday.
Well you know I'm in :D and you need to add the other Active Divers who said there up for it as well.

B&B is a pain when you're on the lash though.

I'm up for camping... as long as the walk to the nearest brothel... I mean pub is not more than two miles... three is allowable if there is a muchie stop on route. B&B, hotel.. back of car is fine otherwise. ;)

No to a fecking Hostel either. Hotel or BnB only and as i said no fecking dump.
We need to get the fnger out and get a hotel booked soon, there's little chance of us all getting in the same place so the quicker we sort out numbers the better.
So is nobody going now ???????????????
Aye. I'm still in.
Can't say I know exactly where it is to look for a hotel though....

God he doesn't like to hang around does he? I'll most probably just come up for the Saturday and head home after the dive as Scott farting all night doesn't really sound that appealling. :D Should be a good one though.
I'm in.
And I snore all night and fart in the morning
So what is the dive plan anyway. Seeing as I'll be on air and getting the cider in
Loudy, looking at your blog you say the entrance to the tunnel system is at 23m. I've also read that the bottom is about 30m?
2nd dive in the sump is 8.5m. Is this the max?
If so my 7's will do me.
Probably 2 - 3 dives, I'll be taking my Twin 12's and using N36. Want to be down there nice and early, get diving, then off to the Hotel, shave, shower, ****e and into the town for some Grub and Beers.
Okay, so down to 5 for the hotel ????
Probably 2 - 3 dives, I'll be taking my Twin 12's

yeah the sumps only 8.5M,depth of the quarry used to be 30M but because of rockfalls etc it's around 27M.
Still no response fae the hotel  . Might have to slum it in the Hostel then :D
Emailed this place just in case the hotel is full. Much cheaper and as long as I'm drunk i could put up with no room service :D :D

I've been talked into climbing another rain soaked hill on the Sunday so will definately just be going up for the Saturday. Let me know when and where etc. Looks like my significant other might tag along also (to stop you guys leading me astray)

I've looked at the entrance to the mine before and you won't get me in there.

The only thing that's going to fall off is my KNOB if my repair on the inflation valve has not sorted the leak.
Come out on Thursday and test it ;)
The repair not your gentleman
The KNOB by the way is the KNOB on my Inflation Valve.
Regthing - Did you phone the Hostel to confirm our booking, cause I've had an email from them saying they are now full that weekend. Did you get an email from them to confirm they had booked our space for 5 ?

Not long now :D
I'll need to make sure I don't get huckled for OT on my first week (http://www.bowleather.co.uk/sti/BridgeOfWeir/BOW_Home.asp) ;)
I use their leather for the Hilux Custom Leather Jobs that Transcal do for me. Well Done mate, when do you start ?
They wanted me to start tomorrow! But I'm going in Monday.
It's just a temp maintenance role. Money wouldn't let you retire early but it will stop me using up all my redundy until I get something better. It's just 25 mins up the road as well :D

Sorry Saturday blame Vodka Wednesday for Friday post on Wednesday
What time do you chaps want to leave on Saturday Morning ? And who's going in what car ? I'm taking my Hilux (New one if it get's here on time, due on Wednesday) or current one, which is now a big advert on wheels.
I'd like to leave nice and early, around 6am so we get down there nice and early just incase it's busy or the weather is crap.

Yeah 6 ish sounds about right. The Scotland game is on so you guys will want the diving over and to be tucked up nice and warm in a boozer before it starts. I'll be heading back on Saturday so I'll take my own car down. We could meet up at somewhere like Happendon Services between 6.30 and 7 if you'd like.
Where's Happendon Services ?

On the A74 South of Glasgow

If your coming over from the East by some other route we could meet further South or maybe even at Windermere.
Naw that service station sounds fine with me, just got to make sure the rest get up in time.

Getting a bit frosty at the moment!!!

-6 in the Lakes last night. And the freshwater round here is getting feckin' cold, 6degC at the weekend.
6 Degs i can live with that, not to cold for a dive :D :D
Capernwray might be a safer option if this cold keeps up. I don't fancy being Guillotined by sheered off quarry wall
Let's see what the weather is like on Friday then we can make a informed choice then.
Saturdays Forecast - High of 8 Degs Low of 2 degs and Partly Cloudy so should be okay.

You'll be alright, it'll take a lot of freeze thaw cycles this early on. That said, Capernwray is probably a better dive as it probably takes longer to get to the water at Hodge than it does to swim round it. But either way, the water will be cold wherever you go.
There are some good streams for canyoning descents round Hodge as well.
I'm happy to dive either capernwray or hodges,as long as we get wet then a few bevvies after :D

We might. Depends on the hang over to be honest :o
OK. Capernwray would be cool (literally) for Sunday diving I would have thought. Viz should be great (especially at the Wessex helicopter at the far side that few trainees will be anywhere near). :o
Shame you couldn't make the saturday Charlie but pm us your mobile no incase we dive the sunday,as Scott say's need to see how the hangovers are :o

You guys are either brave or mad to go Hodge Close!!!!
Have any of you been?????
I've been with about 10 divers and NEVER, I say NEVER again....
Its not like a "proper dive site".... you pay the farmer at the top of the road £5 (ish) to park your car on his land then walk through a tunnel for 150m knee high in water thats as muddy as hell and its OK if you're 3foot tall, otherwise you are bent over double with full kit, sweating your arse off to then get to the end of the tunnel where you can stand up but you have to climb down the scaffolding ladder, yes I said scaffolding ladder to then scarmble down rocks for approx 4 metres and literally stumble over more rocks hopefully before breaking your necks (remember this is with full kit) and then go in.... maximum depth 26m if your lucky!!!
It was soooo boring when I went that we had a competition to see who could get the deepest but being a responsible diver I won't tell you the story about taking off my computer tying to my reel and a rock and then "throwing it under rocks at the bottom in the hope I got the deepest!!! I wouldn't really do a thing like that!!!
Anyway, as a Yorkshire lass, I can tell you guys you (in my opinion) are wasting a trip to Hodge Close. Its a f**king killer to get in and out, don't forget the climb out too! No p;hone signal at water's edge either in case of emergencies. I would never go again and I see myself as a tuff girlie diver!!
Capernwray (OK its rather stade too, but much, much more to see than Hodge Close unless you like rusty old vans and rocks!) has great facilities, safe, food on site and shop etc and it was TWELVE DEGREES this Sunday (11th).
Just my opinion anyway..... hope you guys have a great time whatever your doing but keep safe if you go to Hodge Close and don't enter the caves (you should see all the cut lines just inside the entrance - that should put you off!)
Enjoy your weekend!
Yeah i've been and had a fab time, did you do the sump dive? as for the entry it's no that bad, have you ever been to powmill?? :D
Capers is great but get there early as the car park fills up. I think its 25 ish for the day but that does give you a voucher for a free days diving monday to friday.
Food is pretty good (for the more hungry of you) and your allowed in, in wet kit unlike some other inland sites ive visited this year
Cant believe ive just written an inland site is good, must be the implant kicking in
£10 for the day plus £7.50 if it's yer first time there.
Remember your log book too or they won't let you dive :(

I don't care where we dive this weekend, either Hodges or Capernwray but we need to make our minds up before Saturday Morning.

Got my 54 can's of Strong Bow, you chaps got your carry out sorted yet ? :D
Well 3 for Lindsay, One in a sauce, 5 down my neck and one frozen and burst in my chest freezer
The Wednesday banter :D
I'm on the Special ;) (only the 2nd can at the moment)
Aye, now 43 cans left. Going for a world record for the length of this thread !!! Keep it going :D :D . Not my normal Wednesday or week as it happens, used some of my nector point tonight to purchase PGR4, New FF Albus and Stereophonics new Album, I had 22000 point (£22,000 pounds of fuel used in 2 years !!!!) still got 6200 left so need to spend £1500 in fuel to get C.O.D 4 using my nector points or i could be kind to M.N and spend £37 of my own money :D
Has anybody got a Mac Pro and use OSX Tiger or above? If so can i borrow your disks to update mine

New FF Albus
You're slurring your typing. Is that the new Foo Fighters album? Been on it for the last couple of weeks, wasn't keen on it at first but love it now.
What's the Stereophonics new one like?
still waiting on it, but will burn you a copy and post it to you F.O.C if you want

Looks like I won't be going either :( Instead I now get to go to Campbeltown and rebuild a feked server that needs to be up for Monday prior to my arranged visit on Tuesday. Still the overtime will come in handy for the 'buy me a RIB and something to tow it with by Summer' fund. Sorry lads, have a good one and try and keep Shog out of trouble.

Does the Solly the Mad Indian still run the curry house on the sea front? Best night's entertainment in C'Town :) That and the social club up the back of the cinema!

Looks like you'll be alright with the weather, it's been feckin cold the last few days, about -4 one night, but it's starting to cloud over.
I guess that you guys will be getting well seshed on Sat night so won't be likely to dive on Sunday. Therefore I don't think that I can be bothered taking my kit down to Yorkshire for the weekend on the off-chance.
Have a good one, guys!
18 pages, 177 posts for 3 divers on 1 trip to an inland dive site
Yeah and what's wrong with that ? Correct NOTHING and EVERYTHING, there should have been more people willing to come and try diving something other than the sea. Where in the sea can you dive a Wessex ???
Good point Shog, I see it has changed from Hodges to Capernwray then!
Aye but were still diving all year and every weekend and during the week so we rack up 170 dives plus. The more you dive and the more diverse the dive sites the better the experiance. Diffrent inviroments make for a better diver (Spelling however will never improveeee)
Good point Shog, I see it has changed from Hodges to Capernwray then!
What's the problem here Chris?? there's far too much bitching on the site lately and no enough diving,so what if we had a long thread about going diving, that's why we joined this site in the first place not to tell crap jokes and slag people off
whoa there loudy, there aint no slagging or bitching going on, you are way too sensitive!! I was merely remarking, maybe the smiley indicated something else.
I thought this forum was fun and having dived with quite a few on here, thought that jokey comments could be made, but obviously not. I will now refer only to diving on the website Oh lord and master of the crabbitness!
Hope you guys have a good dive or 3 at a fantastic inland site I have yet to dive..Please again accept my humblest of apologies for upsetting you and now posting 4 times on this thread without partaking in the diving!

I am interested in a dive at hodge close but would need to be on a sunday :o Still hope to get a dive at powmill with loudy the water should be nice and warm:eek:

I thought womem were meant to be the bitchy ones. I didn't interpret the comments as 'bitchy' I took it to mean just a lot of chat i.e.(number of pages and threads) to get to the end result. Not bitchy at all imho
Chill guys. I like reading your stuff but be happy. I will send you all some love to cheer you up. D.G.:) :)
as Sandie says, group hugs, kissess and chocolate all round.
:D
Diving was good but the Night Out afterwards was AMAZING, whit a laugh, watch the game, cried, cheered, cried again, then decided that we never had a chance anyway so got hammered, had a chinkie, got even more hammered, hit the digs at ????am.
Brilliant Weekend
I hear were you're coming from DG and Andy,
I've enjoyed reading this thread,
Shog yer a riot,Scott yer mental
and Loudy,he's the daddy.
I just cant wait to read their dive reports/blogs.:p
I'll let the others post about the diving as they did more diving, while i practiced my other skills :D
Hi guy's glad all went well , shame about the game though! really wish I was there with you ! next time I will Be ! Don't see the problem with posting about inland dive sites or how many posts there are either ! It's all about diving and that must be good, despite any comments otherwise ! Good on you guy's ! ;)

Yep, DIR-Explorers is often referred to as Quarry-Explorers on a few websites :D
Excellent weekend capernwray yesterday and hodges close today with few beers in between :D :D,will write a report in a bit.
Well that was a weekend and a half!
We met at Shogs house on the Friday night, had a few beers then had an early night (early being early the next day!) After sleeping in  we finally got on our way about half seven. We got to Capernwray about quarter to ten (not bad going).
Paid or £17.50 each (£10 + £7.50 because it was our first time!). We were expecting it to be pretty quiet but we where wrong, I've never seen so many divers in one place since the Red Sea.
http://www.dive-site.co.uk/mapinfo.htm
The first dive was out to the African Queen then the minesweeper (Podsnap), Shog had a nose bleed so the dive was cut short. The 2nd dive Loudy and I headed out to the first helicopter, this isn't very big so we just had a look around. The "cave" below it looked a bit rusty so we decided not to go in. We then headed for diving bell. Loudy had a shot on the handglider and I played with the legless action man and ferrari :D. Then we turned round to find we had been snuck up on by a shed load of folk on Megladons. We then headed off for the Wessex helicopter. This was fun, it's huge and there is plenty of space inside for a rummage. Next stop was the Candida II (AKA Sea Beaver 8HP) a wee poke about and swim through. We started heading back after this passing an old car then the Dreamer. We had a shot on Shergar as well :D. Just in front of the slip we had a face to face encounter with the Carperwray trout. Very friendly fish, and HUGE, we realised later that you can buy food to feed them in the shop, hence the friendlyness. All in all a good 61 min dive.
We considered another dive but we would have been cuting it fine to see the game :D
Then the drinking started  :D ;)
We went to Hodges Close today, Really nice site and not as difficult to get into as it's made out. A lot of care need to be taken on the ladders! Shog and me weren't feeling up to the dive mind you so Loudy had a quick solo dive in the main quarry and the sump.
But I'm now choking to go back and dive this :D
An excellent weekend in excellent company. Cheers guys
sounds like you guys had a fun weekend, cant wait to see the pics..;)
Shog and me weren't feeling up to the dive mind you
nothing get rid of a hangover better than jumping into cold water...

Sorry for being too sensitive Chris,i mean your jokey comments you made about this trip were hilarious  but then again fair enough if i only did 24 dives a year then i'd like most of them to be in the sea.
pm me if you want to have a chat,no point in airing dirty washing in public.
Capernwray was a surprise as it was really good, excellent vis and lots to see with the wessex being the highlight.Water temp was 11c.Hodge close was good too just a shame the boys weren't feeling up for a dive,i could see regthing was itching for a dive once we got there though.Water temp here was 8c and again vis was amazing as i could see the surface from 20M.
It was an amazing weekend cheers guys :D

You should do a trip to Dorothea at some point over the winter. Not as much artificial stuff in it as Capernwray but it does have some superb scenery underwater. It's got amazing walls and drop-offs, two big rock pinnacles that rise from about 50m up to near the surface, tunnels, lots of cars & vans (there was a 2.4 Merc diesel engine that I'd thought about lifting:rolleyes: ) and the odd fish. Vis is generally superb below the first few metres and depths from 15m to 100m. You could fit about 20 Hodge Close's into it and still have room for a Capernwray :D And it's also free entry, unlike Hodge or Capers. If you're lucky then you might see the little red helicopter or the big yellow one if you're really lucky.
It was about a 5hr drive from Glasgow though but it's a great weekend, lots of cheap places to stay in winter too.
I do fancy dorothea Stuart but i thought it was too deep for normal recreational diving.

Nah... there's probably more clubs and schools use it for training than anyone. About half of it is <40m (i.e. the bit where the cars and crane are) and on all the drop offs you can pick your depth just like any other wall.
There are plans to turn it into a Capernwray pay-dive type centre.
Here is a map:http://www.aquaworld.freeserve.co.uk/images/photos/dorothea.jpg
It's certainly a good test of buoyancy control!
Cheers,
Stuart
That looks pretty cool with lots of exploring to do,mad that there's a house at 48M :) and a tunnel system at 80M ,away to look it up.

There are a few other tunnels, there's one at 22m and another 57m, both swim throughs. There's another one right at the bottom which is blind and goes to 102m!
There are a lot of buildings in it as well, it was a working quarry up til they turned the pumps off. There are plenty of people in the village pubs that worked there. A few bits of machinery as well on the bottom at various depths. I like the drop off just out from the car park, completely vertical. If you get the right spot then you hit a plateau at 40m, if you don't then it's about 60m the next stop.
The pinnacles are great too, a bit like shore diving Bo Fascadale (without the fish).
There's a lot too rummage about on the surface as well, a lot of the old workings are still intact.
Cheers,
Stuart

what, your are puposely taking a thread to 1000 posts?

I think it is childish to keep this going.............
Better stop posting on the thread then?
Time to end this post. Thanks for all that have posted, but the idea of getting it to 1000 was childish. Let this be the last post and a thanks to all that did post and to the 2 others that came and got drunk in Engerland :D
